A
Five years ago, my wife said she'd found us a tiny but adorable house. It was close to the historic Abbot Kinney. However, there was a bus depot (公共汽车停车场) across the street. Hundreds of buses noisily parked there every night and noisily left every morning. It was awful.
But I was determined to make the best of it. "It is noisy, but it offers us a good way to think about what is required to make a city work," I kept telling our 6-year-old daughter.
Then one morning, I woke up to find that the buses were gone! I allowed myself to get excited. My daughter, however, was unhappy. It took me a minute to understand: she had got used to the idea of us having a role in city life.
Shortly afterwards, a homeless encampment (临时营地) was built there. Then I found out what was planned for the bus depot—a place to deal with the homeless.
When I told my daughter about the "bridge housing", a big smile spread across her face. Her first reaction wasn't fear or selfishness. She understood instantly how special it was that the bus depot would become a place for people who needed just that to live.
What story about city life could I tell her then I tried to keep fruit in the car so that at traffic lights, we could hand out a banana or an apple. When a woman put up a tent on the sidewalk in front of our stairs, I filled all her water bottles.
Now we have a couple hundred new neighbours, and I'll be telling anyone who will listen what an honour it is to live among the homeless. Without my daughter, I might not have come to the same conclusion.
1.What was the drawback of the author's new house at the beginning
A.It was too small for family use. B.There was too much noise around.
C.It was too close to a tourist attraction. D.There were too many neighbours around.
2.Why was the author's daughter unhappy when she found the buses were gone
A.She thought she lost the role in city life. B.She didn't like the idea of "bridge housing".
C.She had been used to the presence of buses. D.She couldn't go out of town without the buses.
3.What was the author's purpose of keeping fruit in his car
A.To meet his family's needs, B.To make his daughter happy.
C.To help the homeless when possible. D.To thank those who had helped him.
B
The Blue Planet Ⅱ's latest episode focuses on how the plastic is having a destructive effect on the ocean and slowly poisoning our sea creatures. Researchers recently also found that sea creatures living in the deepest place on Earth, the Mariana Trench, have plastics in their stomachs. Indeed, oceans are drowned in plastics.
Though it seems that the world couldn't possibly function without plastics, plastics are a remarkably recent invention. The first plastic bags were introduced in the 1950s, the same decade when plastic packaging began gaining popularity in the United States. This growth has happened so fast that science is still catching up with the change. Plastics pollution research, for instance, is still a very early science.
We put all these plastics into the environment, but we still don't really know what the outcomes are going to be. What we do know, though, is disturbing. The ocean plastic is estimated to kill millions of marine animals every year. Nearly 700 species, including endangered ones, are known to have been affected by it. One in three leatherback turtles, which often mistake plastic bags for jellyfish, have been found with plastics in their bellies. Ninety percent of seabirds are now eating plastics on a regular basis. By 2050, that figure is expected to rise to 100 percent.
And it's not just wildlife that is threatened by the plastics in our seas. Humans are consuming plastics through the seafood we eat. I could understand why some people see the ocean plastic as a disaster, worth being mentioned in the same breath as climate change. But the ocean plastic is not as complicated as climate change. There are no ocean trash deniers(否认者), at least so far. To do something about it, we don't have to remake our planet energy system.
This is not a problem where we don't know what the solution is. We know how to pick up garbage. Anyone can do it. We know how to deal with it. We know how to recycle. We can all start by thinking twice before we use single-use plastic products. Things may seem ordinary, like using a reusable bottle or a reusable bag, but when taken collectively, these choices really do make a difference.
1. Why is plastic pollution research still a very early science
A. The plastics pollution research is too difficult.
B. Plastics have produced less pollution than coal.
C. Plastics have gained popularity too fast for science to catch up with.
D. The world couldn't possibly function without plastics.
2. How did the author support his opinion in Paragraph 3
A. By citing quotes from leading experts.
B. By making a comparison and contrast.
C. By listing examples from his own experience.
D. By presenting solid statistics.
3. What does the author intend to tell us in the last paragraph
A. We reap what we sow. B. The shortest answer is doing.
C. All things are difficult before they are easy. D. Actions speak louder than words.
4. What is the main idea of the passage
A. The oceans become choked with plastics.
B. The ocean plastic is a global issue.
C. The Blue Planet Ⅱ Has left viewers heartbroken.
D. Plastics gain popularity all over the world.
C
When the natural climate changes due to global warming, it can surely affect seals. The majority of them live in the Antarctic region so as the ice is melting, their natural habitat can be seriously affected. These changes don't take place overnight. They can be the result of many years of additional temperatures in the area. The seals then have to find ways to adapt.
