Dear Steve,
In your last email, you said you wanted to buy a pet. Why not get one from an animal shelter (收容所) The big advantage is that you can save the life of a homeless animal. You are able to offer the animal a good life. The money you paid to adopt your pet goes to the shelter. This means more animals can be saved and cared for.
Animal shelters are often run by volunteers, people that really care about animals. Some shelters even have programmes to pair adopters with pets. They help you find a pet that’ s right for your lifestyle and home. Meet Your Match is one of them.
Thanks to Meet Your Match, I got my pet Ruffie. Ruffie is a cute dog. She was saved from a big fire when she was six months old. I have had her for over a year. She gets along well with everyone in my family, including my father’s cat.
Other advantages are:
l Shelters get new animals every day, so there are always lots of choices.
l You can be sure the animal’ s health has been checked.
l Shelter animals cost less than animals from pet shops.
At least you should try a shelter first when you look for a pet. I’ m sure you will have a surprise.
Yours,
Arl

A few years ago, I planned a family trip to Disney World. During the trip, my outgoing (外向的) 6-year-old daughter was getting a lot of special attention in all the parks, while her 3-year-old brother was overlooked (忽略). He was a shy kid and seemed fine with it for the most part.
Since both of my kids at that time loved the movie Finding Nemo, we decided that we wouldn’t miss the show Turtle Talk With Crush. During this show, the green sea turtle ( 海龟) called Crush from Finding Nemo swam up close to have a talk with the visitors. My son really wanted to be chosen to talk with Crush, but he was too shy to put up his hand. My daughter wore bright red clothes and spoke in a loud voice, so Crush chose my daughter instead. As the show came to an end, we found my son crying softly on the floor. Crush asked me if he was OK. I explained that he was sad because his sister had been getting so much attention and this was the one thing he had really hoped to be chosen for. The performer ( 表演者) told us to wait for a few minutes.
Once the room had emptied, Crush came back onto the screen and spent a few minutes talking one-on-one with my son about what it was like to live in the sea, even giving him a little swimming lesson. I can’t tell you how thankful and surprised we were that the performer had gone out of his way to help a sad kid and make my son feel cared for by a character ( 角色) he liked. Richard Turere has always enjoyed making things using old things. For example, when he was quite young, he made fans for his parents’ house from car parts and things he found in the yard (院子).
Richard lives near the Nairobi National Park in Kenya. It is home to rhinos, giraffes, lions and many other animals that live in Kenya.
When he was nine, Richard began to look after his family’s cows and sheep. The big problem was the lions. “I didn’t like lions,” says Richard. “They used to come at night and feed on our cows when we were sleeping.”
Then one night, as he was walking around the cowshed ( 牛棚) with a flashlight ( 手电筒) in his hand, he noticed something. “That day the lions didn’t come.” Richard realised that lions are afraid of a moving light. So he had an idea. Using some used parts from a car and a motorcycle, Richard set up some flashing lights to make the lions think that people were walking around the cowshed. The lions didn’t come near. Soon other families were using his “lion lights”.
Richard’s lion lights cost just ten dollars to make. They have not only helped the farmers but also the lions. Many lions have been killed ( 杀死) by farmers trying to protect their animals. Now, across Kenya, Richard’s idea has been used by farmers to protect their animals.
Richard has been accepted into one of Kenya’s top schools. “One year ago, I was just a boy looking after my father’s cows. Now I want to be an engineer (工程师) or a pilot (飞行员).”

七、任务型阅读(本大题共5小题,每小题1分,共5分)
阅读下面短文,根据短文内容完成句子。
When you walk into a fast food restaurant, you can order chicken burgers, fish burgers, beef burgers and more. Now, businesses have noticed that people are caring more about the influence ( 影响) of animal production on the environment. So they’ve created plant-based burgers. These burgers have no meat and the “patties (碎肉饼)” are made from plants. But the man-made meat tastes and looks like real meat. Some fast food restaurants are already selling plant-based burgers along with traditional burgers.
Plant-based food makers say their burgers are healthier. They also say they are better for the planet than meat. One food maker, Impossible Foods, feels animal production is bad for the environment. They are trying to end the raising and killing of animals for food. According to Impossible Foods, its Impossible Burger requires ( 需要) 96% less land and 87% less water to produce. It also creates 89% fewer greenhouse gas emissions (温室气体排放物).
While many believe plant-based products are better for the planet, these products may not be better for people’s health. Impossible Foods says a plant-based burger has about 240 calories ( 卡路里) while a traditional beef burger has 290. But a high degree of processing ( 加工) is required to make plant-based burgers. It takes over 10 plants to produce the man-made meat. However, a traditional patty takes just one — beef. Real beef also has less fat and more protein ( 蛋白质) than same-sized servings of plant-based meat.
Nowadays people hope to eat simple and natural food. A plant-based burger requires too much processing. That goes against people’s wish. Which do you think is the better burger
71. People are paying more attention to the influence of animal production on _______________.
72. Some fast food restaurants have begun to offer _______________ burgers along with traditional burgers.
73. Impossible Foods says its Impossible Burger uses less _______________ and produces fewer greenhouse gas emissions.
