第一部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分50分)
第一节 (共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
Five years ago, my wife said she'd found us a tiny but adorable house. It was close to the historic Abbot Kinney. However, there was a bus depot (公共汽车停车场) across the street. Hundreds of buses noisily parked there every night and noisily left every morning. It was awful.
But I was determined to make the best of it. "It is noisy, but it offers us a good way to think about what is required to make a city work," I kept telling our 6-year-old daughter.
Then one morning, I woke up to find that the buses were gone! I allowed myself to get excited. My daughter, however, was unhappy. It took me a minute to understand: she had got used to the idea of us having a role in city life.
Shortly afterwards, a homeless encampment (临时营地) was built there. Then I found out what was planned for the bus depot—a place to deal with the homeless.
When I told my daughter about the "bridge housing", a big smile spread across her face. Her first reaction wasn't fear or selfishness. She understood instantly how special it was that the bus depot would become a place for people who needed just that to live.
What story about city life could I tell her then I tried to keep fruit in the car so that at traffic lights, we could hand out a banana or an apple. When a woman put up a tent on the sidewalk in front of our stairs, I filled all her water bottles.
Now we have a couple hundred new neighbours, and I'll be telling anyone who will listen what an honour it is to live among the homeless. Without my daughter, I might not have come to the same conclusion.
1.What was the drawback of the author's new house at the beginning
A.It was too small for family use. B.There was too much noise around.
C.It was too close to a tourist attraction. D.There were too many neighbours around.
2.Why was the author's daughter unhappy when she found the buses were gone
A.She thought she lost the role in city life. B.She didn't like the idea of "bridge housing".
C.She had been used to the presence of buses. D.She couldn't go out of town without the buses.
3.What was the author's purpose of keeping fruit in his car
A.To meet his family's needs, B.To make his daughter happy.
C.To help the homeless when possible. D.To thank those who had helped him.
B
I just got back from an extraordinary trip to the Arctic North of Norway, and I felt excited and alarmed at the same time. I knew before I went there that the Arctic was the centre of global warming, but seeing the changes first-hand is haunting.
There is one scene I will never forget. It came just a few days into the trip. I was on board the ship National Geographic Endeavor, and was halfway between the Arctic Circle and the North Pole. I had never been so far north or in a more remote place on Earth. But I was in good company. The Aspen Institute had invited 100 politicians, scientists, businessmen, religious and labor leaders to see the impacts of global warming with their own eyes.
One day, we had the electrifying experience of watching polar bears play on the ice. We tend to think of the Arctic as an expanse of white, but it isn't. The sea is dark. The pack ice comes in deep, beguiling blues. Polar bears are yellowish. And all of these colors pop against a steely grey sky.
On one ice sheet, we saw two polar bears, their furs covered with red from a just completed dinner. One was moving in and out of the water; the other was busy eating the seal. Off to the side, a smaller bear peaked over the ice with its black snout(鼻子), waiting for the big ones to get off the kill so it could go over to the remains. All three bears seemed powerful and vibrant.
But later, we sailed passing an island where a polar bear sat on the shore, stranded because the sea ice had receded so far from shore. This bear will not eat until next winter—it simply cannot hunt without the ice. Polar bears can survive for long stretches without eating, but seeing that lone bear brought home just how dependent these iconic creatures are on sea ice. Scandinavians, after all, call them the Ice Bear.
I have read enough climate reports to know that with summer sea ice disappearing at alarming rates, the bear I saw stranded that day is one of many. Now I have a permanent memory of what a hungry, stranded bear looks like.

A. To do some research on global warming.
B. To witness the influence of global warming.
C. To experience the beautiful sight of global warming.
D. To see the various animals face to face.
4. What did the two bears they saw look like

