Brian and Martha were classmates in their high school. While Brian was considered the most popular student because of his friendliness,Martha was not popular but she was a very smart student with high hopes for her future.Years later,Martha is a lawyer;however, she still has a problem with forming relationships.Though she is professionally sound, yet not many of her customers like her and she is still single. On the other hand,Brian is a happily married man and running his own business. He did not go to college but is happy and content with his life.Martha is intelligent, but her lack of EI is a hindrance to her being a popular lawyer while Brian, with an average IQ,is happy and successful in life because of his excellent EI skills.
Emotional Intelligence(EI),is a term that describes the ability to recognise, assess and manage one’s emotions and appropriately react to others.
Hiring the right person with the right skill is of concern for head hunters.Nowadays, the hiring process has become increasingly complicated(复杂的);companies not only focus on the hard skills(e.g.,technical skills, work experience and education)but also personality features.Qualities like stress management and assertiveness(自信心) skills are important factors in success.
Ever since the researchers found out that those with high EI are more successful, the importance of EI in the workplace has been accepted.Since the workplace includes groups of people with various ideas, higher EI is necessary to achieve goals.Good management of emotions improves the quality of our decisions.People with high EI are the best performers and have high levels of ability to create good relationships with others and thus are more satisfied at work.Emotionally balanced employees are self-confident,optimistic and good at managing disagreements and stress.

The village of Foston,North Yorkshire,UK,now has a post office thanks to pupils at the village primary school.
People in the village were saddened to see their local branch closed many years ago.
But now the village primary school has opened one in a converted(改造过的)outdoor toilet,a small brick building, with all the pupils at the school trained to help.
Teaching assistant Laura Glass,29,said,“The last one closed in 1998 and the nearest one is five miles away, meaning it was very tricky as the village has a lot of elderly people, and we suggested that the old toilet be used.
“We got a lot of help from the government and the villagers in converting it.We then realized that by getting pupils to run it we could help teach them important skills at the same time.
“The children will be properly supervised (察看并指导).They love it and it gives them key skills, and the villagers love it too because it is such a unique service.”
The post office opens daily during the pupils’ schooldays, for 15 minutes during their lunch break, and for another 15 minutes after lessons at 3:00 p.m.

My family has lived in my childhood home since I was two weeks old.Seventeen years later,as I got ready to leave for university,my parents decided that our charming little house was no longer the ideal place we lived and that it was time to move. And naturally,I panicked.
At first that we would leave my childhood home was gruesome. After all, this was the place where I used to run around with friends and where I would sit for hours staring out of the window, making up songs about the passersby. If we were to move, the new house wouldn’t be my home at all, just a strange, new place.
I’d come to terms with the idea of leaving childhood things behind, despite the fact that the decision to move wasn’t mine. And then it hit me:this was what the move was really about.I wasn’t concerned with losing my childhood bedroom,or having to take an extra bus to get to school. What was bothering me was that I’d be faced with a huge reminder that I’d soon be completely responsible for myself.
When I do go to university,I’ll go without a safe place to come home to.Of course,I’ll have my family’s love and support, but symbolically I’ll never be able to go home again.
As graduating high-school students,we’re all in love with the idea of going away and having wild adventures, provided we always have some place to return to.Leaving the family home behind is really just growing up without a safety net. It’s not a great change, but still nothing to smell. The move from one place in life to another is an important one.Because it’s true;you can never go home. Not really. But maybe, once you’ve had an adventure or two,you can go back for a nice visit.

