When someone asks me what my goals are for the coming year, I don’t usually know how to reply. Of course I, as most people do, want to see an improvement in my grades. This year, however, I’m hoping for something different.
Through the course of my school life, I’ve gradually developed a new understanding of the word “prioritization (优先次序)”. The first thing I wish to get in Senior 1 is the ability to manage my time better. I’ll surely become busier with the coming semester, and proper organization is important. From school clubs to academic competitions, everything should be set up in a way that doesn’t influence my health, which leads me to my second goal.
My mother has always told me put my health first, so in the future, I hope to both physically and mentally healthy. A person can’t study without having the energy to do so. In order to stay energetic, they must put their health first, no matter how busy they are, or how much work they have to complete.
And finally, I hope that I won’t be discouraged by my failure and never give up on my dreams. I hope that I’ll have the courage to try new activities and clubs. I believe my final goal can apply to every student around the world. We should all respect one another’s likes and dislikes, and focus on each other’s strengths, not our weaknesses. Everyone should try to take part in all of life’s opportunities.
Albert Einstein once said, “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” In my case, it’s the other way around. In order to keep moving, I must keep my balance—the balance between studies and activities, efficiency and procrastination (拖延症), academics and health, passions and dislikes. The new journey is going to be a hard one, but if I establish these goals, I believe I will make it through to the end.
24. During this school year, what does the author hopes to do
A. Focus on improving her overall grades. B. Join as many school clubs as possible.
C. Learn how to manage her time well. D. Spend more time on outdoor activities.
25. According to the article, which of the following students should do
A. Always put their studies first. B. Not be afraid of failing.
C. Only do what they're good at. D. Make different kinds of friends.
26. What does the underlined word in the last paragraph mean
A. A strong feeling of dislike B. A strong feeling of love
C. A strong feeling of anger D. A strong feeling of joy
27. What does the author intend to do
A. Show what she likes about high school life. B. Stress the importance of health to students.
C. Show how to balance our studies and activities. D. Share her goals for the coming high school year.

Chinese cuisine is widely known and enjoyed all around the world. Who doesn’t long for a favourite Chinese dish But there is one interesting concept concerning Chinese food which is almost unheard in the West, and which is becoming increasingly ignored by the youth of the East — the ancient custom of tonic food.
Tonic food is food which is consumed to improve one’s well-being or avoid sickness. For instance, it was once the custom for new mothers to eat a sesame oil hotpot every day for the first month after giving birth. It was believed that this dish would benefit the muscles, reduce pain, improve circulation, stimulate sweating, and warm the body. Some foods, such as goat meat and spinach (菠菜), are seen as “hot”, while others, such as Chinese cabbage and radishes (小萝卜), are seen as “cold”. One should be careful not to eat too much of either “hot” or “cold” food. However, how much “hot” or “cold” food one should eat depends on the time of the year, how the food is prepared and what it is prepared with, and the individual’s health.
The custom of employing tonic food for a healthier life also influences the catering industry. Chinese herbal medicines, such as the wolfberry (枸杞子), can be found on many a restaurant menu, either added to fruit tea or as a beneficial addition to a dish. These herbs attract customers, such as overworked office staff in need of a modest pick-me-up.
So, whether you need to boost your strength with a large helping of chicken soup, or increase your mental powers with some fish soup, you may find that this ancient Chinese custom could be just the tonic you were looking for.
28. What is the present situation of tonic food
A. It is catching less attention.
B. It is enjoyed by many young people.
C. It is well known worldwide.
D. It is becoming increasingly popular.
29. What is believed to benefit new mothers
A. Chinese cabbage. B. Fruit tea.
C. Sesame oil hotpot. D. Fish soup.
30. Which of the following best explains “catering” underlined in paragraph 3
A. Medicine. B. Restaurant. C. Education. D. Fashion.
31. What is the author’s purpose of writing this passage
A. To present the charm of Chinese cuisine.
B. To show the popularity of tonic food.
C. To introduce Chinese tonic food.
D. To tell the differences between hot food and cold food.

You have probably heard of the Mozart effect. It’s the idea that if children or even babies listen to music composed of Mozart, they will become more intelligent. A quick Internet search shows plenty of products to assist you in the task. Whatever your age, there are CDs and books to help you taste the power of Mozart’s music, but when it comes to scientific evidence that it can make you more clever, the picture is more mixed.
The phrase “the Mozart effect” was made up in 1991, but it was a study described two years later in the journal Nature that aroused real media and public interest about the idea that listening to classical music somehow improves the brain. It is one of those ideas that sound reasonable. Mozart was no doubt a genius himself; his music is complex and there is a hope that if we listen to enough of it, we’ll become more intelligent.
The idea took off, with thousands of parents playing Mozart to their children, and in 1998 Zell Miller, the Governor of the state of Georgia in the USA, even asked for money to be set aside in the state budget so that every newborn baby could be sent a CD of classical music. It was not just babies and children who were exposed to Mozart’s music on purpose, even an Italian farmer proudly explained that the cows were played Mozart three times a day to help them to produce better milk.
I’ll leave the debate on the effect on milk production to farmers, but what about the evidence that listening to Mozart makes people more intelligent More research was carried out but an analysis of 16 different studies confirmed (证实) that listening to music does lead to a temporary improvement in the ability to handle shapes mentally, but the benefits are short-lived and it doesn’t make us more intelligent.
32. What can we learn from Paragraph 1
A. Mozart composed many musical pieces for children.
B. Children listening to Mozart will be more intelligent
C There are few products on the Internet about Mozart’s music
D. There is little scientific evidence to support the Mozart effect.
33. The underlined phrase in Paragraph 3 suggests that
A. people were strongly against the idea.
B. the idea was accepted by many people.
C. Mozart played an important part in people’s life.
D. the US government helped promote the idea.
34. What’s the author’s attitude towards the Mozart effect
A. Favorable. B. Objective. C. Doubtful. D. Positive.
35. What is the best title for the passage
A. Listening to Mozart, necessary
B. What music is beneficial
C. What is the Mozart effect
D. To be or not to be

