Stephen Hawking, the most famous physicist of his time, passed away at the age of 76.
A family spokesman said Hawking, who was British, died peacefully early Wednesday at his home in Cambridge, England. Hawking was known worldwide for working to explain subjects like the origins of the universe and the complexities of black holes. He was diagnosed with a disease called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis,or ALS, at age 21. At the time, doctors predicted he would only live a few years. But he proved them wrong by surviving for more than 50 years and continuing his scientific work.
In his 2013 book, My Brief History, Hawking wrote about first learning of the illness: “I felt it was very unfair—why should this happen to me ” He added: "At the time, I thought my life was over and that I would never realise the potential I felt I had." "But now, 50 years later, I can be quite satisfied with my life,” he wrote.
A sign of his being admired came in October 2017, when Cambridge put Hawking's 1966 thesis on the Internet for the first time. Demand for the thesis was so high that it caused the university’s website to go down.
Hawking said belief in a God who intervenes(介入) in the universe "to make sure the good guys win or get rewarded in the next life” was wishful thinking.
“But one can’t help asking the question: Why does the universe exist ” he said in 1991. “I don’t know an operational way to give the question or the answer, if there is one, a meaning. But it bothers me."
Hawking was a big supporter of human space travel to the Moon and Mars. He said such missions would help unite humanity in a shared purpose of spreading the human race beyond Earth. “We are running out of space and the only places to go to are other worlds. It is time to explore other solar systems. Spreading out may be the only thing that saves us from ourselves. I am convinced that humans need to leave the Earth,” he said.
1.What is Hawking's attitude towards life when just diagnosed with ALS
A.Optimistic. B.Hopeless. C.Disappointed. D.Confident.
2.What bothered Hawking
A.The origins of the universe.
B.The intervene of God in the universe.
C.The rewards that good people get in the next life.
D.The crash of the Internet.
3.Why is Hawking in favour of human space travel to other solar systems
A.Because we have used up all the space.
B.Because we have explored the Moon and Mars for a long time.
C.Because it can help spread the human race beyond Earth.
D.Because it is a way to save the Earth.

Superhero play encourages children to take part in role play by using the heroes in their lives to show positive values and self-respect. In recent years there have been some nurseries and schools which do not accept superhero play. However, early years teachers and parents can make use of a child’s interest in superheroes as an opportunity to encourage children to do many exciting activities that can support all areas of their development. This type of play develops cooperation, improves their imaginative ability and helps children to develop a sense of right and wrong in a safe environment.
When they run, jump and climb, they develop their basic motor skills, and the repetition of phrases and acting out scenes help to develop their vocabulary. In fact, when we try and put an end to this type of play, we may lose a good way to teach children. For example,a Lego model of a gun can rapidly become a useful tool to help children learn different things.
“It’s important to recognize that we don’t teach the children how to play with guns,” says Chris Langdon, Bright Horizons Regional Manager, “but address their interests.” By using children’s imaginations to copy superheroes’ behavior, we have an excellent opportunity to introduce all areas of learning, including reading and maths. Chris suggests,“When playing knights, you can ask them to draw numbers in the air with their swords. It is essential to be adaptable, flexible and willing to change the activity.”
Chris concludes that the children’s focus can change really quickly. “Ask the children what they want to do and know," says Chris,“and do your own superhero research, otherwise you will lose their trust.”
1.What’s the author’s attitude towards superhero play
A.Supportive.
B.Negative.
C.Confused.
D.Unconcerned.
2.When children repeat phrases and act out scenes, they ____________.
A.improve their language skills
B.develop their basic motor skills
C.are likely to become impatient
D.will change their positive values
3.What does Chris mean by mentioning the example of playing knights
A.Children can develop their imaginative skills.
B.Children can learn how to play with weapons.
C.More knowledge can be brought in superhero play.
D.More respect can be shown to heroes from children.
4.What’s the aim of the last paragraph
A.To conclude the function of superhero play.
B.To remind people to know more about children.
C.To analyze why children’s focus changes quickly.
D.To encourage people to research into more superheroes.

Compared with traditional methods of recording life experiences, such as the journal, the blog, and Weibo, there appears to be a new kind of equipment— lifelogging, which records every little thing that goes on in your life through pictures.
Only catching the special times of your life is fast becoming a thing of the past. With lifelogging, it’s just like downloading your whole life, minute by minute, and storing it on your computer so that you can always remember exactly what happened in the past.
Lifelogging is usually done with small cameras that take pictures and also record continuous videos. These devices are small in size and can be attached to clothes, so every moment can be recorded with ease. One such device is the Memoto, a camera about the size of a stamp which takes a photograph every 30 seconds. Memoto aims to give you pictures of every single moment of your life with complete information on where and when you took them. Zeo is a device that records your brain activity as you sleep. It can produce a graph (图表)that you can look at in the morning. So it’s possible to know things like how long it took you to sleep after you hit the bed and how many hours of deep sleep you actually enjoyed.
Lifelogging sounds great in a way, but the practice does come with its own set of drawbacks. Users are always at the risk of revealing(揭示)too much information about themselves. There is also the question of the private rights of thousands of other people associated with lifeloggers who would be included in these records. Director of the British Institute of Human Rights, Stephen Bowen, says, "This kind of technology changes our ideas of privacy and offers lots of opportunities to observe our every move in real time. ”
1.What do we know about lifelogging
A.It can work well without a camera.
B.It records people’s working activities.
C.It came into being before the blog and Weibo.
D.It can record every single moment of the day.
2.What is Zeo used for
A.Studying how long it takes people to sleep.
B.Recording people’s brain activity during their sleep.
C.Taking pictures and producing graphs based on them.
D.Giving information on when and where people take pictures.
3.What does underlined word “ drawbacks” probably mean
A.Disadvantages. B.Strengths. C.Changes. D.Explanations.
4.What would he the best title for the passage
A.Disadvantages of Modern Lifelogging
B.The Development of Modern Technology
C.A New Way of Recording Life Experiences
D.The Difference Between Weibo and Lifelogging

