When I was a little girl, I remembered that when my dad was repairing something, he would ask me to hold the hammer, so we would have time for a conversation with each other. I never saw my dad drinking or taking a night out. All he did after work was taking care of his family.
I grew up and left home for college and since then, my dad had been calling me every Sunday morning. And when I bought a house several years later, my dad painted it by himself in the fierce summer heat. All he asked was to talk to him, but I was too busy in those days. Four years ago, my dad visited me. He spent many hours putting together a swing for my daughter. He asked me to have a talk with him, but I had to prepare for a trip that weekend.
One Sunday morning we had a telephone talk as usual. I noticed that my dad had forgotten some things that we discussed lately. I was in a hurry, so our conversation was short. Several hours later that day I received a call. My father was in the hospital. Immediately, I bought a plane ticket and on my way I was thinking about all the occasions I missed to have a talk with my dad. By the time I arrived at the hospital, my father had passed away. Now it was he who did not have time for a conversation with me. I realized how little I knew about my dad, his deepest thoughts and his dreams.
After his death I learned much more about him and even more about myself. All he ever wanted was my time. And now he has all my attention every single day.

Larks are most likely to be healthy, wealthy and wise, according to an old saying.
But those who are early to go to bed and early to rise do not always have the upper hand, researchers say. They have found that night owls are generally brighter and wealthier than those who are able to get up early in the morning.
Experts from the University of Madrid carried out tests on around 1, 000 teenagers and found that those who preferred to stay up late proved the kind of intelligence associated with honored jobs and higher incomes. “Larks” or “morning people”, however, often acquired better exam results, possibly because lessons are held at the wrong time of a day for night owls. The researchers examined the habits and body clocks of the youngsters to determine whether the liked to stay up late and sleep in later in the morning, or preferred to go to bed early and were at their peak in the morning. School performance and inductive intelligence, or problem solving, were measured and academic grades in the major subjects were also taken into account. The results showed that evening types scored higher than morning types on inductive reasoning, which has been shown to be a good estimate of general intelligence and a strong indicator of academic performance. They also had a greater capacity to think conceptually as well as analytically. Such abilities have been linked to innovative thinking, more admired occupations and better incomes.
Famous night owls include President Trump, Obama, Charles Darwin. Winston Churchill. Keith Richards and Elvis Presley. George W. Bush, who is regularly in bed by 10 p.m., Thomas Edison Napoleon, Condoleezza Rice, who wakes at 4: 30 a.m., and Ernest Hemingway are among those known as larks. Jim Horne, a professor of psychophysiology at Loughborough University, said, “Evening types tend to be the more active and creative types, the poets, artists and inventors, while the morning types are the deduces(推断者), as are often seen with civil servants and accountants.” A previous study of US Air Force recruits found that evening types were much better at thinking to solve problems than larks.
8. What does the word “lark” mean in the text
A. A bird of prey that flies in the morning.
B. A bird of prey that is a symbol of wisdom.
C. A kind of person who goes to bed early and wakes up early.
D. A kind of person who has honored jobs and higher incomes.
9. What characteristics do night owls have
A. Night owls are much healthier, wealthier and wiser.
B. Night owls are not good at inductive reasoning.
C. Night owls stay up late and wake up early in the morning.
D. Night owls are expert in analyzing and innovative thinking.
10. From the passage, we can infer that ________.
A. the early bird will catch the worm
B. morning types have a tendency to do some creative jobs
C. night owls can do better in the examinations if lessons are held in the right time
D. President Trump, Winston Churchill and George W. Bush are models of night owls
11. According to the writer, what kind of job is an evening type likely to do in the future

If you ask people to name the one person who had the greatest effect on the English language, you will get answers like “Shakespeare,” “Samuel Johnson,” and “Webster,” but none of these men had any effect at all compared to a man who didn’t even speak English—William the Conqueror.
Before 1066, in the land we now call Great Britain lived peoples belonging to two major language groups. In the west-central region lived the Welsh, who spoke a Celtic language, and in the north lived the Scotch, whose language, though not the same as the Welsh, was also Celtic. In the rest of the country lived the Saxons, actually a mixture of Anglos, Saxons, and other Germanic and Nordic people, who spoke what we now call Anglo-Saxon (or Old English), a Germanic language. If this state of affairs had lasted, English today would be
close to German.
But this state of affairs did not last. In 1066, the Normans led by William defeated the Saxons and began their rule over England. For about a century, French became the official language of England while Old English became the language of peasants. As a result, English words of politics and the law come from French rather than German. In some cases, modern English even shows a distinction(区别)between upper-class French and lower-class Anglo-Saxon in its words. We even have different words for some foods, meat in particular, depending on whether it is still out in the fields or at home ready to be cooked which shows the fact that the Saxon peasants were doing the farming, while the upper-class Normans were doing most of the eating.
When Americans visit Europe for the first time they usually find Germany more “foreign” than France because the German they see on signs and advertisements seems much more different from English than French does. Few realize that the English language is actually a Germanic language in its beginning and that the French influences are all the result of one man’s ambition.
12. Before 1066, people in Britain mainly spoke ________.
A. Welsh and Scottish
B. Celtic and Old English
C. Anglo-Saxon and Germanic
D. Celtic and Germanic
13. How did William the Conqueror have a great effect on English
A. By defeating the Saxons.
B. By speaking good English.
C. By teaching people in Britain to speak English.
D. By bringing French to Britain to greatly influence English.
14. Why do Americans feel France is less foreign than Germany
A. There are more similarities between English and French.
B. They know little of the English history.
C. In France most of the advertisements appear in English.
D. They know French better than German.
15. What is the main idea of this passage
A. The history of Great Britain.
B. The French effects on the English language.
C. The difference between English and French.
D. The great people who had effect on English.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
The main benefit you get from studying abroad is independence. I feel great to know that you can manage on your own when necessary. This ability gives you more freedom as well as tolerance. After moving abroad you have to start a totally new life. Settling in a new environment is a big challenge for you, but you have to keep in mind that it is only as mall part of studying abroad, and experiences like these can help you build your character and understand the world better.
When I went abroad I knew that I had to find a job and learn to handle my money myself. I did not have a choice. I had to manage on my own. I found a job as a mail carrier for the local newspaper. Not all my co-students were as lucky as me in finding a job right away. You have to keep in mind that besides working you have to attend lectures and do your homework. Carrying mail was not always an easy job, but thanks to it, I got to know many nice people and saw the town and local people from a different view.
Besides looking for a job, I also had to find a place to live in and take care of everyday chores from cooking to doing laundry. When you have only begun with your independent life, this can be quite a challenge. You don’t have experience, nor does anyone give a helping hand—you’re on your own. So it might happen that the first potato you fry ending up darker than intended, but from that time on you can only do better.
All the trials you go through increase your independence, teach you a lesson and give you a wonderful experience to manage in difficult situations in the future. Learning in a new environment and taking full responsibility for yourself make your time abroad quite extraordinary.