Seals depend on the cool air currents to bring plenty of food for them. When the temperatures get higher, there is less and less food and the seal population starts to shrink. Mothers aren't healthy enough to feed their babies. Many of them end up abandoned as the mothers have to leave to find their own source of food.
The fact that their desire to produce young can be changed by the warmer temperatures is frightening too. It is also believed that the warmer temperatures can allow different diseases and viruses to attack the seals. This is a huge concern as they can rapidly wipe out huge numbers of seals out there.
However, these changes in climate and temperature aren't all bad for other species of seals. Scientists have found that those living in warmer climates are producing more young due to the changes. Research also shows that the females are moving further to find food and water. When they are out of the reach of the governing males, they are more willing to accept the moves of other males in the group.
This is good news too because it means that there will be more selection in the gene pool(基因库) for future generations. It can help the seals as a species adapt to change in their natural environment more easily.
The climate change problem for seals is directly linked to humans. When we take action to change what we let out into the environment, we will make positive changes for the seals. However, it is going to take a very long time to reverse(彻底改变) the effects of what has already been done.
1. What does the author regard climate changes for seals as
A. A double-edged sword.
B. An unavoidable disaster for existence.
C. A mirror of evolution.
D. A requirement for more choices in the gene pool.
2. What is the second paragraph mainly about
A. How global warming affects the seals. B. What seals feed their babies with.
C. Why the seal population grows. D. Where the seals find their food.
3. What will happen to the seals in warmer climates
A. Their number will be on the increase.
B. The female seals will be in the lead.
C. Their genes will change a great deal.
D. The females will keep away from the males.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. The Importance of Protecting Seals B. Seals' Adaptation to Climate Change
C. How Climate Change Affects Seals D. Why Are Seals Becoming Less and Less
D
Chocolate could soon be a thing of the past after scientists' warning that the cacao plant, from which chocolate is made, could be extinct within 32 years.
Over half of the world's chocolate comes from just two countries in West Africa—C te d'Ivoire and Ghana—where the temperature, rain, and humidity provide the perfect conditions for cacao to grow. But rising temperatures over the next three decades caused by climate change are expected to result in a loss of water from the ground, which scientists say could upset this balance.
According to the related data, a temperature rise of just 2.1 ℃ could spell an end for the chocolate industry worldwide by 2050. Farmers in the region are already considering moving cacao production areas thousands of feet uphill into mountainous areas—many of which are currently preserved for wildlife. But a move of this scale could destroy the ecosystems that are already under threat from illegal farming and deforestation.
One of the problems, according to Doug Hawkins, is that cacao farming methods have not changed for hundreds of years. "Unlike other tree crops that have benefited from the development of modern, high yielding strains and crop management techniques to realize their genetic potential, more than 90% of the global cacao crop is produced by small farms with unimproved planting materials," he said. "It means that we could be facing a chocolate decrease of 100,000 tons a year in the next few years."
Now scientists at the University of California, Berkeley have teamed up with American candy company Mars to keep chocolate on the menu. Using the controversial (有争议的) gene-editing technology known as CRISPR they are trying to develop a type of cacao plant capable of surviving in dryer, warmer climates. If the team's work on the cacao plant is successful, it could remove the need for farmers in West Africa to relocate to higher ground, and perhaps even allow cacao to be grown elsewhere in the world.
