It would be great to have a long, healthy and happy life, and that’s why scientists are seeking out what we need to do to achieve longevity.
We all know that regular exercise is good for us. In recent years we’ve been told to aim to walk 10,000 steps a day to remain healthy, although other advice to do three 10-minute walks a day is thought to be even more effective. But according to scientists, the speed at which people walk in their 40s is a sign of how much their brains, as well as their bodies, are ageing.
The BBC’s Philippa Roxby writes that tests on 1,000 people from New Zealand born in the 1970s found that slower walkers tended to show signs of "fast ageing". Their lungs, teeth and immune(免疫的) systems are in worse shape than those who walk faster. The study found not only did slower walkers' bodies age more quickly, their faces looked older and they had smaller brains. Professor Terrie E Moffitt, lead author of the study, told the BBC: "it found that a slow walk is a problem sign years before old age."
So, what’s the point of knowing that a slower walking pace might mean a smaller brain Well, researchers say measuring walking speed at a younger age, and understanding what this might mean, could be a way of testing treatments to slow human ageing. This might help us make lifestyle changes while we’re still young and healthy. This also suggests even in early life, there are signs showing which people will go on to have a healthier life.

Satellites are important part of our daily lives. For example, the information for weather forecasts is sent by satellite. Some satellites have cameras which take photographs of the Earth to show how clouds are moving. Satellites are also used to connect our international phone calls.
Computer connections of the World Wide Web and Internet also use satellites. Many of our TV programs come to US through satellites. Airplane pilots also sometimes use a satellite to help them find their exact location.
We use satellites to send television pictures from one part of the world to another. They are usually 35, 990 kilometers above the equator (赤道). Sometimes we can see a satellite in the sky and it seems to stay in the same place. This is because it is moving around the world at 11, 000 kilometers an hour—exactly the same speed that the earth rotates (旋转). A satellite must orbit () the Earth with its antennae (天线) facing the earth. Sometimes, it moves away from its orbit. So there are little rockets on it which are used to put the satellite back in the right position. This usually happens about every five or six days.
Space is not empty! Every week, more and more satellites are sent into space to orbit the Earth. A satellite usually works for about 10-12 years. Satellites which are broken are sometimes repaired by astronauts or sometimes brought back to9 Earth to be repaired. Often, very old or broken satellites are left in space to orbit the Earth for a very long time. This is very serious because some satellites use nuclear power and they can crash into each other.
1. Why does the satellite move around the world at the same speed as the Earth rotates
A. In order to take photographs B. In order to stay in a certain position in the orbit. C. In order to move away from its orbit. D. In order to send television pictures.

Few people can stop themselves from looking at pictures of cute animals. Take the Internet sensation(引起轰动的人或物)Sally chicken as an example. The chicken with a yellow body and a flat mouth always looks lovely. Seeing her cute pictures cheers people up. But there’s another benefit of cuteness.
New research has found that looking at cute pictures of animals can also help us concentrate(专注)better. The study comes from researchers at Hiroshima University in Japan. They invited 132 university students to take part in some experiments. In one experiment, students were asked to find a given number from a list of numbers within a time limit. They performed the given tasks twice—before and after looking at seven pictures of either baby cats and baby dogs, or cats and dogs. Researchers were surprised to find that students who were shown cute baby animal pictures made fewer mistakes.
However, baby animals look both “cuter” and more“pleasant”than adult animals. What if the test difference came from their being “pleasant” To find the answer, the researchers chose some food pictures which looked pleasant but not cute, and gave them to another group of students. But seeing the foods did not make the students perform any better in the number test. This finding suggests that seeing cute pictures makes students behave more deliberately and perform tasks with greater time and care.
The “power of cuteness” could be of great use. Think about situations in which people need to act carefully: driving, office work and exams. “In my first year of high school, I brought small plastic toys to school during tests. I would set them up in a row on my desk, facing me, and then get busy answering exam questions,”Susana Martinez-Conde wrote in Scientific American.

