Lewis Howard Latimer was an African-American scientist who made many important scientific discoveries.Latimer was born in Chelsea,Massachusetts,in 1848,to parents who were escaped slaves. At the age of 15,he joined the Union Navy during the Civil War.
After his military service in 1865,Latimer was employed as an office boy at the patent attorney office of Crosby and Gould in Boston, where he learned mechanical drawing. In 1876,Latimer was hired by Alexander Graham Bell to create the drawings necessary for a patent application for Bell’s new invention, the telephone.Latimer completed these drawings and rushed them to the patent office, where they arrived only a few hours before the drawings of a competitor. Thus,Bell secured the patent for the telephone.
While working for the US Electric Lighting Company,Latimer and his employers looked for a way to improve upon the incandescent(白炽的) light bulb that was being marketed by Thomas Edison.Edison’s light bulbs lasted only a few days.By inventing a cardboard envelope that surrounded the carbon filament(碳质灯丝)in the light bulb,Latimer was able to make light bulbs longer lasting and less expensive. As a result, many cities saw electrical lighting as a better and cleaner way to light their streets and homes.Cities like New York,London,Montreal, and Philadelphia set up this kind of lighting, and Latimer was sent out to plan and build the lighting systems.
In 1890,Latimer was hired by Thomas Edison at the Edison Electric Light Company. There he made more important discoveries and wrote a well-known book.He was the only African-American member of the Edison Pioneers,a group of men who practically created the electric industry.Latimer invented a bathroom compartment(卧车包房)for trains,a locking rack(行李架)for hats, coats and umbrellas, and a new improved book holder for bookshelves. He died in 1928.

The wisdom teeth are usually the last teeth to appear, and it often happens when people are in their late teens or early twenties.Wisdom teeth are growing at the back of the mouth, and can grow into place normally and never cause a problem. But often there is not enough room for them in the mouth. They might crowd the other teeth, and sometimes even push through the gums(牙龈).An impacted wisdom tooth(阻生智齿)is one that fails to make its way successfully through the gums.Wisdom teeth that only partly erupt can leave space for bacteria to enter around the tooth.
Experts say people should have their mouths examined between the ages of 16 and 20 for the placement of their wisdom teeth.Wisdom teeth show up clearly on X-rays,and experts say that removal is generally advised when they only partly break through the gums,or if there is a chance that the poor placement of the wisdom teeth will damage other teeth.Removal is also called for in cases where fluid(液体)collects around a wisdom teeth that is partly or fully below the gum.If removal is advised, the best time to do it is before the teeth cause any problems or pain.Young adulthood is usually the best time for wisdomteeth removal, since older patients more easily get infected before the operation.During the operation, patients are usually under general anesthesia(麻醉) so that they won’t feel any pain. They can also choose to just take a painkiller and remain awake;this choice will depend on the condition of the wisdom teeth and the number to be removed. After the operation, there can be swelling of the face and gums, and patients can feel some pain. Both can be treated with cold wraps, and medication given by the doctors.

Runners in a relay(接力)race pass a stick in one direction. However, merchants passed silk, gold, fruit, and glass along the Silk Road in more than one direction. They earned their living by travelling the famous Silk Road.
The Silk Road was not a simple trading network. It passed through thousands of cities and towns. It started from eastern China, across Central Asia and the Middle East, and ended in the Mediterranean Sea.It was used from about 200 BC to about 1300 AD,when sea travel offered new routes(路线).It was sometimes called the world’s longest highway. However, the Silk Road was made up of many routes, not one smooth path. They passed through what are now 18 countries. The routes crossed mountains and deserts and had many dangers of hot sun, deep snow and even battles.Only experienced traders could return safe.
The Silk Road got its name from its most prized product.Silk could be used like money to pay taxes or buy goods. But the traders carried more than just silk.Gold, silver, and glass from Europe were much found in the Middle East and Asia.Horses traded from other areas changed farming practices in China.Indian merchants traded salt and other valuable goods.Chinese merchants traded paper, which produced an immediate effect on the West.Apples travelled from central Asia to Rome. The Chinese had learned to graft(嫁接)different trees together to make new kinds of fruit. They passed this science on to others, including the Romans. The Romans used grafting to grow the apple.Trading along the Silk Road led to world-wide business 2,000 years before the World Wide Web.

