Dear David,
Knowing that you will travel abroad in the coming holiday, I’m pleased to recommend some tourist attractions in Canada to you.
Rather than travelling by airline all the way, I highly recommend you take the train to cross the vast land. Recognized as a tourist city of Canada, Toronto is a city you can never miss. With a long history and various tourist attractions, it attracts thousands of tourists every year. What will amaze you most is the Great Lakes, where the blue water will literally take your breath away. In addition, the art galleries and theaters are well worth visiting. Besides, the local seafood will surely be appealing to you.
I would be more than glad if you could take my suggestions into account. Wish you a pleasant and rewarding journey in Canada.
Yours,
Li Hua

How was he supposed to turn and tell his family that he didn’t have enough money to take them to the circus The eight children have no idea of what happened, they stared at the father, with their eyes shining with expectation. His face turned pale and stood there tongue-tied. Seeing what was going on, my dad put his hand in his pocket, pulled out a $20 bill and dropped it on the ground.
My father reached down, picked up the bill, tapped the man and said, “Excuse me, sir, this fell out of your pocket.” The man knew what was going on. He certainly appreciated the help in a desperate, heartbreaking, embarrassing situation. He looked straight into my dad’s eyes, took my dad’s hand, squeezed tightly onto the $20 bill, and with his lip quivering and a tear running down his cheek, he replied, “Thank you, thank you, sir. This really means a lot to me and my family.”My father and I went back to our car and drove home. We didn’t go to the circus that night, but we didn’t go without.

Text 10
W: Who doesn't love sitting beside a cosy fire on a cold winter's night Who doesn't love to watch flames curling up a chimney Fire is one of man's greatest friends, but also one of his greatest enemies. Many big fires are caused by carelessness. A lighted cigarette thrown out of a car or train window or a broken bottle lying on dry grass can start a fire. Sometimes, though, a fire can start on its own. Wet hay can begin burning by itself. This is how it happens: the hay starts to rot and begins to give off heat which is trapped inside it. Finally, it bursts into flames. That's why farmers cut and store their hay when it's dry.
Fires have destroyed whole cities. In the 17th century, a small fire which began in a baker's shop burnt down nearly every building in London. Moscow was set on fire during the war against Napoleon. This fire continued burning for seven days. And, of course, in 64 AD Rome burned! Even today, in spite of modern fire-fighting methods, fire causes millions of pounds' worth of damage each year, both in our cities and in the countryside. It has been wisely said that fire is a good servant but a bad master.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳答案。

Unusual Things that Famous People Did
Leonardo Da Vinci And His Sleep Schedule
Da Vinci was a painter, an engineer, a writer, a sculptor, an inventor, an architect, a pioneer in exploring human anatomy, an eager animal lover and possibly one of the most famous vegetarians who ever lived. It seems that there’s nothing that this man did not do. Yet there was, it was sleeping. He wasn’t a fan of it and after conducting careful research and building up his knowledge, he started following the multiphase sleep cycle. To put it in other words, Da Vinci’s sleep would consist of several short naps every 24 hours. Being The Renaissance man is not so easy.
Leo Tolstoy And His Shoes
The giant of the Russian literature, Lev Tolstoy not only wrote historically accurate books, but he himself became of historical importance while still being alive. Despite coming from the highest layers of society, Tolstoy eventually started questioning the moral of society that he lived in and started following his own path. He became a vegetarian, started following a vigorous daily routine and denounced the looks of a rich man. He started wearing peasant clothes and shoes, which, despite not being too skilled, were made by himself.
Ludwig Van Beethoven And The 60 Coffee Beans
Ludwig van Beethoven did write the glorious “Symphony No. 9”, which is now the anthem of European Union, while being already deaf, but, of course, that’s just the tip of the iceberg of his input into musical history. Yet stellar results require astronomic discipline. Each morning Beethoven counted by hand 60 coffee beans from which he would make his perfect cup of coffee. Also, in order to restart his creative muscles after writing too much music, he would pour cold water on his head.
When did Leonardo Da Vinci sleep
A. He stayed up late everyday.
B. He followed strict sleep cycle.
C. He went to sleep every twenty-fourth hour.
D. He had a rest from time to time every twenty-four hours.
22. What did Leonardo Da Vinci and Leo Tolstoy have in common
They didn’t eat any meat or fish.
They were both dressed in their own style.
They were both the giant of the European literature.
They were both the experts in historical exploration.
23. How did Ludwig Van Beethoven get his creative inspiration
He would avoid showering.
He would count 60 coffee beans.
He would stay astronomic discipline.
He would pour cold water on his head.

