Find Your Adventure at the Space and Aviation(航空) Center
If you're looking for a unique adventure, the Space and Aviation Center (SAC) is the place to be. The Center offers programs designed to challenge and inspire with hands-on tasks and lots of fun.
More than 750,000 have graduated from SAC, with many seeking employment in engineering, aviation, education, medicine and a wide variety of other professions. They come to camp, wanting to know what it is like to be an astronaut or a pilot, and they leave with real-world applications for what they're studying in the classroom.
For the trainees, the programs also offer a great way to earn merit badges At Space Camp, trainees can earn their Space Exploration badge as they build and fire model rockets, learn about space tasks and try simulated (模拟) flying to space with the crew from all over the world. The Aviation Challenge program gives trainees the chance to earn their Aviation badge. They learn the principles of flight and test their operating skills in the cockpit (驾驶舱) of a variety of flight simulators. Trainees also get a good start on their Wilderness Survival badge as they learn about water-and land-survival through designed tasks and their search and rescue of a "downed" pilot.
With all the programs, teamwork is key as trainees learn the importance of leadership and being part of a bigger task.
All this fun is available for ages 9 to 18. Families can enjoy the experience together, too, with Family Camp programs for families with children as young as 7.
Stay an hour or stay a week—there is something here for everyone!

A new study finds too much light at night can cut the number of seeds a plant produces. Researchers put up street lights in Swiss meadows, far from any real street. The setup mimicked (模拟) urban light pollution. In these now-light-polluted fields, flowers had 62 percent fewer night visitors—insect pollinators(传粉者)—than the flowers in dark meadows did.
Cabbage thistles are the most common flowers in these meadows. Fewer insect visitors at night could mean less pollen (花粉) pollinated from plant to plant (the first step in producing seeds). "For the thistles, daytime pollinator visits didn't make up for this loss at night," says Eva Knop, an ecologist at the University of Bern in Switzerland. Overall, night-lit plants produced one-eighth fewer seeds than plants that got full nights of darkness did.
"Light pollution might affect a whole network of plants and their pollinators," Knop and her colleagues now suggest. Indeed, night pollination is not just a lonely business for a few special plants. There are lots of links between production of pollen by night and that by day. Plants with a lot of night visits are often very busy by day, too. Light at night that decreases seed numbers could over time mean fewer new plants. And fewer plants could mean less food and shelter for daytime insects. Therefore, a lot of pollinators working day and night shifts could be affected, which is what Knop worries about.
The new study is the first to show how artificial light affects plants' ability to produce seeds. The test is also unusual because it considers all kinds of insect pollinators instead of focusing only on night-flying insects. The researchers paid special attention to the cabbage thistle, but they also mapped which kinds of insects visited other plants by day or night.
1. Why were street lights put up in the meadows
A. To copy light pollution. B. To promote urbanization.
C. To accelerate plant growth. D. To attract insect pollinators.
2. What can be inferred about cabbage thistles
A. They attract only night visitors. B. They grow slowly during the night.
C. They are the most common Swiss flowers. D. They rely on insects to help produce seeds.
3. Light pollution affects pollinators' _____.
A. sight B. numbers C. growth D. food and shelter
4. What is the main idea of the text
A. Plants attract more insects due to light pollution.
B. Night-flying insects matter more than daytime ones.
C. Light pollution may affect plants; seed numbers.
D. Researchers found ways to protect the insects.
C
You have probably read about robots replacing human labour as a new era of automation takes root in one industry after another. However, a new report suggests humans are not the only ones who might lose their jobs.
In New Zealand, farmers are using drones (无人机) to herd and monitor cows and sheep which take up the position that highly intelligent dogs have held for more than a century. The robots have not replaced the dogs entirely, Radio New Zealand reports, but they have appropriated (盗用) one of the animal's most powerful tools: barking. The DJI Mavic Enterprise, a $ 3,500 drone favored by farmers, has a feature that lets the machine record sounds and play them over a loudspeaker, giving the machine the ability to imitate its canine counterparts.
Corey Lambeth, a shepherd on a farm, told RNZ the machines are surprisingly effective. "That's the one thing I've noticed that when you're moving cows the old cows stand up to the dogs, but with the drones, they've never done that," he said, noting the drones move cows faster, with less stress, than the dogs do.
The drones come in handy for more than just herding cows and sheep. The robots allow farmers to monitor their land from afar, monitoring water and feed levels and checking on the animals' health without disturbing them. Jason Rentoul told RNZ that a two-hour herding job that used to require two people and two teams of dogs could be accomplished in 45 minutes by using a single drone. "On a hilly farm where a lot of stuff is done by farmers on foot, the drones really save a lot of man hours," he said.
For now, farmers say, there is still a need for herding dogs, primarily because they have a longer lifespan than drones, can work in bad weather and do not require an electric socket every few hours to recharge.
1. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 refer to
A. Farmers. B. Dogs. C. Sheep. D. Loudspeakers.
2. Which of the following statements is supported by the passage
A. Herding dogs will gradually lose their position on the farmland.
B. The drones are multifunctional and leave the animals undisturbed.
C. The drones can help monitor weather conditions with the current technology.
D. The market for the DJI Mavic Enterprise is pretty small because of its high price.
3. Why can't the drones replace the dogs entirely
A. The drones are much more expensive.
B. Cows are not used to seeing the drones.
C. The drones can't bark as loudly as the dogs do.
D. The drones, power is limited and they need charging.
4. What is the author's attitude towards the drones in the passage
A. Supportive. B. Objective. C. Critical. D. Doubtful.

