A Room of One's Own
This essay by English writer Virginia Woolf is based on her several lectures given to two women's colleges at Cambridge University in 1928. In it, Woolf describes that it's circumstance not talent alone that allows men to be more successful at writing. Women, in other words, spend so much time cooking, cleaning, and tending to their children that they have no time left for art. To write well, therefore, a woman must have "a room of her own". While on its surface, this essay appears to be only about writing, it is actually about wealth and class, freedom and imprisonment, and the power struggle between sexes.
The Art of War
Written by ancient Chinese military strategist Sun Zi, The Art of War is widely considered to be one of the best books about military strategy(军事战略) in human history. Consisting of 13 chapters, each dealing with a separate aspect about how to fight a war, the book has been translated into many languages and has thousands of editions. For centuries, it has been used to train military leaders for its detailed study of military strategy and effective leadership.
Letter to My Daughter
This book of essays and poems by Maya Angelou, a respectable American poet, is written for "the daughter she never had"—the millions of women, both young and old, who she considers to be her "family". From the viewpoint of a caring, older relative, this book contains lessons selected from her own life experiences, including the birth of her only child, a son, as well as the development and loss of friendship.
A Brief History of Time
If you're short on time, then why not read about, well, the creation of time This book, first published in 1998 from brilliant scientist and mathematician Stephen Hawking, explores mind-bending questions about the creation of the universe, including if and when it will end, and if so, how. J. K. Rowling, the Harry Potter's author, has signed a deal with Little Brown Company to publish her first ever novel for adults, which is set to become one of the most anticipated (被期待的) books in years.
The deal means that Rowling's long-standing relationship with Bloomsbury, the London-based publisher that launched(发行) the Harry Potter books, has come to an end, at least in terms of new works by the author.
Rowling is keeping her fans guessing about the characters and plot of her new book. She only said that the new novel will be nothing like the Harry Potter series, which was sold over 30 million copies in the UK alone. She thought that with the move from children's to adult fiction, a switch to a new publisher seemed like a natural and reasonable step.
She said, "Although I've enjoyed writing it every bit as much, this book will be very different from the Harry Potter series. The freedom to explore a new field is a gift that Harry's success has brought me."
Ian Rankin, the Edinburgh-based author whose highly-successful detective novels are also set in the city, suggested Rowling's book will be a crime novel.
"Wouldn't it be funny if J. K. Rowling's first novel for adults turned out to be a crime story set in Edinburgh " he said.
Industry insiders guessed that the deal is worth more than 5 million and the new book is expected to come out later this year.
A spokesman said, "J, K. Rowling's audience is vast and her position is unique. Harry Potter books were a global success and her fans are very loyal. Children that were eight, nine, or ten when the books first came out in the 1990s are now in their 20s. Plenty of adults, loved the books regardless of whether they had children, so the potential market for her is huge."
1.What does the text mainly tell us
A.J. K. Rowling has signed a deal with a new publisher.
B. K. Rowling's new book will be more successful than her Harry Potter series.
C.J. K. Rowling has to switch to a new publisher in order to publish her new book.
D.J. K. Rowling's first book for adults will be published later this year.
2.J. K. Rowling's new book for adults _________.
A.has been sold 30 million copies in the UK alone
B.is poorly thought of by the London-based publisher Bloomsbury
C.has nothing in common with the Harry Potter series
D.is expected to bring her more money than the Harry Potter series
3.We can learn from the text that ________.
A.Little Brown Company is specialized in publishing adult books
B.the author has no doubt about the success of Rowling's new book
C. K. Rowling will be a crime novelist as good as Ian Rankin
D.it was in Edinburgh that Ian Rankin got to know J. K. Rowling
4.What the spokesman said in the last paragraph tells us that _________.
A.J. K. Rowling's fans are so loyal that they don't care what she will write
B.children won't have any interest in J. K. Rowling's new book
C.Rowling's vast audience and unique position will guarantee the new book's success
D.only readers of Harry Potter series will be interested in Rowling's new book

