Dennis Sinner, 51, a doctor from New York, is quick to explain why he took a year-long break from his job. “I was pretty burned out after practicing medicine for 26 years. I needed a recharge.” So he took a “gap year” to explore things like ancient buildings, antique restoration, archaeology and traditional Eastern medicine, in locations including Alaska, Nepal and Romania.
“Taking a break from work is an excellent way for adults to go into a new career or refresh an old one,” said Holly Bull, president of Princeton, N, J. “In recent years, mid-career breaks have been gaining more interest,” she said. A report on adult gap years published this year by a market research company also described the potential American market for gap years as a “sleeping giant.”
“A gap year is a challenge for the older individual to step out of a comfort zone and take a risk. I enjoyed that side most.” said Dr. Sinner, who kept a daily blog about his experience. His time studying Eastern medicine “assured the reasons I went into health care,” said Dr. Sinner, who returned to practice medicine at his old job, although he works fewer days. “I use those experiences to provide my patients with more care,” he added. “And I listen better than I did before.”
George Garrison, chairman of the Department of Leadership and Human Capital Management at New York University, certainly agrees with Dr. Sinner. He said a gap-year experience could be worthwhile for employees and companies. For employees, investing in themselves and improving skill sets is a move that will benefit throughout their career. He added that returning employees feel refreshed and have given more thought to their career. For companies, offering unpaid leaves makes good sense for attracting and keeping talented employees.
4. Dr. Sinner took a gap year because he ____.
A. had lost his old job B. became interested in historical research
C. had a desire for travelling D. wanted to refresh after 26 years' work
5. The phrase “sleeping giant” (in the 2nd paragraph) indicates that ____.
A. it's too early for people to accept the conception of gap year
B. more American people will accept the gap year policy
C. it's difficult to foresee the gap year market
D. the effect of gap year policy remains to be seen
6. What's George Garrison’s attitude toward the “gap year”?
A. Uninterested. B. Doubtful. C. Positive. D. Uncertain.
7. What's the passage mainly about?
A. Why a gap year is worthwhile for adults.
B. How an adult plans a mid-career gap year.
C. Whether a gap year is popular with adults.
D. Why a gap year is challenging for individuals.
C
If you want to know how crazy people can be about their pets, you might remember that Helmsmen left $12 million to her little Maltese dog when she died last year.
The dog's name is Trouble. And apparently Trouble is still alive. Of course, I would hang on, too, if someone left me $12 million. Look! Top-shelf dog food, soft pillows everywhere, drivers walking me in nice leafy parks. I would live to be 110 in dog years.
The dog's story is still fresh in my mind the other night when I leave a steak house after a superb meal. Then I notice a woman carrying a small bag out of the door behind me.
Once outside, she walks over to where a man is holding a tiny dog and it's a baby. The dog looks like a Maltese, too, barking and annoying, with a cute haircut.
And now I am treated to an absolute astonishing sight. Because now the woman reaches into the bag and begins pulling out little pieces of meat, which she puts on a plastic spoon and feeds to the dog.
This is no cheap steak house. It's actually, way out of my league—I'm there only because it's a special occasion. I can tell you this: if I walked out of the place with any leftover steak, it sure wouldn't go to a dog. Not at those prices.
So now the woman is spoon-feeding the dog and the man is just standing there, holding this dog and looking as if this is the most normal thing in the world. And the dog is calmly chewing these pieces of steak as if he's a little king. And this dog is in no hurry. He's having a great time.
A few minutes go by, and now the dog finishes all of his steak. At this point, I hear the woman say to the man “Think he's still hungry?” And she glances behind her at the restaurant, as if she might go back in there to get more steak for the dog.
Watching all this, I'm afraid I'm going to shout, “Are you out of your mind? Feeding all that pricey steak to that little dog? Did you see what our American life is like today? We're all going to be eating dog food if this keeps up!”
8. Why would the author live to be 110 in dog years?
A. Because he is always in poor health and falls ill.
B. Because a Maltese dog lives longer than a human being.
C. Because he thinks the dog is treated extremely well.
D. Because his grandparents left him a large sum of money.
9. What is the story mainly about?
A. A pet dog being fed with expensive food.
B. A Maltese dog getting $12 million from its owner.
C. A New Yorker spending $8 billion for a few banks.
D. An American family's happy life.
10. The underlined sentence “It's actually way out of my league.” (in Para. 6) means ____.
A. the dog doesn't belong to the author's group
B. the author hates the dog being taken there
C. the superb restaurant is about to be out of service
D. the restaurant is too expensive for the author
11. Seeing the dog is being treated to expensive steak, the author becomes extremely ____.
A. indifferent B. annoyed C. concerned D. envious
D
A rapidly advancing contemporary science that is highly dependent on new tools is Earth system science. Earth system science involves observation and measurements on the Earth at all scales from the largest to the smallest. The huge amounts of data that are gathered come from many different locations and require special techniques for handling data. Important new tools that facilitate Earth system science include satellite remote sensing, small deep-sea submarines, and geographic information systems.
More than any other way of gathering evidence, satellite observations continually remind us that each part of the Earth interacts with and is dependent on all other parts.
Earth system science was born from the realization of that interdependence. Satellite remote sensing makes possible observations at large scales, and in many cases, measurements of factors that could not otherwise be measured. For example, the ozone hole over Antarctica—the decrease in the concentration of ozone high in the atmosphere—is measured by remote sensing, as are changes in deserts, forests, and farmlands around the world. Such measurements can be used in many areas of specialization besides Earth system science. Archaeology, for example, has benefited from satellite observations that reveal the traces of ancient trade routes across the Arabian Desert.
New tools for exploring previously inaccessible areas of the Earth have also added greatly to our knowledge of the Earth system. Small deep-sea submarines allow scientists to travel to the depths of the ocean. There they have discovered new species and ecosystems thriving near deep-sea vents that emit heat, sasses, and mineral-rich water.
Just as important as new methods of measurement and exploration are new ways to store and analyze data about the Earth puter-based software programs known as geographic information systems, or GIS, allow a large number of data points to be stored along with their locations. These can be used to produce maps and to compare different sets of information gathered at different times. For example, satellite remote sensing images of a forest can be converted to represent stages in the forest's growth. Two such images, made at different times can be overlaid and compared, and the changes that have taken place can be represented in a new image.
12. The word “facilitate” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to ____.
A. examine B. require C. organize D. enable
13. The author of the passage mentions that satellite observations are especially effective in ____.
A. demonstrating interactions among all of Earth's parts
B. predicting future climate changes
C. providing data to determine Earth's age
D. conducting scientific studies of life on the ocean floor
14. According to the passage, satellite observations of the Arabian Desert allow archaeologists to know ____.
A. evidence of former lakes B. indications of ancient routes
C. traces of early farms D. remains of ancient forests
15. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Special techniques are needed to classify the huge amounts of data about Earth.
B. Advances in Earth system science have resolved many environmental problems.
C. New tools provide information about Earth that was once impossible to obtain.
D. Satellite remote sensing can show changes between two images taken years agar

This morning while I was surfing the Internet, a photo caught my attention. In the photo there was a dustman who was on a drip under a tree by the roadside. It turned out that he insisted on working despite illness. Anyone seeing this would be deeply touched.
We must admit that dustmen like him are doing tiring work for long hours but usually get low pay. However, it is all because of their hard work that we can live and work in a clean environment. Therefore, they deserve our respect.
Then what can we do in return for their hard work? Actually it is very simple—care for our environment and don't leave rubbish everywhere, especially in public places.
