Whether it is elementary school, middle school, or high school in the United States, there will always be an awards ceremony at the end of the year. Though it varies from school to school, there are a few that are given by most schools across the nation.
The first one is given from grades 3 to 8 and it is the Honor Roll Award. In elementary and middle school, this award is used to recognize academic excellence. This award is also separated into two groups: A Honor Roll and A/B Honor Roll. It is given out at the end of a school year and students who receive all averages of a 93 or above (90 in some states) on a final report card receive an A Honor Roll, and students with grades above 85 (80 in some states) would receive an A/B Honor Roll. It is to reward students who have worked hard and received all A’s or A’s and B’s.
In high school, this is changed a bit, but still can be classified as the same type of award. The difference is that instead of using the scale (等级) of 100, they use a grade point average (GPA) based on a 4 point scale. They recognize students with a high GPA as “Honor Students”. If the student keeps it up for all four years of high school, then they graduate with honors.
Another notable award is the President’s Award for Educational Excellence. This is given by the President’s Education Awards Program each year to students all over the United States. This award is offered to elementary school, middle school and high school students. To be eligible (有资格的) for this award, middle school and elementary school students must earn an average grade of 90 or above on a 109 point scale. High school students must have a GPA of at least 3.5. Students must also have a high score on a statewide or national standardized test or have a recommendation from a teacher. Usually this award is given at the end of the year. It is a certificate with a signature from the president along with a letter of recognition.
However, many people confuse the President’s Award for Educational Excellence with another award, the US Presidential Scholars Program. Even though both have the word “President” in the title, they are completely different awards. Where the President’s Award for Educational Excellence is relatively easy to achieve, the award from the Presidential Scholars Program is not. To earn the honor of being a Presidential Scholar, a student must be a high school senior last year of high school with outstanding standardized test scores.
4. If, in most of the schools in the US, a student in Grade 5 wants to get A Honor Roll, he/she must get at least all averages of a ___.
A. 80 B. 85 C. 90 D. 93
5. From the passage we know that the students who ___ can graduate with honors.
A. keep up the grades of 100 in high school for more than one year
B. get averages of 100 in high school for all four years of high school
C. get a high GPA in high school for more than one year
D. are recognized as “Honor Students” for all four years of high school
6. If high school students are to win the President’s Award for Educational Excellence, which of the following statements should be included?
A. An average grade of 90 or above on a 100 point scale.
B. A recommendation from a teacher.
C. A GPA of at least 2.5 in a national standardized test.

Many foreign students report feeling lonely or unwelcome in Australia. Those feelings are among the reasons why Australia is taking a close look at its international education industry. But wherever international students go, making friends may not always be easy. Elisabeth Gareis of Baruch College in New York surveyed 454 international students. They were attending four-year colleges and graduate schools in the American South and Northeast.
Students from English-speaking countries and from northern and central Europe were more likely to be happy with their friendships. But 38% of the international students said they had no close friends in the United States. And half of the students from East Asia said they were unhappy with the number of American friends they had. Thirty percent said they wished their friendships could be deeper and more meaningful.
Professor Gareis says, “Students from East Asia have cultures that are different on many levels from the culture in the United States. There are also language problems, and maybe some social skills, such as small talks, which are possibly not as important in their native countries, where it’s not as important to start friendships with small talks. Many East Asian students blamed themselves for their limited friendships with Americans, for not speaking the language well enough and for not knowing the culture well enough.”
Ova’s Students Union blogger Jessica Stahl did her own survey to find out how American students and foreign students relate to each other. More than 100 students, about half of them American, answered her online questions. Half of the international students and 60% of the Americans said they related as well or better to the other group than to their own group.
Professor Gareis says, “International students who make friends with host nationals are, overall, more satisfied with their stay in the host country. They have better language skills, better academic performance and better attitudes toward the host country.”
8. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Making Friends Is Not Always Easy for Foreign Students
B. Students from East Asia Are Not Good at Making Friends
C. International Education Industry in Australia and America
D. The Relation between Foreign Students and Host Countries

A. culture shock should be blamed for many levels of American culture
B. foreign students don’t know small talks mean a lot to Americans
C. foreign students should learn some basic social skills first of all
D. foreign students have difficulty making friends for different reasons
10. How did Jessica Stahl carry out her survey?
A. By doing questionnaires from Students Union.
B. By asking questions on the Internet.
C. By forming the students into groups. D. By doing a survey through VOA.
11. Which of the following statements will the writer probably agree with?
A. International students like to make more friends in their own group.
B. International students are more likely to remain in the host country after graduation.
C. Students who make more friends at home have better academic performance.
D. Students who make friends in their host countries feel happier with their experience.

More and more people are choosing to take their holidays in the UK rather than travel abroad. In the late 1970s, air travel became affordable for the average family in the UK, and more and more British people started traveling abroad for their summer holidays. After all, the British weather wasn’t very good, even in summer, so a lot of British people left the UK for a vacation. Particularly popular with families on a budget was the “package holiday”, where the cost of flights and hotels were offered as one discounted price by travel agents.
In the 1980s and 1990s, young people in the UK became wealthier on average, or at least had more money left after they spent on the living cost. As a result, they started to go abroad in groups, to places such as Spain and Greece.
British holidaying habits have begun to change, however. Climate change means that the UK now has a hotter climate than before, so people do not need to go abroad to find good weather. Also, the credit problem has affected the international value of the British pound, so going abroad is more expensive than it used to be. As a result, more and more British people are choosing to spend their summer holidays in the UK.
This year, British hotels in areas such as the English Lake District have seen a 40 percent increase in booking compared with last year. That rise is mainly owing to the British staying in their own country for their holidays. In addition, however, foreign tourists are now finding the UK cheaper to visit than previously.
In the UK, the national tourism industry—when people go on holiday in their own country—is healthier than it has been in decades. The UK has always been famous for its international explorers. It is only just starting to discover itself, however.
12. The underlined phrase “package holiday” in Paragraph 2 means a holiday ___
A. offered by hotels B. with a package
C. including flights D. with less expense
13. We can infer from the passage that ___.
A. the value of British pound has become a huge problem
B. young people in the UK spend more than their parents
C. British people think of a hot summer as good weather
D. many Greek people leave for the UK for their business
14. Why do some British hotels have an increase in booking this year?
A. Because many people have seen the Lake District.
B. Because hotels in the Lake District are very cheap.
C. Because more British spend their holiday home.
D. Because foreign tourists have found these hotels.
15. What’s the writer’s attitude towards the British tourism industry?
A. Optimistic. B. Negative. C. Doubtful. D. Noble.

Do you prefer to travel by plane or by train? To my opinion, there are advantages and disadvantages traveling both by plane and by train. Travel by plane is timesaving, comfortably, and you can have a good rest on the trip, but it is too expensive. Unless you travel by train, it is not expensive and quite safety and you can appreciate the beautiful scenery on both sides of the railway. However, it was too crowded and time wasting, and we can take a good rest. So you can see every coin has its two sides. You’d better to choose either of them depend on your own interest and economy.

Dear Mr. Wilson,
Time flies! I’ve been back home. How I miss the days we spent together! All I saw and experienced will be part of my memory. It was your help and kindness that made my study and life in the UK special and enjoyable.
Thanks to your help, I got used to the life there soon. I still miss the delicious meals you prepared for me. Besides, I really appreciate your patience while talking with me. It was a wonderful time for me to improve my spoken English. And I also learned a lot about your country and the English culture.
I hope we can stay in touch with each other. I am looking forward to your coming to China in the near future.
Best wishes,
Li Hua