For the past five years, Paula Smith, a historian of science, has devoted herself to re-creating long-forgotten techniques. While doing research for her new book, she came across a 16th-century French manuscript(手稿) consisting of nearly 1,000 sets of instructions, covering subjects from tool making to finding the best sand.
The author's intention remains as mysterious(神秘) as his name; he may have been simply taking notes for his own records. But Smith was struck mainly by the fact that she didn't truly grasp any of the skills the author described. "You simply can't get an understanding of that handwork by reading about it," she says.
Though Smith did get her hands on the best sand, doing things the old-fashioned way isn't just about playing around with French mud. Reconstructing the work of the craftsmen (工匠) who lived centuries ago can reveal how they viewed the world, what objects filled their homes, and what went on in the workshops that produced them. It can even help solve present-day problems; In 2015, scientists discovered that a 10th-century English medicine for eye problems could kill a drug-resistant virus.
The work has also brought insights for museums, Smith says. One must know how an object was made in order to preserve it. What's more, reconstructions might be the only way to know what treasures looked like before time wore them down. Scholars have seen this idea in practice with ancient Greek and Roman statues. These sculptures were painted a rainbow of striking colours. We can't appreciate these kinds of details without seeing works of art as they originally appeared—something Smith believes you can do only when you have a road map.
Smith has put the manuscript's ideas into practice. Her final goal is to link the worlds of art and science back together. She believes that bringing the old recipes to life can help develop a kind of learning that highlights experimentation, teamwork, and problem solving.
Back when science—then called "the new philosophy"—took shape, academics looked to craftsmen for help in understanding the natural world. Microscopes and telescopes were invented by way of artistic tinkering(修补), as craftsmen experimented with glass to better bend light.
If we can rediscover the values of hands-on experience and craftwork, Smith says, we can marry the best of our modem insights with the handiness of our ancestors.
1.How did Smith feel after reading the French manuscript
A.Confused about the technical terms. B.Impressed with its detailed instructions.
C.Discouraged by its complex structure. D.Shocked for her own lack of hand skills.
2.According to Smith, the reconstruction work is done mainly to _________.
A.restore old workshops B.understand the craftsmen
C.improve visual effects D.inspire the philosophers
3.Why does the author mention museums
A.To reveal the beauty of ancient objects. B.To present the findings of old science.
C.To highlight the importance of antiques. D.To emphasise the values of hand skills.
4.Which would be the best title for this passage
A.Craftsmen Set the Trends for Artists B.Craftsmanship Leads to New Theories
C.Craftsmanship Makes Better Scientists D.Craftsmen Reshape the Future of Science

Missus Sommers one day found herself the unexpected owner of fifteen dollars. It seemed to her a very large amount of money. For a day or two she walked around in a dreamy state as she thought about her choices. Her daughter Janie was wearing worn shoes and needed new ones. She would buy cloth for new shirts for the boys. Her daughter Mag should have another dress. And still there would be enough left for new stockings for her children. The idea about how to spend the dollars made her restless with excitement.
On the day she planned to go shopping with the money, she ate a light meal—no! Between getting the children fed and the house cleaned, and preparing herself to go shopping, she forgot to eat at all!
When she arrived at the large department store, she spotted a pile of silk stockings at the entrance. A sign nearby announced that they had been reduced in price. A young girl behind the counter asked her if she wished to examine the silky leg coverings. She smiled as if she had been asked to inspect diamond jewelry, and started to feel the soft, expensive items. Missus Sommers picked up a black pair and looked at them closely. Two red marks suddenly showed on her pale face. She looked up at the shop girl and said proudly, "Well, I will buy this pair."
Missus Sommers changed her cotton stockings for the new silk ones in the ladies' rest area. She had let herself be controlled by some machine-like force that directed her actions and freed her of responsibility. How good was the touch of the silk on her skin! Then she put her shoes back on and put her old stockings into her bag. Next, she went to the shoe department, where she tried on a pair of new boots. Her foot and ankle looked lovely. She could not believe that they were a part of herself.
Paragraph 1:
After buying a pair of new boots, she walked into the clothing department. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
She was about to leave the store when a kid running around reminded her of something. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

答案:written; connections; is documented; Various; arose ; actively; when; a; its; on/upon
arise是不及物动词,根据时间状语"at the end of the Tang Dynasty"可知本句用一般过去时。
a great deal of意为"大量的,许多的",是固定搭配,修饰不可数名词,故填a。
的",故填its。

Dear David,
I'm glad that you're interested in the fantastic live webcast of our Chinese Poetry Contest held from 7 pm to 9 pm on July 10th.
The contest is aimed to arouse students' passion for traditional Chinese poetry and help them better appreciate its beauty. The contestants, all of whom were winners of class poetry contests, were required to recite as many ancient Chinese poems related to a given subject as possible. Whoever recited the most was the school champion. The contest, from which students benefited a lot, was well received by the whole school.
Best wishes!
Yours,

第二节
答案:
Paragraph 1:
After buying a pair of new boots, she walked into the clothing ing to a dressing mirror, looking at herself in the mirror. "Won't I look more beautiful if my shoes match a perfect dress on my body " thought Missus Sommers. Waving to the salesgirl of the department, she asked her whether she could try on the fashionable dress styles. With her request approved, Missus Sommers kept trying on. One dress after another, she put them into her shopping cart fondly.
Paragraph 2:
She was about to leave the store when a kid running around reminded her of something. "Oh, my God! I forgot all about my kids!" yelled Missus Sommers, starting to blame herself. "Excuse me, salesgirl, would you be so kind as to let me put back all I had chosen, for I had intended to buy my daughter Janie a new pair of shoes, boys' new shirts and all of them new stockings I must have lost my head!" A sense of responsibility of caring about her kids drove her to think of the right idea where the money should go.