When parents discover their children have lied to them for the first time, it can often come as a shock to find their children are capable of such a trick. But new research has suggested many parents may not even notice many of the lies their children tell them.
Psychologists have discovered that most parents are overconfident about their children's honesty and this may impair their ability to discover a lie. The findings may help to explain why some parents seem to be willing to let their children get away with almost anything even in the face of evidence. They say parents suffer from a "truth bias (偏见)" with their own youngsters, but when faced with lies from other people's children, they have less difficulty telling whether a statement is true or not.
Dr Angela Evans, a psychologist at Brock University in Canada, said, "The close relationship that parents share with their own children may lead to parents' failing to detect their children's lies. Parents' truth bias may result in parents' being less doubtful about their children, allowing the children to successfully cheat them." Most children are thought to start lying as early as two years old but start telling more believable lies at around the age of four years old. Learning how to lie is considered as a key part of cognitive (认知的) and social development in children. But many parents are shocked when their children start lying to them. In their study, Dr Evans and her colleagues filmed 108 children aged between 8 and 16 as they performed a test after being asked not to look at the answers. They were asked afterwards if they had looked, with 50 truthfully denying looking, 49 lying about looking and 9 admitting to looking.
Videos of those denying looking were then shown to 152 parents of children aged 8 to 16, 80 of whom had children who had taken part in the test. The researchers found that the parents were less able to spot lies told by their own children than by other people's children.
1. What does the underlined word "impair" in Paragraph 2 mean
A. Show. B. Develop. C. Damage. D. Recognize.
2. Why is it difficult for parents to find their children lying to them according to Paragraph 2
A. They aren't prepared for the lies. B. They pretend not to discover the lies.
C. Their children know how to lie to them. D. Their children are very good at hiding their lies.
3. What does Dr Evans find out about children's lying
A. What makes parents lose trust in their children.
B. What causes children to tell lies to their parents.
C. What affects children's relations with their parents.
D. What makes parents fail to detect their children's lies.
4. What can we know from Dr Evans' study
A. Parents tend to protect their own children.
B. Lying is a part of children's development.
C. Children aged 8 to 16 are likely to tell lies.
D. Parents can judge lies told by children of others more easily.