Mark Twain is someone Americans are taught to love. Older relatives, English teachers and the media always praise (表扬) him. But when you actually take the time to read The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, you find that his work is more wonderful than you could ever imagine.
The novel describes a young boy named Tom Sawyer growing up in a small town along the Mississippi River. He explores the countryside on a riverboat with his friends, falls in love with girls, starts secret clubs and searches for treasure. Twain’s idea of childhood is magical – a time of imagination, wonder and, of course, adventure.
More importantly, through the eyes of Tom Sawyer, Twain cleverly makes fun of US culture. For example, Tom hates going to church, and Twain uses scenes of Tom there to mock religion and its old traditions.
Twain’s writing is full of these kinds of critical (批判的) points about culture and politics. That’s why he is so loved in the US – he wasn’t afraid to state his opinions, and he did so clearly.
He also believed strongly in women’s right to vote in elections and gave a famous speech on the subject, called “Votes for Women”, in 1901.

Once again, I was in a new school. So was a girl in my class named Paris. That's where the similarities ended.
I was tall and she was small. I was one of the oldest in the class while she was the young. My hair was thick, short and ugly while hers was long and beautiful. I was awkward and shy. She wasn't. I couldn't stand her, considering her my enemy. But She wanted to be friends.
One day, she invited me over and I said yes — I was too shocked to say no. Actually, no one had invited me over to play before. But this girl who wore the latest fashions, wanted to see me.
She lived on the fourth floor in a two-room place with her mother, her stepfather, her two brothers and her sister. When we got to the room she shared with her sister, she took out a big case of Barbies — which was my next surprise. I would have thought she had outgrown them. I had never played with them. But we sat on the floor of a walk-in closet, laughing as we made up crazy stories about the Barbies. That's when we found out that we both wanted to be writers when we were older and we both had wild imaginations.
We had a great time that afternoon. Our jaws(下巴) ached from smiling so much. She showed me her outfits, which had mostly come from a designer clothing store down the block. The woman who owned it used her as a model sometimes for her newspaper ads and gave her clothes in exchange.
Paris charmed the whole neighborhood. The bookstore owners lent her fashion magazines, the movie theater gave her free passes and the pizza place let her have free pieces. Soon I was included in her magic world. We slept over at each other's houses, spent every free moment together. My dark hair grew out and I learned to love being tall.
Paris, my first real friend since childhood, helped me get through my tough teenage years and taught me an amazing and very surprising thing about making friends: your “worst enemy” can turn out to be your best friend.
1. At the time described at the beginning of the article, ________. A. the author felt she half little in common with Paris B. the author envied (嫉妒) Paris for being confident. C. the author felt she was in every way inferior (不如) to Paris D. the author stayed away from Paris because of their differences

I came to study in the United States a year ago. Yet, I did not know the real American society until I was injured(受伤) in a car accident because after the car accident I had to see a doctor-and go to court (庭). After the accident, my roommate called a doctor for me. I was very grateful and determined to repay him one day. But the next day, he asked me to pay him $200 for what he had done. I was astonished. He had good reason to charge me, he said. And if I wanted to collect money from the person who was responsible for my injury, I'd have to have a good lawyer. And only a good doctor can help me get a good lawyer. Now that he had help me find a good doctor, it was only fair that I should pay him.
But every time I want to see doctor, I had to wait about 50 minutes. He would see two or three patients at the same time, and often stop treating one so as to see another. Yet he charged me $115 each time. The final examination report consisted of ten lines and it cost me $215.
My lawyer was all smiles the first time we met. But after that he avoided seeing me at all. He knew very well the other party was responsible for the accident, yet he hardly did anything. He simply waited to collect his money. He was so irresponsible that I decided to dismiss(解雇) him. And he made me pay him $770.
Now I had to act as my own lawyer. Due to my inexperience, I told the insurance (保险) company the date I was leaving American. Knowing that, they played for time and I left without getting a cent.
My experience taught me two things about America: firstly, in a country like America money is everything. It is more important than friendship, honor or professional morality (道德). Secondly, foreigners are still being treated unfairly. So when we talk about America, we should see both its good and bad sides.

