Scientist at University College London have discovered sets of regulatory genes, which are responsible for maintaining healthy hearing. The finding, made in fruit flies, could lead to treatments for age-related hearing loss(ARHL) in humans.
Globally, one-third of people aged over 65 experience hearing impairment, and while there are thought to be more than 150 genes that may affect hearing loss, there is no unified(统一的) view on how to use these to develop hearing loss treatments.
In the study, published in Scientific Reports, researchers are at the UCL Ear Institute assessed the hearing ability of the common fruit fly across its life span(around 70 days) to see if their hearing declines with age.
A fruit fly’s ears share many molecular(分子的) similarities with the ears of humans, making it an ideal tool for the study of human hearing loss.
Researchers found that the antennal ears of fruit flies also display ARHL with nearly all sensitive hearing measures starting to decline after 50 days of age. This made the researchers want to know if there were any “age-variable” genes in the flies’ inner ears which have kept the ears healthy for 50 days of their lives.
After closer examination, researchers identified a new set of regulatory genes-homeostasis genes. These genes are often responsible for picking up sound and the overall sensitivity of the ear. Using this information, scientists were then able to genetically modify(修改) the genes and prevent the flies from getting ARHL.
Professor Joerg Albert, lead author of the study, said: “While many studies have been conducted into the hearing function of fruit flies, ours is the first to look at the mechanistic and molecular detail of their auditory life course.”
“The fact that these genes are conserved in humans will also help to focus future clinical research in humans and thereby accelerate the discovery of new pharmacological or gene-therapeutic strategies.”

Many young people would like to make a booth(货摊)to do business on the street in the name of entrepreneurship (创业精神)and sell lemons. It might seem like an easy sell—kids offering cool drinks. Some entrepreneurs offer their tips on how to make money from this.
Joe Mansueto, founder of the investment company Momingstar, sold lemonade (柠檬汽水)as a kid. "You should always pay attention to customers," he said. "When somebody's walking down the street, get out from behind the booth, greet them, talk to them and just make friends with them to attract more customers."
However, his two sons decided to sell a different drink. When they were 8 and 10, his boys sold cocoa outside their home. "The great thing about business is that there are really no rules. You can be creative and try something different," said Mansueto.
But it wasn't enough for US representative Mike Quigley and his older brother to sell drinks. They sold old books at the booth and would rent them out for customers to read while they enjoyed their drinks.
Adam Ochstein, founder of StratEx Partners, a human resources service company, gave frequent visitors cards which were printed with a lemon. Every five drinks, customers got one card which allowed them to pay less than half of the next drink. However, they didn't price(给……定价)the drinks. "If you want to give nothing, give nothing. If you want to give $ 2, give $2.1 think we had let the adults give more money than they probably would like to." Today, he suggests kids use social media for marketing. He said, "It can tell people where the booth is going to be and what unique specials you're running."
(1).What is Paragraph 2 mainly about
A.How to set up a big company. B.How to attract more customers.
C.How to make friends with others. D.How to tell apart rich customers.

C.Taking advantage of social media. D.Allowing customers to pay less money.
(4).What is the best title for the text
A.Street business B.Marketing fashion C.Service culture D.Social activities

Learning Chinese could be one of the most important decisions you have ever made. Chinese is becoming the language to learn in the 21st century. With the world's largest population and a rapidly growing middle class, China stands to become the engine of the world's economy in the coming years. This will make learning Chinese very important for people in many industries (行业)or for those of us who wish to visit China or learn from its culture and history.
There is an ongoing effort to modernize the writing system and standardize the language. An increasing number of people learning Chinese are learning the Mandarin, so unless you absolutely need to learn another dialect (such as Cantonese), be sure you are studying Mandarin.
For native English speakers, Chinese is one of the most difficult and most different languages to learn. The vocabulary is wholly unfamiliar and unlike anything we know. In addition, in the Chinese tone (声调)system, words are spoken in rising or falling tones, which help to distinguish between them. Furthermore, there is the Chinese writing system—a collection of thousands of individual ideograms (表意文字)or symbols, which represent a word or an idea. These ideograms have no phonetic value—that is to say, we can't tell how the word is pronounced by how it is written. There is a method to present written Chinese in a phonetic script called pinyin. If you are learning Chinese, you'll be working with this pinyin system, but the beauty of the traditional writing system shouldn't be passed up (放弃). All these factors make learning Chinese difficult for us. Yet, for a determined learner, there's always a way to overcome it.
(1).Learning Chinese is becoming more and more important, because________.
A.Chinese engines are very welcome
B.China has the world's largest population
C.there are more and more rich people in China
D.China has become important to the world economy
(2).From the text we can learn that_______.
A.the author thinks Chinese is as difficult as English
B.the author is interested in the Chinese language and its culture
C.foreign languages can play a great role in industrial development
D.as long as the pinyin system is learned well, one can learn Chinese well
(3).The last paragraph mainly tells us about________.
A.the difficulties of learning Chinese B.the advantages of learning Chinese
C.the Chinese tone system D.the Chinese writing system
(4).What would be probably written following this text
A.The sources of Chinese characters. B.The importance of learning Chinese.
C.The advice on how to learn Chinese. D.The difficulties of learning other languages.

One Sunday morning, George Thomas, a baker in a small New England town, was waking through the town when he saw a young boy coming toward him, swinging(挥动)a bird cage in the air. On the bottom of the cage, there were three little wild birds shaking with cold and fear. George Thomas stopped the boy and asked him what he got.
The boy was happy and told him that there were just some old birds in the cage. When the baker asked him what he would do to the old birds. The boy said casually(漫不经心地)that he wanted to take the birds home and play with them. He would pull out their feathers to make them fight. He would have a really good time because he would enjoy watching these.
George Thomas was shocked by what the boy said. How could a boy be so rude to wild animals So he continued to ask the boy what he would do to the birds when he got tired of them, because he was such a naughty and cruel boy that he was sure to be tired of them sooner or later. The boy laughed and said that he got a cat, which liked birds, so he would give the birds to his cat. The baker got more worried and decided to help set free the poor birds. So he asked, "How much do you want for these birds, son "
The boy looked at him in surprise, wondering if the baker really wanted to buy them. He laughed and reminded the man that they were just plain old field birds. They didn't sing and they were not even pretty. However, the baker insisted and continued to ask him how much money he wanted for the birds.
The boy stared at the baker as if he were crazy and said,"$10 ”

Setting the cage down, he opened the door, and by softly tapping the bars persuaded the birds out, setting them free. The baker watched the birds flying in the sky, smiling. He took the empty bird cage home.
