I come from a family that loves sports. My father is a PE teacher. My mother swims nearly every weekend. My brother is in his school basketball team, and I am the best hitter in my school volleyball team. All of us have benefited (受益) from sports. One of the most common ways for kids to take part in sports is to join a team at school.
Being in a team allows students to enjoy a healthier social (社交的) life. They often make more friends and can be some of the most popular kids at school. Take my brother for example. When he came to his new school, he knew nobody. Since he joined the basketball team, he has made friends with a lot of his teammates and has become popular at school.
Kids who join school teams sometimes get college scholarships (奖学金). One of our neighbours, Justin, played football in high school. His family did not have money to pay for his college. However, a college invited him to play in its team. The college paid for him to go to school. Joining a team turned out to be one of the best decisions he had ever made at school. Although not every school sportsperson gets a college scholarship, joining a school team makes it possible.
We cannot ask every student to join a school team, but it is clear that it’s an important part of school life. Everyone should try it if they have a chance to do it.

Marriage is celebrated around the world.
In many countries, it is customary for the bride (新娘) to wear a white dress. The tradition of wearing a special white dress for the wedding ceremony (结婚典礼) started around 150 years ago. Before that, most women didn’t have enough money to buy a dress that they would only wear once. Now many brides have their dress specially made.
In many countries, colours other than white are worn by the bride or used as part of the wedding ceremony. In certain Asian countries, red and orange are considered as symbols of pleasure and happiness. In China, wedding invitations are usually red and gold.
As part of many traditional wedding ceremonies, a bride wears a veil (面纱). At first, veils were worn as a sign of secrecy. They could only be taken away by the husband after the ceremony. Today, many brides still wear a veil, but only for decoration (装饰).
In many cultures, couples exchange (交换) rings during the wedding ceremony. The shape of the ring is a symbol of endless love. The wedding ring is usually worn on the ring finger of the left hand. The finger was chosen because it was once believed to be able to keep the wedding ring closer to the heart.
Flowers are important in most weddings. Roses are said to be the flowers of love, so they are usually used in wedding ceremonies. After the wedding ceremony, it is customary for the bride to throw her bouquet (花束) into a group of girls. It is said that the girl who catches the bouquet will be the next one to marry.
Today, couples can choose from many of the world’s traditional customs to create their own special wedding ceremony.
