The moon and its possible influence over human behaviours have been objects of tales for centuries. Although the full moon can’t turn people into werewolves(狼人),some people do blame it for causing a bad night's sleep or discomfort.
To find out if lunar phases(月相) affected humans, an international group of researchers studied children to see if their sleeping patterns changed or if there were any differences in their daily activities. The research studied a total of 5,812 children from five continents. Data collection took place over 28 months, representing 28 lunar cycles. These were then divided into three lunar phases : full moon, half-moon and new moon.
The findings of the study indicated that in general, sleep duration around full moon reported an average decrease of five minutes compared to new moon. “Our study provides evidence that the moon doesn’t seem to influence people’s behaviours,’’ said Dr Jean-Philippe Chaput from the Eastern Ontario Research Institute. The only significant finding was one percent sleep decrease in full moon. However, sleeping for five minutes less time during a full moon is not a danger to health. Our behaviours are largely influenced by many other factors like genes, education and income," he added.
"Folk tales and even certain examples suggest that behaviours of humans and animals are affected by lunar phases,” Dr Chaput explained. “Whether there is science behind it or not, the moon secret will continue to attract human civilisations in the years to come."
1.Where does the moon’s influence on human behaviours usually come from
A.Tales. B.Textbooks. C.News reports. D.Scientific papers.
2.What can be concluded from the findings
A.We should go to bed five minutes earlier during a full moon.
B.The moon is a major thing that affects our sleep and behaviours.
C.We shouldn’t worry about the moon’s influence over health.
D.The moon plays a significant role in children’s sleeping patterns.
3.How does Dr Chaput feel about the topic of the moon influence
A.it’s boring. B.It’s worrying. C.It’s frightening. D.It’s interesting.

Since moving to China to teach English two months ago, one noticeable difference I've found is how people break the ice in conversations. “Isn’t the weather nice today ” is a typical question and form of small talk commonly heard in daily life in the UK. More often than not, this question is said with a sarcastic(讽刺的) tone as it is rare to get good weather in Britain. As the winter quickly approaches and it gets colder in China, I have often found myself continuing my habit of commenting on the weather in day to day conversations with my new friends and students. But it occurs to me that perhaps this is a strange topic to talk about so often in daily conversation.
In contrast, something that I am yet to get used to is how people here in China have a tendency to begin conversations by asking questions like,“Have you eaten yet ” Some might mistake this type of question as an invitation to go for lunch but actually, this is more of a greeting used to express fond concern for the person you're talking to. It’s also a question which shows the importance of food in Chinese culture in terms of hospitality(好客), health and manners. Although it’s a question I’m still not used to being asked all the time, I think it’s a really pleasant way to start conversations because it shows you care about the person you're talking to.
Although these two ways to start conversations may be different, the one thing they have in common is that they involve topics that affect everybody on a daily basis. I'm not sure I'll be able to break the habit of talking about the weather, but I think I could definitely get used to talking more about food, especially as it's particularly delicious in China!
1.What's the obvious difference that the writer found between China and the UK
A.The diet habits of the people.
B.The topics that the people focus on.
C.The attitudes towards the new jobs.
D.The ways of beginning a conversation.
2.How does the writer feel now about talking about the weather so often
A.Fresh.
B.Unusual.
C.Nervous.
D.Common.
3.In China, when people ask you “Have you eaten yet ", they mean _______.
A.to invite you to have lunch
B.to talk about what you have eaten
C.to show fond concern for you
D.to show the importance of culture
4.What can we infer from the last paragraph
A.The writer likes Chinese food very much.
B.The writer has formed the habit of talking about the food.
C.The writer prefers saying food to talking about weather now.
D.The writer has broken the habit of talking about the weather.

Elon Musk says Space X is developing a plan for trips to Mars(火星) that will eventually cost just S 500,000 per seat. Musk founded Space X 10 years ago and space travel has always been one of his goals for the company. Few details were provided about the Martian voyage, but Musk did say we can expect to hear more about the plan in less than a year.
The price for a trip to Mars also highlights(突出) Musk’s main effort behind Space X, to bring down the cost of delivering a human into space. In an interview with the BBC, Musk admitted that the first, seats won't be selling for $ 500,000. It will take a while to get down to that price. But Musk says the half-million dollar ticket could happen a decade after trips begin. “Land on Mars,a roundtrip ticket—half a million dollars. It can be done,” he told the BBC.
Musk did say that one of the keys to low-cost trips to the red planet would be the ability to not only fuel there, but also to reuse the entire spaceship on the return trip. In the BBC interview Musk said by reusing the spaceship, you end up with the same sorts of costs airlines face. Musk compared it to flying today where a 747 isn't simply thrown away after a flight to London. Like the airplane, the cost of the spaceship could be spread out over many flights rather than just a single trip. The $ 500,000 price is around one percent of the cost NASA is now paying to send a person to the space station on a Russian rocket.
The talk of Martian travel came with Space X's most recent development news of its Dragon capsule. As the California company prepares to send a Dragon to the International Space Station next month, it completed the first crew trial with NASA. The event gave NASA astronauts a chance to test out the 7-seat capsule that is being developed to carry human passengers as well as goods.
1.According to the passage, Elon Musk ___________.
A.will go to Mars at the cost of $ 500,000
B.is the leader of the Space X company
C.is an American astronaut from NASA
D.will send people to Mars in less than a year
2.What makes the trip to Mars at such a low cost possible
A.Taking enough fuel.
B.Reusing the spaceship.
C.Using the airplane again.
D.Building the space station.
3.From the passage we can infer __________.
A.its Dragon capsule has taken the first passengers to Mars
B.NASA pays $ 5,000,000 for Russia to take one astronaut into space
C.the Dragon capsule is a spaceship made by NASA astronauts
D.Space X will use a Dragon capsule for passengers to make a trip to Mars
4.The main idea of the passage is _________.
A.the ticket to Mars will cost just $ 500,000
B.Space X is working together with NASA
C.the Dragon capsule is a cheap spaceship
D.the travel to Mars is becoming popular
D

