A
Countless people long to make a difference this holiday season, yet they don't realise that opportunities to make a difference are everywhere. Here are some ideas to get you started.
Organise a blank drive
It is cold outside, but imagine how thousands of homeless people may feel without a home of their own, or even a blanket to keep them from the cold. Organise a blank drive for your local homeless, and ask around for donations!
Practise random acts of kindness
I'll never forget the time when I went to pay for my Dr Pepper, but the server resisted, saying my bill was paid by an anonymous(匿名的) guest. It's this random act of kindness that restores my faith in humanity. Bless someone by paying for their drink at Starbucks, or praising them! If you live somewhere where it snows, shovel your neighbour's snow out of their driveway for them! Whether it is as simple as praise or as complex as paying the bill, you'll never know how far your impact will reach.
Say thank you
Just a simple thank you can make somebody's day, especially if they feel like their work is never noticed. Cultivate(培养) a smile on their face by being sincere and grateful for all that they do.
Use your talents to help the community
The best way to show your appreciation for people is by using the talents and skills you have to bless others. For me, I love to coordinate(协调) events and write, and so my way of reaching out to the community is through writing articles and creating awareness about problems we face today. If you can bake, make some delicious cookies for people to enjoy! If you can knit, put your talents to use by making clothes for children in foster care. Any talent can be used to help the community in meaningful ways.
Wish you a happy, healthy and helpful holiday season.

I love charity shops and so do lots of other people in Britain because you find quite a few of them on every high street. The charity shop is a British institution, selling everything from clothes to electric goods, all at very good prices. You can get things you won't find in the shops anymore. The thing I like best about them is that your money is going to a good cause and not into the pockets of profit-driven companies, and you are not damaging the planet, but finding a new home for unwanted goods.
The first charity shop in the modern form we know today was opened in 1947 by Oxfam. The famous charity's appeal to aid postwar Greece had been so successful that it had been flooded with donations. They decided to set up a shop to sell some of these donations to raise money for that appeal. Now there are over 7,000 charity shops in the UK. My favourite charity shop in my hometown is the Red Cross shop, where I always find children's books, all 10 or 20 pence each.
Most of the people working in the charity shops are volunteers, although there is often a manager who gets paid. Over 90% of the goods in the charity shops are donated by the public. Every morning you see bags of unwanted items outside the front of shops, although they don't encourage this, rather ask people to bring things in when the shop is open.
The shops have very low running costs: all profits go to charity work. Charity shops raise more than 110 million a year, funding(资助) medical research, overseas aid, supporting sick and poor children, homeless and disabled people, and much more. What better place to spend your money You get something special for a very good price and a good moral sense. You provide funds to a good cause and tread lightly on the environment.
1. The author loves the charity shop mainly because ofits _____.
A. convenient location B. great variety of goods
C. spirit of goodwill D. its nice shopping environment
2. The first charity shop in the UK was set up to _____.
A. sell cheap products B. deal with unwanted things

B. The staff are usually well paid.

4. Which of the following may be the best title for the passage
A. What to Buy at Charity Shops
B. Charity Shop: Its Origin & Development
C. Charity Shop: Where You Buy to Donate
D. The Public's Concern about Charity Shops

Amber has a degree in business management and economics. She put her skills to good use when she spent eleven months in Cambodia through World Hope International as a volunteer working with a local microfinance(小额信贷) company to help the poor get financial services.
Amber's first few weeks in Cambodia were busy and difficult as she tried to learn the language, understand the culture, and get used to her new surroundings. Her volunteer service involved working with a local micro-finance company. In addition to writing plans, preparing international marketing materials, and building donor(捐赠人) relations, Amber met with company clients. During these visits she learned how the small loans they received transformed their lives. She learned first-hand the benefits of micro-finance, which by providing farmers and small-business owners with affordable working capital (such as money to buy a sewing machine) helped them to earn their way out of poverty.
"It never stopped amazing me when a client would show me a new home that was built because of a loan he received or the way a client's business had improved and thus allowed his children to be sent to school," Amber said.
Amber recalled that one client called Paul walked her all around his house, pointing to what he had done with each of the eight loans he'd received. He explained how every loan had improved his family's quality of life. Amber said he was one of the hardest working men she had ever met. He had suffered greatly in the Cambodian Civil War and became disabled, but not once did he let it kill his dreams of realising a better life for his family. His latest purchaser sound system that he rented out for weddings and other parties doubled his income.
Amber said, "Living and working in Cambodia helped me see the world in new ways and made me aware of the hardship and suffering that many people around the world face every day. Those eleven months were some of the most meaningful months of my life."