No Time
With a broad smile on her lips, 15-year-old Sirin rushed to her mom to show off her new painting. But mom raised her eyebrows with eyes wide open, and spoke in an impatient tone, "No time, baby. Right now I am busy with an important talk. Just wait for some time, OK "
Holding her oil painting, she frowned(皱眉), and then searched for her dad.
"Dad, see what I have done," Sirin announced aloud in a thrilling voice. Her dad turned around while adjusting his tie, grinned at her, and showed his thumbs up!
Immediately, blowing her two cheeks, Sirin replied angrily, "Dad, you haven't seen it yet."
He smiled at her saying, "No time, baby. I will see it later." He just patted her back lovingly, kissed her forehead, and rushed for his office.
She was not a kid to be pleased with simple gesture or smile. She stood there for a few seconds, and then stormed off to her own bedroom. Hot air was blowing from her nostrils(鼻孔); her face turned into apple red. She threw the painting on the table, slammed (把……砰地关上) the door and threw herself on her bed.
"Why is everybody so busy " She recalled thousands of incidents that hurt her in pre-school, middle school and even in high school too! She assumed at least her own family members would give some values to her thoughts, but they were no exception. Unconsciously, her eyes were filled with tears.
The knocking sound on the door put a sudden brake to her thought. Her mom was calling her for dinner. Sirin deliberately came late to join them. She kept silent and didn't look at anyone, scratching the table mat with her nail. Her mom was puzzled at the unusual behavior. Suddenly, the morning incident clicked in her mind. Softly, she asked, "Honey, did I do anything wrong "
Paragraph 1:
At this very moment, Sirin could no longer resist her anger. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Paragraph 2:
When back from school the next day, Sirin was surprised to see her beautifully-decorated paining on the wall. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

A
Researchers put up street lights in Swiss meadows, far from any real street. The setup mimicked(模拟) urban light pollution"可知,路灯竖立在草地上是为了模拟城市的光污染。故选A。
Fewer insect visitors at night could mean less pollen(花粉)pollinated from plant to plant(the first step in producing seeds)...this loss at night"可知,昆虫更少可能意味着植物之间的授粉减少(授粉是结籽的第一步),对这种蓟来说,白天授粉者的造访并不能弥补晚上的损失,由此推断,这种植物依靠昆虫来帮助结籽。故选D。
Light at night that decreases seed numbers could over time mean fewer new plants. And fewer plants could mean less food and shelter for daytime insects. Therefore, a lot of pollinators working day and night shifts could be affected"可知,夜间的光照减少了种子的数量,随着时间的推移,这意味着新植物的减少,而更少的植物则意味着白天活动的昆虫的食物和栖身之地减少,因此影响了很多白天和晚上轮班的传粉者,由此可知光污染影响传粉者的食物和栖身之地。故选D。
4.考查主旨大意。阅读全文尤其是第一段中的"A new study finds too much light at night can cut the number of seeds a plant produces"可知,文章介绍了一项新研究。
The robots have not replaced the dogs entirely, Radio New Zealand reports, but they have appropriated(盗用) one of the animal's most powerful tools: barking"可知,这种机器人已经盗用了狗的最有效的手段之一:吠叫。
Psychologists have discovered that most parents are overconfident about their children's honesty"可知,心理学家发现大多数父母对他们孩子的诚实过于自信。
故选A。
But make yourself do it anyway. Once you get in the exercise habit, it won't take long to notice a difference in your mood."
If depression has you noticing only the negative, make an effort to notice the good things in life."
Most of all, don't forget to be patient with yourself."

Last Sunday, unfortunately, my left foot got injured in the competition. Luckily, you just learned first aid. First, you dialed 120 immediately and performed first aid before the doctor came. Besides, you put my foot in a comfortable position. Then you rushed to a shop nearby and fetched bags of ice, and carefully applied the ice to the injury. Lastly, you covered the injury with a clean and dry bandage.
Now I have got well again. Thanks again for your help.
Best wishes to you.
Yours,
Li Hua

Paragraph 1:
At this very moment, Sirin could no longer resist her anger. "Why is everybody so busy " she roared, tears streaming down. She assumed that her mom and dad would feel proud of her great talent, would appreciate her painting but she was disgusted with everybody having "no time" for her, "I hate you She screamed, grabbed the painting on the table and tore it in half. Shocked, mom threw her arms around her tightly, announcing regretfully and firmly," Baby, I am so sorry! I promise this mistake will not be repeated."
Paragraph 2:
When back from school the next day, Sirin was surprised to see her beautifully-decorated painting on the wall. It was beautifully framed and just below the painting, it was written "We are so proud of you, our little angel!" On seeing it, she burst out crying. She ran to her mom and hugged her tightly as well, fully aware of her mom's love. Recalling her mom's stress from work and daily life, she was regretting her previous behavior. She ducked her head, apologizing, "Sorry, mom!" It dawned on them that though everything came and went, mutual understanding would stay forever in their family.