Harry looked at the black alleyway. If only it would move, then he’d know whether it was just a stray cat or — something else. “Lumos,” Harry muttered, and a light appeared at the end of his wand(魔杖). He held it high over his head, and the pebble-dashed walls of number two suddenly sparkled; the garage door shone, and between them Harry saw, quite distinctly, the giant outline of something very big, with wide, gleaming eyes.
Harry stepped backward. His legs hit his trunk and he tripped. His wand flew out of his hand as he cast out an arm to break his fall, and he landed, hard, in the gutter(阴沟) — There was a deafening BANG, and Harry threw up his hands to shield his eyes against a sudden blinding light — With a yell, he rolled back onto the pavement, just in time. A second later, a gigantic pair of wheels and headlights screamed to a stop exactly where Harry had just been lying. They belonged, as Harry saw when he raised his head, to a triple-decker(三层), violently purple bus, which had appeared out of thin air. Gold lettering over the windshield spelled The Knight Bus.
For a second, Harry wondered if he had been knocked silly by his fall. Then a conductor in a purple uniform leapt out of the bus and began to speak loudly to the night.
“Welcome to the Knight Bus, emergency transport for the isolated witch or wizard(巫师). Just stick out your wand hand, step on board, and we can take you anywhere you want to go. My name is Stan Shunpike, and I will be your conductor this eve —”
The conductor stopped suddenly. He had just caught sight of Harry, who was still sitting on the ground. Harry grabbed his wand again and struggled to his feet.

Today, anxiety disorders are the most common mental health issues in the US, affecting 30% of adults. In 2021, a survey of 8,000 children led Oxford University Press named anxiety as the Word of the Year. “It’s the word on everyone’s lip, the challenge of the moment,” Dr. Tracy Dennis Tiwary says, a professor of psychology, immersed in research — evaluating which mental health treatment worked and why.
The idea that anxiety is something to manage or eradicate, a habit to be broken, is wrong and actually doing us harm. It’s literally a recipe for more anxiety. This is central message in Dennis Tiwary’s new book, Future Tense. She concludes that the problem isn’t anxiety itself, but our belief about it and our attempts to avoid it, which are not only destined to fail, but make us weaker and more fragile. It’s a vicious cycle.
To help reframe anxiety as an ally not an enemy, Dennis takes a deep dive into the emotion itself. Anxiety is different to fear, which is the certainty that something bad is happening to you. Anxiety is about uncertainty; it’s the feeling that something bad could happen, but might not. Unlike fear, anxiety contains hope. Anxiety can focus the mind, drive you to revise harder, to see a doctor, to seek new pathways towards your chosen career.
Anxiety helps us forge forwards with creative solutions, but there are times when there is little we can do to address a future uncertainty. Dennis suggests many ways of coping with it. Connecting with friends and family is a soothing first step. Cultivating things that immerse you in the present moment is also helpful. Our emotional systems are like immune systems. If it isn’t exposed to germs, it remains weak. It’s only by feeling our anxiety, listening and acting on it that we cope better next time.
What is a common misunderstanding of anxiety
Anxiety is wrong and doing us harm.
Anxiety is the challenge of the moment.
Anxiety is difficult to change, as a habit.
Anxiety is something to manage or eradicate.
What does the underlined word “vicious” mean in paragraph 2

31. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. How to Cope with Anxiety.
B. Anxiety can be Good for You.
C. Anxiety — the Word of the Year.
D. Dennis Tiwary’s New Book — Future Tense.