D
The morning after an evening struggle to care for my three-year-old daughter, I couldn't wait to get her to school. I, as a mother, was tired of the anger and her inability to communicate because of her abnormal language development.
As I accompanied her into the car, I was in deep despair. Nothing was right with our world. She'd been born around the same time when the nation was witnessing the birth of another Great Recession. My job and my house had been victims. Then this happened. Since my child's language delay was identified, I had been pessimistic but doctors struggled to properly help her. I felt as if we both needed to be rescued.
I returned that afternoon as disenchanted with the little girl I loved as when I left. Walking slowly toward the school's playground gate, I found her preschool teacher racing to greet me.
"Madame, you should have seen her today!" His breathy words were supported by excitement. I didn't interrupt. "See that climber." He pointed to a wooden piece of playground equipment that looked like a rock wall. I nodded. "Well, every day since she started school, she's tried and failed to make it to the top." He took a breath. "And today she did it!"
He expressed his joy just as he'd seen her conquering Mount Everest! "She cheered and celebrated! I wish I'd recorded it!" His words comforted me. My daughter had conquered her mountain.
As she ran toward me, I recognized something I hadn't before. I saw her perseverance(毅力). I saw her strength. I saw a hero.

Danger at Scituate Lighthouse
Rebecca stood by her father, looking out of the windows of Scituate Lighthouse. Low sand dunes(沙丘) with sea grass topped the Massachusetts beach. There were no clouds in the sky—nothing at all to give warning of the danger that was sailing towards them.
"Now, Rebecca," Mr Bates began, gazing out across the open sea, "I want you and Abigail to help your mother and take care of things while I go to town for food and supplies. I won't be gone long."
"We'll help," Rebecca promised.
"I know I can count on you."
Still, Mr Bates looked a little worried about leaving the lighthouse. After all, peace between the US and the UK had not yet been declared, even though the war of 1812 was nearly over. Although English warships used to frequently attack towns along the coast—including Scituate—no English soldiers had been sighted for a long time. Besides, Rebecca thought as she watched her father set off, the family would soon starve if he didn't go for food.
Her father hadn't been gone long when Rebecca happened to look out of the window at the ocean. What she saw nearly made her heart stop. It was an enemy ship: a small, light-gunned British warship. Calling for her mother, she grabbed her father's telescope and could just make out the name painted on the side: La Hogue.
Rebecca, Abigail, and their mother stood together, frightened, as they watched the ship sail closer. Mother told the girls to watch the ship while she tried to sound the alarm and warn the home guard in the nearby village. The girls watched helplessly as the great ship drew near. Two small boats were lowered off the side, and Rebecca knew the boats would come ashore quickly.
It was time to run. As they ran down the lighthouse stairs, Rebecca suddenly stopped when she saw her fife(横笛). Oh, yes! She thought. It just might work…Rebecca grabbed the fife and the drum that Abigail had been learning to play.

第二节
答案:
Paragraph 1:
She and her sister hurried out of the lighthouse and over to the large sand dunes that lay behind it. They hid themselves among the trees. Peering through the trees, they saw the boats coming closer and closer. Taking a deep breath, Rebecca held her sister's trembling hand and handed her the drum. "We've got to play 'Yankee Doodle'. You know the home guard always marches to a drum and fife. Let's make the British soldiers believe our troops are coming to fight." Abigail nodded. Her face was white, but she gripped her drumsticks firmly. The lively rhythm of "Yankee Doodle" soon filled the air.
Paragraph 2:
The English soldiers looked nervously at one another —the music of "Yankee Doodle" had to be coming from the confident American soldiers. They hesitated and slowed down the boats. The captain listened tensely, fearing that if his men landed on the beach, they would be walking into a trap, so he fired as a retreat signal. The sailors quickly turned the rowboats around. When the home guard arrived, they were amazed to find the La Hogue had already set sail. They congratulated Rebecca on her quick thinking to trick the British into leaving. Rebecca and Abigail's bravery and lively music had defeated the enemy...without a single shot having been fired.