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Did you grow up in one culture, your parents came from another, and you are now living in a totally different country If so, then you are a third-culture kid!
The term “third-culture kid” (or TCK) was coined in the 1960s by Dr. Ruth. She first came across this phenomenon when she researched North American children living in India. Caught between two cultures, they form their very own.①_______________About 90 percent of them have a university degree, while 40 percent pursue a postgraduate or doctor degree. They usually benefit from their intercultural experience, which helps them to grow into successful academics and professionals.
②_______________ In fact many hardships may arise from this phenomenon. A third-culture kid may not be able to adapt themselves completely to their new surroundings as expected. Instead, they may always remain an outsider in different host cultures.Max, for example, experienced this fundamental feeling of strangeness throughout his life as a third-culture kid.③_______________ While this can be a way to create a network of friends all around the world, it can be difficult for a third-culture kid like Max to maintain close friendships and relationships.
For a third-culture kid, it is often easier to move to a new foreign country than to return to their “home” country. After living in Australia and South Korea for many years, Louis finally returned to Turkey as a teenager. But she felt out of place when she returned to the country where she was born.④_______________ She did not share the same values as her friends’ even years after going back home.
While a third-culture kid must let go of their identity as foreigner when he/she returns, the home country can prove to be more foreign than anything he/she came across before. The peer group they face does not match the idealized image children have of “home”.⑤_______________
As a part of the growing “culture”, TCKs may find it a great challenge for them to feel at home in many places.
A.Yet being a third-culture kid is not always easy.
B.In general, they often reach excellent academic results.
C.This often makes it hard for them to form their own identity.
D.However, their parents can help them see the opportunities of a mobile lifestyle.
E.Their experience abroad helps them to gain a better understanding of cultural differences.
F.Unlike other teens of her age, she didn’t know anything about current TV shows or fashion trends.
G.Additionally, making new friends and saying goodbye to old ones will at some point become routine for a third-culture kid.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Growing up, my parents and elder brothers all smoked. Being a child of the 80s, it was normal for the adults to be smoking inside and during trips in the car. There just wasn't the same awareness of the dangers of second-hand smoke exposure that there is today.
I remember the day when I started smoking. I was 11. I was trying to impress one of the "bad boys" at school. I stole tobacco from my father and rather clumsily rolled a cigarette that I took to school with me. Smoking gave me a sense of autonomy and choice over my own life, and at 11 it was the ultimate act of rebellion. Soon I got addicted to it and was taking cigarettes from dad's packets on a regular basis. I knew he never started counting them until he had less than half a pack left.
After a while I got caught smoking at school. My parents struck a deal with me: if I stopped smoking at school, they would purchase more tobaccos for me to smoke at home. This was perhaps a misguided attempt to keep me out of trouble. I jumped at the idea, and simply got smarter about smoking at school.
I smoked right through my teens and early 20s, spending thousands of dollars on cigarettes, sacrificing food and other necessities to ensure I had cigarettes.
I tried many methods to quit, but each time I would go back to smoking. I have always had a love-hate relationship with cigarettes. On the one hand, they were a friend to me when I had no other, one constant in my life I could rely on. On the other hand, I despised(鄙视) being dependent on something that was going to kill me.
I grew concerned about the effect my smoking would have on my children and I felt guilty putting cigarettes over other things that could have benefited my family. It is with great shame that I admit that I continued smoking even after having a daughter born with cystic fibrosis(囊性纤维化). My daughter fights every day to breathe—and here I was intentionally causing damage to my lungs.
Paragraph 1 :
The turning point for me was an incredibly painful experience. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2 :
I set myself further little goals, such as only taking my e-cigarettes whenever I went. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

第二节
答案:
Paragraph 1:
The turning point for me was an incredibly painful experience. Last June a family member aged only 17, died after a long battle with cystic fibrosis. The cruel twist of fate robbed her of the life that she so richly deserved. Smoking for another five weeks after her death, I suddenly felt ashamed of myself and was overwhelmingly sorry for my daughter. I visited a doctor, who suggested me adopting electronic cigarettes as a substitute. I practiced over a couple of weeks and noticed the number of cigarettes decreasing.
Paragraph 2:
I set myself further little goals, such as only taking my e-cigarettes whenever I went. I made a record of every cigarette I had, and the associated triggers for that particular cigarette. The first day I counted 15 cigarettes, approximately half of what I usually smoked. By day 12, I was down to two. I had my last cigarette on July 14. After 20 years as a smoker, I was free from the addiction, finding the smell of cigarettes unbearable. To anyone wanting to quit, all I can say is give your plan a go! You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