For several years, Paul Watson, a Canadian environmentalist, and his crew have been very busy with a campaign every winter to find and stop Japanese ships that hunt whales in the name of research. Watson is the captain of a ship called the Steve Irwin. He and his crew work very hard to save endangered sea creatures. Many kinds of large whales were greatly reduced in numbers before an official order to stop commercial whaling was made in 1986. And although some kinds of whales have shown great recovery since then, others like the Northern Right Whale remain seriously endangered.
In February 2009, the sea captain noted, "For twelve hours our ship, the Steve Irwin, has been on the tail of the Japanese whale killing factory ship the Nisshin Maru. Every hour has brought us closer to this monstrous killing machine, this industrialized whale-killing place." The Japanese have continued killing whales over the last 20 years in the name of "scientific" whaling. Watson states that research is not the actual intention. Some say that the whale meat ends up on food store shelves.
Disagreements between the Steve Irwin and the whaling ships have resulted in two collisions(碰撞) serious enough to make the headlines. The whaling ships have been accused of using something illegal that produces loud waves. These made Watson's crew members feel dizzy and lose their sense of direction and may have caused ear and eye damage. Watson's crew also used powerful water cannons(高压水枪) against the Japanese whalers. In response, the Japanese have accused the Steve Irwin of causing the ships to hit each other.
The behavior of people on both sides of the problem has been dangerous and caused a lot of disagreements. The question that needs to be asked is whether violence against illegal whaling operations is reasonable and right.
1. Why is Watson so busy every winter
A. To carry out research on whales.
B. To keep an eye on Japanese ships.
C. To prevent whales from being caught.
D. To organize campaigns to protect the environment.
2. What can we know about the Nisshin Maru
A. It intended to hunt whales for meat.
B. It had met with some sea monsters.
C. It took whales alive for scientific research.
D. It was following the Steve Irwin all the time.
3. What do the collisions show
A. Laws need to be changed.
B. Both sides are acting outside of the law.
C. The Japanese are worse than Watson's crew.
D. The Steve Irwin crew should act in a non-violent manner.
4. What is the text mainly about
A. A great environmentalist Paul Watson.
B. Serious Japanese environmental problems.
C. The Japanese whaling ship: the Nisshin Maru.
D. The anti-whaling efforts of the Steve Irwin crew.
D
Like colorful corals, they rocked gently in the ocean current. Only these were not beautiful natural reefs grown over centuries. They were plastic bags, stuck to the Aegean Sea floor since a waste site slid into the water.
A team of divers and environmentalists pulled thousands of plastic bags from the water near Greece's Andros Island this month. The workers described what they found as "a gulf Ml of plastic corals".
Seas polluted with plastic have become one of the most shocking signs of human damage to the planet. "It was a very scary thing to see," said Arabella Ross, a volunteer diver with Aegean Rebreath. The group carries out underwater and coastal clean-ups. "It really shook me and I think it really shook everyone who saw it," she added.
"The Mediterranean is among the seas with the highest levels of plastic pollution in the world," the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) said in a report. Greece produces about 700,000 tons of plastic waste a year, or about 68 kilos per person. About 11,500 tons enter its seas every year. Almost 70% of that returns to the Greek coast, one of the longest in the world. The sea pollution off Andros is thought to date back to 2011, when heavy rain caused a waste site to collapse. Most of the waste fell into the sea.
Aegean Rebreath divers removed blue, black and yellow plastic bags caught between reefs and among fish. "It was like the paradise of the Caribbean Sea, where you find coral reefs everywhere of every color. It was the exact same thing, but instead of corals it was bags," diver Arabella Ross said.
The team managed to remove only a small part of the plastic waste they found. They also pulled up 300 kilograms of old fishing traps—known as "ghost nets"—from Andros. In a separate operation in June off Salamina, a small island near Athens, they removed two tons.
"If people are wondering where their rubbish ends up, we see it each time we go into the water," Ross said.
1. What does the underlined word "it"(Para. 3) most probably refer to
A. The Aegean Sea. B. Plastic pollution.
C. The volunteer group. D. The waste site.
2. What is believed to be the start of the pollution off Andros
A. Collapse of a waste site. B. Extremely bad weather.
C. Waste thrown away by tourists. D. Plastic waste produced by the Greeks.
3. Where does the rubbish finally end up according to Rose
A. The oceans. B. In the fields.
C. In the rubbish sites. D. The waste treatment factories.
4. What could be the best title for the passage
A. Gulf of Plastic Corals' found in Aegean Sea
B. The paradise lies in the Caribbean Sea
C. Coral reefs are full of every color
D. Water pollution is very serious

Jack and his wife Tonya were sailing around Africa with their friends Max and Sasha. One day they saw a big fishing boat. It was moving fast.
"Hello!" they shouted. The men on the boat looked at them angrily. Max looked carefully at the boat.
"Something is wrong with their fishing net," he said. They got nearer to the net.
"What's that " said Tonya. "There is something in the net. It's alive."
Very slowly they moved nearer.
"I can see it now," said Tonya. "It's a killer whale—it's hurt. There's blood in the water. How can we help it "
"I can see it too. It's a baby but we must be careful," said Max.
Jack jumped into the water. "I can get the net off its fin (鳍)," he said.
Jack got the net off the baby killer whale. There was a big cut on its fin. It swam away. Suddenly there were other killer whales near the boat.
"Jack!" shouted Tonya. "Get on quickly." Jack swam to the boat as fast as a fish. "That baby killer whale…I am going to call it Lucky," he said.
As they moved away, it began to rain harder and harder.
Jack said, "We must get away from the wind. I can see a town over there. Let's go."
The town got nearer but the waves got bigger. Suddenly a very big wave hit the boat. "Is everyone OK " shouted Jack.
"Tonya She's not in the boat," said Sasha. "She's in the water!"
They looked into the cold, dark water for hours. "Tonya! Say something, Tonya! Where are you " shouted Max.

"Jack, do you want us all to die " said Max. "We can't do any more. Tonya is wearing a life jacket (救生衣) and she can swim very well. Let's sail to the town."
Moments later the boat hit a beach. They got off. Max and Sasha slept on the beach. Jack sat near the water, looking at the sea and thinking about Tonya.