For children, the first day of school is their first step into a new world. This important day can be made special by planning some interesting activities. For example, you can ask each of the students to introduce themselves in a unique way. Appreciate (欣赏) the good ideas that the children have for describing themselves.
It’s also a good idea to organize “silent learning”. In this activity, you need to supply paper and color to each of your students. Ask them to draw anything they like. To make it special, you can ask them to draw something in particular. To make it interesting, you can give it the name of a human emotion (情感) and ask them to describe it in their own words.
Also you can tell your students everything about the school. You can tell them some of your experiences in this school. You can write down your experiences and that can be made up into an interesting story. You can take this chance to encourage the children to take part in all the school activities. You can make use of this chance to help the students get rid of (消除) their little fears about the new school. You can give the students a chance to ask questions and share their views.
Getting the students together to decorate (装饰) the classroom is also a good activity for the first day of school. You can join them in this activity and help them. Let the students come up with ideas for decorating the classroom; allow them to use their imagination in the decoration and make the classroom look nice.
All the above activities for the first day of school can make the students feel comfortable in the new school and give them some moments that they will remember for long years.

In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is helpful for it social progress and richness. Others say that competition is bad; that it sets one person against another leads to unfriendly relationship between people.
I have taught many children who held the belief –worth came from how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death affairs. Sadly, they forgot to develop many other human qualities.
However, while some seem to wish to succeed, others think quite opposite. They, especially young people have suffered have suffered from competitive stress from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often find that they choose to fail. They seem to choose failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: “ I may have lost, but it doesn’t matter because I really didn’t try.” In fact, they are worried that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean they were worth nothing.
Clearly, this belief is the same as that of true competitors who try to prove their self-worth. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one’s self-worth come from how well one performs in comparison(比较) with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. I suggest they can discover a new meaning in competition only when such worries and fear begin to disappear.

Recently researchers studied social media users ranging from 10 to 15 years old. They found that they can be divided into four personality types. They are either a “geek (极客)”, an “internet celebrity (网红)”, a “lurker (潜伏者)” or a “victim (受害者)” on social media. Each personality types has both positive and negative sides. Which one do you fall into
Victims
Victims lack (缺乏) knowledge to keep themselves safe online. To avoid being a victim, do not share the location of your home. Thieves may break into your home if they know you are not there.
Geeks
Geeks are active social media users who care about their privacy (隐私). They often post creative works online, using unreal names. A movie tells a man who is comfortable in his online life, but finds life in the real world to be much more difficult to deal with. This can remind “geeks” to try to avoid becoming addicted (上瘾的) to the Internet and take part in more face-to-face communication.
Internet celebrities
Internet celebrities like sharing as well, but they make more appearance than geeks. They may become famous for their singing or dancing. Many of them share almost everything in their lives in order to attract more fans. Teenage celebrities might spend less time studying and more time online, making them fall behind in study.
Lurkers
Most teenagers probably fall into the type – “lurkers”, or people who are neither too active nor visible. You probably have friends who prefer to “like” and share links (), rather than create their own content online. The problem for these teenagers is that they may find it difficult to express themselves. But at least they make sure to protect their privacy.
All in all, whichever type you belong to, remember that never spend too much time on the Internet. Go to find your friends and family members instead.
Find your __________ personality type
There are four types of personality types on the Internet, which one do you belong to
Victims Victims don’t know how to keep themselves safe from _____________. If you share the location of your home, thieves may know ______ you are.
Geeks Geeks play an active part on the Internet and ______ about their privacy. The movie reminds “geeks” to _________ in some face-to-face activies, or they will become addicted to the Internet.
Internet celebrities This kind of people like to be ________ by others because of their songs or dances. If you are a teenage celebrity when you spend more time online showing yourself, what you do will ________ your study.
Lurkers Lurkers would rather more links than __________ their own content online. As a lurker, it is ______ for a teenager to express himself although he can keep himself safe online.
No matter which type you are, talk with friends and parents ________ of spending lots of time online.
