Many students ask for advice about how to improve their English. Here are three basic questions.
The first question is about understanding English films and songs. Li Hao from Hubei wrote,“ I like watching English films and listening to English songs, but I don’t understand very much. What can I do ”
Watching films and listening to songs are great ways to learn English! Watch and listen several times, and guess the meaning of new words. Each time you will learn something new. I also advise you to talk about the films or songs with your friends.
The second question is about speaking. Wang Fan from Jilin wrote, “our school has a teacher from the US. I am shy and I am afraid to speak to her. What should I do ”
You can say, “Hello! How are you ” “ Do you like China ” These are good ways to start a conversation. And before you begin, you should smile at her! Remember this: Do not be shy. Just try.
The third question is about vocabulary. Zhang Lei from Anhui wrote, “ I write down new words, but I forget them quickly. How can I remember them
Do not worry. It is natural to forget new words! I suggest you write four or five words a day on pieces of paper and place them in your room. Read the words when you see them, and try to use them.

1.Many students ask for advice about how to improve their English.

ask sb. for sth “请求某人给予…；向某人征求…”

1）ask for意为“请求（给予）”
2）advice on/about sth. 有关……的建议
He gave me a piece of advice on how to learn maths.

3）how to improve their English 为“疑问词+动词不定式（短语）”结构，作about的宾语。
Do you know how to use the camera 你知道怎样使用这台照相机吗？We can’t decide what to do next.我们不能决定下一步要做什么。
疑问词how，what，who等后可接动词不定式（短语）,在句中know/teach/understand/decide等动词或about等介词的宾语。
2. Watching films and listening to songs are great ways to learn English! 看电影和听歌曲是学习英语很好的方式！
单个的动名词（短语）作主语时，谓语动词用单数形式。
watching films和listening to songs是动名词短语，在句子中作主语。
Running is a good sport. 跑步是一项很好的运动。
两个或两个以上的动名词（短语）作主语时，谓语动词通常用复数形式。
Swimming and playing basketball are my favourite sports.游泳和打篮球是我最喜欢的运动。
3. Each time you will learn something new.每一遍你都会学到新东西。
Something,anything,nothing,somebody, anybody等不定代词被形容词、动词不定式修饰时，形容词或动词不定式要放在它们之后，作后置定语。
形容词new 作后置定语修饰不定代词 something 意为“某些的新东西"。
I want to read something interesting.我想读些有趣的东西。
She has something to tell you.她有一些事情要告诉你。
4. I also advise you to talk about the films or songs with your friends我还建议你和朋友们谈谈（所看的）电影或（所听的）歌曲。
advise此处用作及物动词，意为“向…提出意见；忠告；建议”。
advise sb. (not) to do sth. 意为“建议某人（不要）做某事”。
Miss Li advised us to go to bed early and get up early.李老师建议我们早睡早起。
I advised her not to drive. 我建议她不要开车。
advise的名词形式advice意为“建议；意见”为不可数名词。
Could you give me some advice 你能给我提些建议吗？
5. I suggest you write four or five words a day on pieces of paper and place them in your room.我建议你每天把四五个单词写在纸片上，并把它们放在你的间里。
suggest及物动词，此处意为“建议；提议”，主要用法有：
1）suggest sth.意为“建议某事”
I suggest a visit. 我提议去参观。
2）suggest doing sth.意为“建议做某事”
He suggested going home. 他建议回家。
3）suggest+ that从句（从句应用虚拟语气,即谓语用 “should+动词原形”, should可以省略）。
I suggest (that) we (should)hold a meeting. 我建议我们开个会。
[拓展]suggestion可数名词，有复数形式，意为“建议；提议“,
advice是不可数名词，没有复数，前面也不能加冠词。