About twenty years ago,I had the pleasure of teaching a disabled young woman. Not only was she good at maths and science, but she was also extremely talented in art.She could draw and paint beautifully. When Audrey graduated from university she got two degrees, one in fine arts and one in chemistry. Not too many people do well in two such different areas of study.
Just before her high school graduation,Audrey gave me a wonderful gift.It was a watercolour painting of a mother and her baby.A tear fell from the mother’s eye as she looked lovingly at her child.Beneath the painting,Audrey had written these words,“The deep love from Mother, through me,touches another.” What a beautiful gift!I had the piece of art framed(给……做框)and hung in my office.
Years passed with many moves from one office to another and I lost the painting.Last year, after about eight years of not knowing where it was,I received a phone call from a former colleague who said she had something of mine.It was the picture Audrey had painted for me 18 years earlier. When cleaning out a storage room she had discovered my gift.
I was struck that the precious gift came back.I knew Audrey very well. When she was four years old,Audrey had a serious disease. What’s worse, her father left the house. It was her mother who brought her up with much trouble. She survived the disease but was disabled.

After 21 years of marriage,my wife wanted me to take my mum out to dinner and a movie. My mother has been a widow for 19 years, but the demands of my work and my three children had made it possible to visit her only occasionally. That night I called to invite her to go out for dinner and a movie. My mother is the type of woman who believes that a late night call or a surprise invitation is a sign of bad news.“I thought that it would be pleasant to spend some time with you,” I responded. She thought about it for a moment, and then said,“I would like that very much.”
That Friday after work,as I drove over to pick her up,I was a bit nervous. When I arrived at her house,I noticed that she also seemed to be nervous about our date.We went to a restaurant that, although not elegant, was very nice and comfortable.During the dinner,we talked so much that we missed the movie.
A few days later,my mother died of a heart attack. Some time later,I received an envelope with a copy of a restaurant receipt from the same place my mother and I had dined. An attached note said,“I paid this bill in advance.I wasn’t sure that I could be there;nevertheless,I paid for two plates—one for you and the other for your wife. You will never know what that night meant for me.I love you, son.”
At that moment,I understood the importance of saying “I LOVE YOU” in time and giving our loved ones the time that they deserve.Nothing in life is more important than your family.Give them the time they deserve, because these things cannot be put off till “some other time”.

Why play games?Because they are fun,and a lot more besides.Following the rules...planning your next move...acting as a team member...these are all “game” ideas that you will come across throughout your life.
Think about some of the games you played as a young child, such as rope-jumping and hide-and-seek.Such games are entertaining and fun.But perhaps more importantly, they translate life into exciting dramas that teach children some of the basic rules they will be expected to follow the rest of their lives, such as taking turns and cooperating(合作).
Many children’s games have a practical side.Children around the world play games that prepare them for work they will do as grown-ups.For instance, some Saudi Arabian children play a game called bones, which sharpens the hand-eye coordination(协调)needed in hunting.
Many sports encourage national or local pride. The most famous games of all,the Olympic Games, bring athletes from around the world together to take part in friendly competition.People who watch the event wave flags, knowing that a gold medal is a win for an entire country, not just the athlete who earned it.For countries experiencing natural disasters or war,an Olympic win can mean so much.
Sports are also an event that unites people.Soccer is the most popular sport in the world.People on all continents play it—some for fun and some for a living.Nicolette Iribarne,a Californian soccer player, has discovered a way to spread hope through soccer. He created a foundation to provide poor children with not only soccer balls but also a promising future.
Next time you play your favourite game or sport, think about why you enjoy it,what skills are needed, and whether these skills will help you in other aspects of your life.