1.What do we know about chocolate from the text
A. Chocolate will disappear from the menu 30 years later.
B. Chocolate is mainly produced by African countries.
C. Chocolate will not be produced by 2050 because of climate change.
D. A new type of chocolate will be produced with the help of CRISPR.
2.What is the reason for the probable extinction of the cacao plant
A. The damaged ecosystems.
B. Water shortage caused by climate change.
C. The threat from illegal farming and deforestation.
D. The changeable farming method.
3.What is the writer's attitude to the application of CRISPR to develop a new type of cacao plant
A. Objective. B. Unconcerned. C. Supportive. D. Negative.
4.Where does the passage probably come from
A.A poster. B.A leaflet. C. An advertisement. D.A magazine.

The Girl and the Puma
This is a legend told and retold among the people of Argentina.
About five hundred years ago when the Spanish entered South America, native American tribes often fought back against the invaders. One way the tribes could put pressure on the Spanish was to surround their settlements. This is what happened in the early 1500's when Maldonado, a Spanish girl, was 15 years old.
Hostile native Americans of the Querandí tribe had encircled the Spanish settlement where Maldonado lived. Before long, their food supplies were depleted(耗尽). The people faced starvation. They begged their captain to allow them to take their chances and leave the settlement in search of food—but the captain would not allow.
Hungry, Maldonado escaped from the settlement and fled into the jungle. As night fell, she heard the alarm calls of wild animals. Where could she safely sleep for the night But there was one call that drew her closer. It was a cry of pain. She followed the sound to a cave where she found a puma(美洲狮) that had just given birth.
Maldonado helped the mother puma clean the cubs. Later, she watched the babies while the mother went out to hunt. And so days went by.
One day, while Maldonado was gathering food and the mother puma was inside the cave with her cubs, the girl was surprised by Querandí warriors. They captured her and brought her to their village. Fearing the worst, Maldonado braced herself for death she felt was certain to come.
But the Querandís were kind to the girl. They taught her tasks to help in their village, and she gladly took part.
One day, a band of Spaniards(西班牙人) attacked the Querandí village. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

My daughter, however, was unhappy. It took me a minute to understand: she had got used to the idea of us having a role in city life. 故选A项。
I tried to keep fruit in the car so that at traffic lights, we could hand out a banana or an apple.
根据第三段中的"kill millions of marine animals" "Nearly 700 species" "One in three leatherback turtles" "Ninety percent of seabirds"等可知,作者通过列数据来支撑自己的观点,故选择D项。
2.根据第二段的第二句“When the temperatures get higher, there is less and less food and the seal population starts to shrink.”
根据第四段中的“...those living in warmer climates are producing more young due to the changes.”
Over half of the world's chocolate comes from just two countries in West Africa-----C te d'Ivoire and Ghana-----where the temperature, rain, and humidity provide the perfect conditions for cacao to grow.
But rising temperatures over the next three decades caused by climate change are expected to result in a loss of water from the ground, which scientists say could upset this balance. According to the related data, a temperature rise of just 2.1 ℃ could spell an end for the chocolate industry worldwide by 2050.
If the team's work on the cacao plant is successful, it could remove the need for farmers in West Africa to relocate to higher ground, and perhaps even allow cacao to be grown elsewhere in the world.

Good morning, everyone!
I'm Li Hua, and very glad to be here to attend the international senior high students' environment protection forum to share my opinion on behalf of our school.
Nowadays, all kinds of pollution can be seen everywhere, which are threatening our health. Even worse, some rare animals and plants are on the verge of extinction due to severe destruction of the environment.
So it's time for us to take action! Many ways are available for us to adopt, such as saving every drop of water, taking a bus or public transportation instead of driving private cars, recycling plastic bags, refusing to use disposable chopsticks and so on.
Do your part and it can make a big difference!
第二节
答案:
One day, a band of Spaniards attacked the Querandí village. When they finally entered the village, they were surprised that the missing girl Maldonado, a Spanish girl who escaped from their settlement, had been living with the local tribes. Though she seemed to live happily here, she was forced to return home. The Spanish captain was angry that she had fled into the jungle without his permission.
He commanded that she should be tied to a tree and left there for wild animals to eat. As night fell, Maldonado heard the calls of wild animals, which came out to hunt for food. Feeling the worst, Maldonado stood there alone. Then the mother puma appeared, brought her food to eat and remained there to protect her. After several days, sad villagers came to the place where Maldonado had been tied to a tree. Much to their surprise, they found her alive. Nobody knew why.