Yoghurt
It was a rough week. The price of oil skyrocketed as the temperature dropped sharply in Maine. We were looking at a high of eight degrees that week, and I had missed three days of work so my paycheck was going to be lower than normal. I was stressed, to say the least. I shopped strategically, looking for every possible way to cut pennies so I could buy groceries and keep the house warm.
My eight-year-old son didn't understand when I told him we were struggling that week. He wanted a special kind of yoghurt, but I didn't have the extra three dollars to buy it for him. It was the kind of yoghurt with a cartoon kid riding a skateboard on the front of the box, and a mere two spoonfuls in each cup. It was the kind of product that wastes a parent's money and makes me hate advertising.
I felt guilty as a parent when those big eyes looked at me with confusion, as if to say, “It's just yoghurt. What's the big deal ” So I found a way. I put something back as single mothers often do. He got his yoghurt.
On the way driving back from the grocery store, I noticed a homeless man holding a sign by the side of the road. My heart hurt, and I tried not to look at him. I watched people stay away from him on the street and walk by without even meeting his eyes. My son didn't seem to care much, either. I looked at the man closely then — bare hands grasping a piece of cardboard, snot frozen to his face, a worn-out jacket. And there I was struggling because I had to buy oil and groceries. But I decided to help. I pulled over to the man and handed him a five-dollar bill.
Paragraph 1:
Seeing this, my son became confused and surprised.

Paragraph 2:
On that day, my son performed an act that most adults wouldn’t have done.

31. What is the author’s purpose of writing this passage
A. To present the charm of Chinese cuisine.
B. To show the popularity of tonic food.
C. To introduce Chinese tonic food.
D. To tell the differences between hot food and cold food.
【答案】28. A 29. C 30. B 31. C

D. To be or not to be
【答案】32. D 33. B 34. C 35. A

【分析】这是一篇说明文。文章讲述很多人相信听莫扎特的音乐会让人更聪明,但是研究表明这种影响是短暂的,并不能让人们更加聪明。
【32题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中“Whatever your age, there are CDs and books to help you taste the power of Mozart’s music, but when it comes to scientific evidence that it can make you more clever, the picture is more mixed.(无论你处在什么年龄,总有唱片和书能让你感受莫扎特音乐的魅力,但是当谈到莫扎特音乐能让你更聪明的科学证据时,情况更复杂了)”可知,没有什么科学证据来支持莫扎特音乐能让你更聪明,也就是莫扎特效应,故选D。
【33题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中“The idea took off, with thousands of parents playing Mozart to their children(这个观点很流行,很多父母给孩子听莫扎特的音乐)”以及“It was not just babies and children who were exposed to Mozart’s music on purpose, even an Italian farmer proudly explained that the cows were played Mozart three times a day to help them to produce better milk.(不仅婴儿和儿童有意地接触莫扎特音乐,甚至一位意大利的农民让他的牛一天听三次莫扎特音乐来帮助他们产更好的牛奶)”可知,不管是婴儿还是儿童,他们的父母都会给他们听莫扎特的音乐,甚至还有人给牛放莫扎特音乐让他们产奶。由此推知,划线词组表明这种想法被大部分人接受。故选B。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“More research was carried out but an analysis of 16 different studies confirmed (证实) that listening to music does lead to a temporary improvement in the ability to handle shapes mentally, but the benefits are short-lived and it doesn’t make us more intelligent.(很多研究被实施了,但是对于16种不同的研究分析证实了听音乐确实能暂时提高大脑处理形状的能力,但是这种影响是短暂的而且也不能让我们更聪明)”可知,作者对莫扎特效应的态度是怀疑的,故选C。
故选A。

64.考查介词。句意:所以,根据你的目标和健康状况,你可以考虑重新安排你的饮食,这样你就可以在早上胰岛素功能最有效的时候消耗更多的卡路里。本题考查固定搭配depend on/upon,意思为:取决于。故填:on/upon。
65.考查代词。句意:正如Kahleova所说,“早餐吃得像国王,午餐吃得像王子,晚餐吃得像乞丐”的古老建议背后有新的科学依据。分析句子可知,空处缺少代词指代“the ancient advice”作宾语,用it。故填:it。

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1:
Seeing this, my son became confused and surprised. “Mum, why are you so generous to this stranger while so mean to me when I asked for a yoghurt ” I explained that if we were blind to the poor man’s situation he would be freezing. He didn’t have a home or food to eat after all. We could spare five dollars even if we were financially stressed. Finally, my son nodded and fixed his eyes on his yoghurt.
Paragraph 2:
On that day, my son performed an act that most adults wouldn’t have done. He took his yoghurt and handed it to the man outside his window. Even if it was just a matter of a few spoonful of yoghurt, it was all he had, and he gave it to someone who needed it more than he wanted it. He showed me that I was doing well as a mother. There are always blessings to count if we open our eyes, and always have the opportunity to be a blessing for someone else.