How Room Designs Affect Our Work and Feelings
Architects have long had the feeling that the places we live in can affect our thoughts, feelings and behaviors. But now scientists are giving this feeling an empirical(经验的,实证的)basis. They are discovering how to design spaces that promote creativity, keep people focused and lead to relaxation.
Researches show that aspects of the physical environment can influence creativity. In 2007,Joan Meyers-Levy at the University of Minnesota, reported that the height of a room’s ceiling affects how people think. Her research indicates that higher ceilings encourage people to think more freely, which may lead them to make more abstract connections.Low ceilings,on the other hand, may inspire a more detailed outlook.
In additions to ceiling height, the view afforded by a building may influence an occupant’s ability to concentrate.Nancy Wells and her colleagues at Cornell University found in their study that kids who experienced the greatest increase in greenness as a result of a family move made the most gains on a standard test of attention.
Using nature to improve focus of attention ought to pay off academically, and it seems to,according to a study led by C.Kenneth Tanner, head of the School Design & Planning Laboratory at the University of Georgia.Tanner and his team found that students in classrooms with unblocked views of at least 50 feet outside the window had higher scores on tests of vocabulary, language arts and maths than did students whose classrooms primarily overlooked roads and parking lots.
Recent study on room lighting design suggests than dim light helps people to loosen up.If that is true generally, keeping the light low during dinner or at parties could increase relaxation.Researchers of Harvard Medical School also discovered that furniture with rounded edges could help visitors relax.
So far scientists have focused mainly on public buildings.“We have a very limited number of studies,so we’re almost looking at the problem through a straw,” architect David Allison says.“How do you take answers to very specific questions and make broad, generalized use of them? That’s what we’re all struggling with.”

Ⅳ.阅读理解
A
Internet users make up their minds about the quality of a website in the blink of an eye(眨眼的功夫),a study shows.
Researchers found that the brain makes decisions in just a 20th of a second of viewing a webpage. They were surprised as they believed it would take at least 10 times longer to form an opinion.
The study also suggests that first impressions have a lasting effect.
The Canadian team showed volunteers glimpses of websites, lasting for only 50 milliseconds. The volunteers then had to assess the websites in terms of their aesthetic appeal(美学吸引力).The researchers found that the quickly formed conclusions closely matched up to opinions of the websites that had been made after much longer periods of examination.
Gitte Lindgaard, lead researcher of the study expressed her surprise at the results.
“We believed it would be impossible to really see anything in less than 500 milliseconds,” she said.
The judgments were being formed almost as quickly as the eye can take in information.
The researchers believe that these quickly formed first impressions last because of what is known to psychologists as the “halo effect(光圈效应)”.If people believe a website looks good, then this positive quality will spread to other areas, such as the website’s content.Since people like to be right, they will continue to use the website that made a good first impression,as this will further confirm that their first decision was a good one.
As websites increasingly compete for business,Dr Lindgaard added that companies should take note.“Unless the first impression is favourable, visitors will be out of your site before they even know that you might be offering more than your competitors,” she warned.
1.How long did the researchers expect it would take to form an opinion about a webpage?
A.At least 0.005 seconds.
B.At least 0.5 seconds.
C.At least 2.5 seconds.
D.At least 1 second.
提示:推理判断题。根据文章第二段中“Researchers found that the brain makes decisions in just a 20th of a second of viewing a webpage.”可知,研究者预料要花一秒的二十分之一去看见网页,另外他们相信要花上多于十倍的时间来形成观点,即形成观点需花费的时间为一秒的二分之一,即0.5秒。
答案:B
2.The volunteers drew conclusions from the websites’ .?

The meaning of the word “volunteer” may be a little different in different countries, but it usually means “one who offers his or her services”.There are many different ways in which people can volunteer, such as taking care of sick people, working in homes for homeless children, and picking up garbage from beaches and parks.Volunteers may work within their own countries or in other countries. They are often people with a strong wish to help those who are less fortunate than themselves.Volunteers don’t expect any kind of pay.
At the root of volunteering is the idea that one person may have the ability to offer services that can help other people.Tracy,a good friend of mine, however, recently came back from India with a new idea of what being a volunteer means. She worked for two and a half weeks in one of Mother Teresa’s homes in Calcutta. The following is her story.
“I first heard about Mother Teresa in my high school. We watched a video about her work in India and all over the world.I was so moved by her spirit to help others and her endless love for every human being that after I graduated from high school,I too wanted to try her kind of work.So with two friends I flew to Calcutta for a few weeks.”
“I was asked to work in a home for sick people.I helped
wash clothes and sheets, and pass out lunch.I also fed the people who were too weak to feed themselves and tried to cheer them up.I felt it was better to share with them than to think that I have helped them.To be honest,I don’t think I was helping very much.It was then that I realized that I had not really come to help, but to learn about and experience another culture that helped improve my own understanding of life and the world.”
