The 1900 House
The Bowler family was one of more than 400 families who applied to 1900 House, a reality TV show which took a typical family back a hundred years to see how people lived in the days before the internet, computer games and even electricity.
The Bowler family spent three months in a London home without a telephone, computers, TV, or fast food. The Bowlers wore clothes from 1900, ate only food available in English at that time, and cooked their meals on a single stove. Paul Bowler still went to work every day in a then uniform. The children changed their clothes on the way to and from school and their classmates didn’t know about their unusual home life. Joyce stayed at home, cooking and cleaning like a typical housewife of the time, though everything took three times as long.
So does Joyce think that people’s lives were better in the old days
“I think people in the old days had just as many troubles and worries,” Joyce said. And I don’t think their life was better or worse, there were lots of things back then that I’m happy I don’t have to deal with nowadays, but on the other hand life was simpler.” “We had a lot more time with our family, and it was hard being nice to each other all the time,” eleven-year-old Hilary said.
So what did the Bowler family miss most about modern life while living in the 1900 house
Paul, 39: “telephone and a hot shower”
Joyce, 44: “a quick cup of tea from a kettle you could just turn on”
Hilary, 11: “rock CD”
Joseph, 9: “hamburger and computer games”

C.Women doing most of the housework. D.Kids learning better without computers
(25)What did Paul have to do for the show
A.Send the children to school. B.Stay home from work
C.Get dressed differently D.Cooked on a single stove.

A.More time with their parents B.Time-saving equipment in the kitchen.
C.Easy way to communicate with others D.Fast food and entertainment
(27)What can be inferred from this passage
A.The children’s school had no idea what was going on in the family.
B.The older way of life is more attractive to adults than to children.
C.The modern convenience save more time for family get-together.

It’s not easy being a teenager---nor is it easy being the parent of a teenager. You can make your child feel angry, hurt or misunderstood by what you say without realizing it yourself. It is important to give your child the space he needs to grow while gently letting him know that you’ll still be there for him when he needs you.
Expect a lot from your child, just not everything. Except for health and safety problems, such as drug use or careless driving, consider everything else open to discussion. If your child is unwilling to discuss something, don’t insist he should tell you what’s on his mind. The more you insist, the more likely that he’ll clam up. Instead, let him attempt to solve things by himself. At the same time, remind him that you’re always there for him, should he look for advice or help. Show respect for your teenager’s privacy. Never read his mail or listen to personal conversations.
Teach your teenager that the family phone is for the whole family. If your child talks on the family’s telephone for too long, tell him he can talk for l5 minutes, but then he must stay off the phone for at least an equal period of time. This not only frees up the line so that other family members can make and receive calls, but teaches your teenager moderation (节制). Or if you are open to the idea, allow your teenager his own phone that he pays for with his own pocket money or a part-time job.
(28)What is this text mainly about
A.Schooling. B.Parenting. C.House-keeping D.Friend-making
(29)What does the phrase "clam up" in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A.become excited B.show respect C.refuse to talk D.seek help
(30)By limiting their phoning time, the children are expected to learn to_____.
A.have others in mind B.be the best of themselves
C.spend more time to study D.communicate face-to-face
(31)What’s the message for parents from this text
A.Watch their children closely all the time.
B.Leave their children completely alone.
C.Give their children enough freedom.
D.Work together with the school.

The iPhone, the iPad: each of Apple’s products sounds cool and has become a fashion. Apple has cleverly taken advantage of the power of the letter “i” --- and many other brands are following suit. The BBC’s iPlayer --- which allows Web users to watch TV programs on the Internet ---used the title in 2008. A lovely bear --- popular in the US and UK --- that plays music and video is called “iTeddy”. A slimmed-down version(简装本) of London’s Independent newspaper was started last week under the name “i”.
In general, single-letter prefixes(前缀) have been popular since the 1990s, when terms like e-mail first came into use.
Most “i” products are aimed at young people and considering the major readers of independent’s “i”, it’s no surprise that they’ve selected this fashionable name.
But it’s hard to see what’s so special about the letter “i”. Why not use “a”, “b”, or “c” instead According to Tony Thorne, head of the Language Center at King’s College, London, “i” works because its meaning has become ambiguous. When Apple uses “i”, no one knows whether it means Internet, information, individual or interactive, Thorne told BBC Magazines. “Even when Apple created the iPod, it seems it didn’t have one clear definition(定义),” he says.
“However, thanks to Apple, the term is now connected with portability (轻便) .”adds Thorne.
※Clearly the letter “i” also agrees with the idea that the Western World is centered on the individual. Each person believes they have their own needs, and we love personalized products for this reason.
Along with “Google” and “blog”, readers of BBC Magazines voted “i” as one of the top 20 words that have come to define the last ten years.
But as history shows, people grow tired of fashions. From the 1900s to 1990s, products with “2000” in their names became fashionable as the year was connected with all things advanced and modern. However, as we entered the new century, the fashion disappeared.
(32) People use iPlayer to __________.
A.read newspapers B.watch TV programs online
C.make a call D.listen to music
(33)We can infer that the Independent’s “i” is designed for _________.
A.engineers B.old readers
C.fashionable women D.young readers
(34)Paragraph 6 connects the power of “i” with ________.
A.Apple’s products B.information technology
C.the Western culture D.the Internet
(35)The last paragraph suggests that __________.
A.the popularity of “i” products may not last long
B.the letter “b” replace letter “i” to name the products
C.fashions don’t necessarily change with time
D.“i” products are often of high quality
