The other day I came across a few local musicians and happened to hear them talking:
“I hate all the terrible pianos in this town.I hate that rubbish they play on the radio. They can’t even understand a bit of music.”
“I’m never playing in that club again.Too many drunks and nobody listens to us.”
But one younger musician said,“There are a few clubs that book my band a few nights a month, and I’m trying to find other places to play.I’m also looking forward to booking a few summer festivals this year.”
It’s said that you are the average of the five people whom you spend the most time with,or to put it another way,you are who your friends are.
Attitudes are important.Whether they’re positive (积极的) or negative, they’re rubbing off on you.If you’re always around people who complain about lack of work and about other musicians or blame (责怪) others, and you play the role of victim (受害者),chances are that you will start to as well.So it’s time to take a look at the people you call “friends”,as what kind of friends you have determines what kind of life you are going to live.
This is an easy exercise: Make a list of the people who you often hang out with, and simply stop spending time with the negative people on your list.Set a new standard (标准) for yourself and don’t become friends with people who fall below that standard.
Keep successful people around you and your own chances for success will be much better.Ask them how they do it and learn from them.Ask if they will help you get the work you’re looking for,or maybe give you some advice to help you on your career path.

The British policemen have several nicknames, but the most frequently used are “copper” and “bobby”.The first name comes from the verb “ cop” meaning “ to take” or “capture”,and the second comes from the first name of Sir Robert Peel,a 19th century politician, who was the founder of the police force. An early nickname for the policemen was “peeler”,but this name has died out.
Visitors to England seem, nearly always,to be very impressed by the English police. In fact,it has become a joke that the visitors to Britain, when asked for his views of the country, will always say,at some point or other,“ I think your policemen are wonderful.”

Nine years ago, after Leo had died, people said to me,“I never knew he was your stepfather.” You see,I never called him that.At first,he was no one special in my life. Then he became my friend. In time,I felt he was my father too.
Leo married my mother when I was 11; two years later we moved into a house in a new suburban development. At first, our lawn was just a mud pile with a few untidy clumps of grass, but Leo saw bright possibilities.“Your mother wants flowers; she can plant them here, where there’s lots of sun,” he said,“We’ll plant trees over there,to give us shade. And in the backyard,I’d like a barbecue.” Then he smiled.“After so many years of apartment living, now we can have cookouts.”
For years Leo had lived in an apartment by himself, and now he was putting down roots in the suburbs. At first our split-level house resembled all the others, but then it began to change.Little touches― my mother’s flower garden,Leo’s trees― made our house unique.More important,a real family was forming within this house, with its own special traditions.Leo was becoming a full-time parent, and I was learning what it meant to have a father.
Weekday mornings when the weather was bad,Leo often drove me to school.Having a father drop you off may have been something my classmates took for granted, but I always thought it was wonderful.Saturday mornings,we went to the hardware store, then browsed in the five-and-ten,buying a sports magazine for my brother and something for me.
Some people might think that doing errands together is nothing special, but I,who had previously spent my childhood watching other families do these everyday activities, savored them now with intense delight.Looking back,I realize that Leo gave me what I needed most― the experience of doing ordinary things together as a family.
One day,we learned that my “real” father—who hadn’t seen or supported my brother or me for more than five years—wanted to see us again,on a regular basis. We remembered too well the early years we had spent with him.He had been angry and cruel, violent and unloving.Since my brother was then 17 years old,he didn’t have to follow family-court stipulations. But because I was still a “minor”,I had to meet with the judge.
When Leo,my mother, and I entered the courtroom,my “real” father was already present.I avoided his glance and told the judge I was part of a new family now,and that Leo taught me how to make things, took me to the movies, and helped me with my homework.I said I didn’t want to see my “real” father anymore because he had never shown any love for me or even much attention.
The judge looked at Leo.“How are things going ” he asked.
“They couldn’t be better,” Leo answered.“I’m a lucky man to have such a family.”
My “real” father’s visitation request was denied that day; he was out of my life, and I was deeply relieved.I also knew Leo had become my dearest friend.
Aren’t the best parents also good friends to their children, accepting them without reservation and telling them they can be counted on Stepfamilies aren’t bound by traditional ties,so the love and friendship they develop is extremely precious. Was Leo “perfect” He’d deny it if I said so.And that’s one reason why he was so “perfect” to me.
Sometimes, during the first years my new family lived together,I’d look out my bedroom window on warm summer nights and see Leo and my mother in front of our house.Together they’d walk.My parents,I would think.I actually have two parents.
Soon after we moved to the suburbs, one of our new neighbors introduced herself to me.She had already met my mother and Leo.“You know,” she remarked,“you look just like your father.”
I knew she was just making conversation― but even so...
“Thank you,” I said.

从第六段...who hadn’t seen or supported my brother or me for more than five years可知,我的亲身父亲已经有五年多没供养我们了。所以A项正确。
58.B 词义猜测题。从该句前后的the hardware store...buying...

A.Avoid (避免) asking your child too many questions
B.Tell your child stories about your growing up
C.Don’t judge or criticize your child
D.Listen to your kids with respect
E.Provide pressure-free conversation opportunities
F.Ask children gently what they think
If your child has gone from a continuous (连续不断的) chatterbox to making conversations that consist mostly of yes and no,it’s time to consider these tips on how to talk to kids,so you’ll know what’s going on in your child’s world.
61.
The quickest way to get kids to shut up and,as a result, shut you out of their lives is to continuously press them about things.A more effective way is to sit back and patiently wait for them to open up in a low-stress family and then be prepared to listen.
62.
Parents can sometimes make kids at a young age decide it is best not to talk about something when they are criticized. If you really want to know what’s on your child’s mind, then avoid passing judgment (判断) and focus instead on why something seems important to your child.
63.
If you want to raise a creative (有创造力的) and independent thinker, stop telling your child what he ought to feel or think. You can gently encourage additional conversations by simply asking why he feels the way he does or what he would do in a certain situation.
64.
You may think you’re just asking questions out of curiosity when communicating with your child, but an endless stream of questions about what they did, whether everyone got along,if they went to the bathroom, etc.,are enough to make anyone shut up! Practice patience and let your kids open up on their terms.
65.
Kids can relate to you and other adults when you tell your stories happening when you were their age.Talking to kids by telling them about things like something embarrassing that happened or the first crush (迷恋) you had helps them to connect with you and understand that you might actually know what they are going through!