What does it take to contain two of the biggest companies on the planet South Korean politicians and Dutch dating apps, apparently. They seem to be succeeding where America’s federal government has failed: to force changes to the way Apple and Google run their app stores.
The app stores are big businesses, with combined sales last year of $133bn, three times the total five years earlier. Apple and Google take a cut of up to 30%, which began in Apple’s iTunes music store and was copied to its iPhone app store, launched in 2008. As people came to use their phones for gaming, streaming and much else, it evolved into a tax on digital activity. Sign up to a service like Disney+ on your phone and Apple or Google get a cut of your subscription(订阅) for ever. Apps have had to use the tech’s own payment systems, and could not tell users about other ways to sign up.
Last summer South Korea banned app stores from forcing developers to use a particular payment system. In December Dutch regulators made a similar ruling against Apple, after a complaint by developers of dating apps. On March 23rd the trend went global.
A bigger threat comes from the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), approved in draft form on March 24th. The DMA, which is on track to come into force next year, would force mobile platforms to allow third-party app stores and “sideloading”(旁加载) of apps directly from the web — something Google permits but Apple does not. Offenders face fines of up to 20% of worldwide revenue and bans on acquisitions(收购).
Apple’s boss, Tim Cook, has warned that sideloading would “destroy the security of the iPhone”. That is a bit much: Apple allows sideloading on its desktop computers without damage. But Apple’s much bigger share of the mobile market could make the iPhone a juicier target for malware(恶意软件). And the company trades heavily on privacy and security.
32. How can Apple and Google manage their app stores
A. Get users’ subscription for free.
B. Take a 30% cut of subscription.
C. Let apps use third-party payment systems.
D. Tell users to sign up services on their app stores.
33. What will the DMA allow the app stores do in the text
A. To approve in draft.
B. To advertise other ways to sign up.
C. To permit third-party app stores and sideloading.
D. To face fine of up to 20% of worldwide revenue.
34. Which word best describes the Apple’s attitude to sideloading on mobile platform
A. Unfavorable. B. Tolerant.
C. Skeptical. D. Indifferent.
35. What’s the main idea of the text
A. Sideloading is safe on desktop computers and iPhone.
B. The app stores’ payment systems are about to change.
C. Apple and Google’s profits are threatened by laws and lawsuits.
D. South Korean politicians and Dutch dating apps changes Apple and Google.

Citizens are alarmed by the climate crisis. However, most believe that they have already done more to preserve the planet than anyone else, and few are willing to make significant lifestyle changes, an international survey carried 56 in ten countries has found.
The survey contained a double lessons for governments, who have, first, to measure up to people’s 57 (expect), and also have to persuade people of 58 the solutions are.
The survey found that 62% of the respondents saw the climate crisis as the main environmental challenge. However, when 59 (ask) to rate their individual action against others’, people generally saw 60 (they) as much more committed to the environment than others in their local community.
Measures that are likely to affect their own lifestyles, however, were viewed by respondents as significantly less important. 61 (reduce) people’s energy consumption was seen as 62 priority by only 32%. Favoring public transport over cars (25%) and 63 (dramatic) changing our agricultural model (24%) were similarly unpopular.
“Citizens 64 (concern) with the state of the planet, but these findings raise doubts about their level of commitment to preserving it,” the study said. “Rather than translating into a 65 (great) willingness, citizens are particularly focused on their negative assessment of governments’ efforts.”

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The Circus
Once, when I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus. My family weren’t well off at that time, we can only come to see it once a year. Finally, there was only one family between us and the ticket counter.
This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of 12. You could tell they didn’t have a lot of money.
Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children were well-behaved, all of them standing in line, two-by-two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly discussing about the clowns, elephants, and other acts they would see that night.
One could sense they had never been to the circus before. It promised to be a highlight of their young lives. The father and mother were at the head of the pack, standing proud as could be. The mother was holding her husband’s hand, looking up at him as if to say, “You’re my knight in shining armor.” He was smiling in pride, looking back at her as if to reply, “You got that right.”
The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded, “Please let me buy eight children’s tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus.”
