Anne Holland’s speech
Dear Students, I am delighted to be your guest speaker today. It is a great pleasure to visit your school and to meet all of you.
I would like to tell you something about myself. I have been a news reporter for the past fifteen years. I chose this job so I could travel the world, but the job has taught me many unforgettable lessons. The work is sometimes difficult. I have seen famines, wars, earthquakes, poverty(贫穷) and death. But I have also seen courage, hope and happiness.
In India, I visited a city where there were many homeless children. Some were as young as four years old. They lived in the streets and survived by begging or stealing. But then a wonderful lady called Rosa opened a home for them. Within one year, she was looking after two hundred children. She clothed them, fed them and taught them. She gave them hope.
Another time, I was in Turkey after a terrible earthquake. In one place, I found an old lady whose house was in ruins. Her son was missing and rescue workers said there was no chance that he was still alive. But the old lady did not give up hope. For four days, she moved heavy stones one at a time by herself. She did not stop until she found her son. He was alive.
Here in China, I met a young boy with a serious medical condition. He had undergone twenty operations(手术) and spent nearly his whole life in hospital. I thought he would be sad, but when I met him, his smile was so warm and welcoming.
In life, we need models that we can admire(钦佩)and learn from. When my life is difficult, I try to remember the courage and goodness of these three people. 41. Anne Holland is __________ in a school.

The yearly Academy Awards ceremony was once a private affair. Now, because of television, it is very much a public affair. Hundreds of people gather in Hollywood to see the Oscars presented to outstanding actors, and others involved(参与) in the motion picture industry. Millions more watch on television.
It all began on May 16, 1929, when 270 men and women sat down to dinner at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. There was no secret about the winners. The names of the winners had been known for months. Janet Gaynor, for example, had won as Best Actress. Douglas Fairbanks presented her with the famous gold statue(塑像). The little statue was not then called Oscar. Like a new actor, Oscar was unknown. About six years later, it somehow got that renowned name. A number of explanations have been offered for its origin(由来), but nobody knows the true story for certain.
Nowadays the results of the Oscar voting are kept secretly. Only two people know the winners before the names are announced at the ceremony. The counting of votes is not done by one group of people but by different groups. Nobody except two members of an accounting company sees the final results.

Most people around the world are right-handed. This also seems to be true in history. In 1799, scientists studied works of art made at different times from 1,500 B.C. to the 1950s. Most of the people shown in these works are right-handed, so the scientists guessed that right-handedness has always been common through history. Today, only about 10% to 15% of the world’s population is left-handed.
Why are there more right-handed people than left-handed ones Scientists now know that a person’s two hands each have their own jobs. For most people, the hand is used to find things or hold things. The right hand is used to work with things. This is because of the different work of the two sides of the brain. The right side of the brain, which makes a person’s hands and eyes work together, controls the left hand. The left-side of the brain, which controls the right hand, is the centre for thinking and doing problems. These findings show that more artists should be left-handed, and studies have found that left-handedness is twice as common among artists as among people in other jobs.
No one really knows what makes a person become right-handed instead of left-handed. Scientists have found that almost 40% of the people become left-handed because their main brain is damaged when they are born. However, this doesn’t happen to everyone, so scientists guess there must be another reason why people become left-handed. One idea is that people usually get right-handed from their parents. If a person does not receive the gene(基因) for right-handedness, he / she may become either right-handed or left-handed according to the chance and the people they work or live with.
Though right-handedness is more common than left-handedness, people no longer think left-handed people are strange or unusual. A long time ago, left-handed children were made to use their right hands like other children, but today they don’t have to.
56. After studying works of art made at different times in history, the scientists found _______.
A. the art began from 1,500 B.C.
B. the works of art ended in the 1950s
C. most people shown in the works of art are right-handed
D. most people shown in the works of art are left-handed
57. How many people in the world are left-handed now
A. Less than one sixth. B. More than a half.
C. About 40%. D. The passage doesn’t tell us.
58. What is the hand for most people used to do
A. It’s used to find or hold things.
B. It’s used to work with things.
C. It’s used to make a person’s eyes work together.
D. It’s the centre for thinking and doing problems.
59. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true
A. No one really knows what makes a person become right-handed.

作文范文:
Nowadays, physical health has become a public concern especially among teenagers. Teenagers are encouraged to work out in order to be healthier. However, doubts are raised at the same time about the safety in exercising.
Positively speaking, exercising can definitely help to strengthen the body. Besides, it can relieve people from stress and bring relaxation to them. In addition, exercising also leads you to the fellows whom you may make friends with, which is good for your social association. By sticking to exercising, a strong mind will be fostered. In other words, it helps students to work harder in terms of study as well as their extracurricular work. .
Negatively speaking, potential danger still exists during the process of doing sports. News has been broadcasted that certain teenagers experienced sudden death during exercising. Obviously, over-exercising exceeds the physical capability of some teenagers, which may, to some extent, does harm to their health. What’s more, the improper way of doing certain sport also forms a potential threat to the safety of students. Therefore, we should look out when we are exercising.
To sum up, every coin has two sides. So does exercising. We should take both the advantages and disadvantages of it into consideration. Above all, take care, and stay healthy.