There wasn’t an opportunity for British people to be an astronaut until very recently. You'd watch British citizens like Michael Foale, Nicholas Patrick and Piers Sellers move to the US, change their nationality and become astronauts with NASA. They recruit(招募) every year. Britain’s policy of no human space flights changed only recently.
When I was selected for the European Space Agency in 2009, the UK Government was still not contributing to human space flights, but the astronaut selection was open for Brits to participate. There was a huge take-up from the public. Over 10,000 put their application forward from across Europe and in the final 22 we had five Brits. With so much competition,I thought my chances were slim,so I just took it one step at a time. Luckily, I was in the last 22 and finally I became an astronaut.
As an astronaut, you're an operator more than a scientist. We need to know how to carry out the experiments more than the detailed science going on in the experiments themselves. The most important thing for the astronaut is to know how the Space Station operates and how to maintain it. You've also got to know spacewalking in case you need to do repairs outside the Space Station.
There are probably 2,000 people who are operating the Space Station 24/7 from control centres around the world. As the astronauts work, they’ll be talking to the ground all the time about what they’re doing. There’ll also be a lot of cameras on board,so the ground team can see what’s going on and monitor the experiments themselves.
Between now and then,I’ll be spending a lot of time in Russia, learning about the solar system and the Russian segment(部分)of the Space Station. Russian language training is undertaken so that we can communicate. I've been learning it for four years and its still quite alien to me. Apparently, it's only the first 10 years that is hard.
1.Why did some British citizens change their nationality
A.Because they didn't want to live in Britain.
B.Because they wanted to earn more money in NASA.
C.Because they could become astronauts in this way.
D.Because they wanted to realize their American Dream.
2.What do we learn about the author when he applied for the European Space Agency
A.He didn't try hard to succeed.
B.He didn't get his hopes too high.
C.He was very confident about himself.
D.He didn’t really want to become an astronaut.
3.What should the astronauts do when they're working in space
A.Keep reporting on their acts.
B.Talk to other astronauts all the time.
C.Take a lot of pictures using cameras.
D.Focus on their work without doing anything else.
4.What can we know from the last paragraph
A.It is difficult for the author to learn Russian.
B.The author will work in Russia in the future.
C.It is no use taking Russian language training.
D.The author shows no interest in learning Russian

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
“Ouch! ” I howled in pain as I dropped the hammer onto my foot. I felt foolish.
It was pouring with rain, and, lame for a moment, I hopped around to the drivers side.
"No luck " said George. We had a flat tyre(轮胎) and I was trying to change the wheel. But it was stuck firmly.
We had driven ten hours along the road through the jungle without seeing another soul. In the distance was an ox working in the field.
"So what do we do now How can we find a garage " asked George, as I got back into the car.
About fifteen minutes later, the rain stopped. Out of the jungle came an old woman. She walked towards us carrying something long and thin.
“Uh,oh, here comes danger!” said George, “ She’s got a spear."
She was wearing traditional garments, with short sleeves, a colourful necklace and other jewelry. As she got closer, we saw the spear was just a wooden pole. I got out.
"Hello!" I said, in English. "Can you help us " I pointed to the wheel.
She stared at it, and then made a gesture to follow her back to the jungle. George and I looked at each other, and then set off after her.
Soon we came to a tent under some trees. It had a firm framework of wooden poles, like the one the woman was carrying, covered with heavy cloth, and fastened with rope made of some kind of loose plant fiber. All round were corn plants. It was harvest time for the grain, and a spade, a fork and other tools were lying on the ground. Nearby were some chicks and a rooster, and a pig tied to a post.
The woman folded back a cloth and invited us in. My eyes had to adjust to the darkness inside. The tent was furnished with a few mats on the floor, and a low table with a teapot. She picked up a photo and showed it to us. Was it her husband The man in the photo was bare to the waist. He looked much too young. She was probably a widow(寡妇). Maybe her son or her nephew
Our hostess poured some tea, and watched smiling as we drank.
"Say something, " said George.

I was wondering what to say when I heard the sound of footsteps out of the tent. We both looked up. It was exactly the young man in the photo but looked much stronger. The woman said something to him, looking at us smiling. “Need some help ” he asked. It’s amazing he was speaking very good English! George and I looked at each other, eyes lit up. "Yes, and we were wondering if you could have one of our tyres changed." "Follow me!" he said, sounding like sort of an order.
Paragraph 2 :
Together we walked back to the car. The man grabbed the wheel with one hand and a spanner with the other. With an outburst of shout, the tyre was loosened up. "You just need a bit of effort. Haha!" George and I stood there dumfounded watching him finishing the whole job, gratitude and admiration rushing in my heart. The knot that had been tired up by the pain in my foot, the cold soaking rain and the stubborn flat tyre was loosened up too, in the warm tea from the woman, the heroic shout of the man, the mountain view in the distance and the joy of being able to set off again.
