China's 40-year-long process of reform and opening up meant foreign influences gaining a foothold in the country. But now, the process can also be viewed in the opposite way. The outside world is opening up as a receptacle for Chinese culture. Where once it was all a matter of Chinese people fascinated by Hollywood movies, a new “soft power” trend is taking Chinese pop music, TV series and novels to appreciative audiences abroad.
Englishwoman Hollie Sowden and American Nora Wilson developed a website called “Written Chinese” with a Chinese woman named Chamcen Liu. The website provides a dictionary and other Mandarin learning tools. Wilson says, “In the beginning, it was just a Facebook page where we posted characters, their meanings and example sentences. That page expanded like crazy, with nearly 280,000 followers. That's why we decided to develop a dictionary app and then the website.”
Sowden and Wilson aren't the only expatriates(侨民)eager to tap world interest in China.
Years ago, groups formed in the US to provide English subtitles for popular Chinese TV dramas. There are also websites translating Chinese novels, especially fantasy series. Wuxiaworld and Gravity Tales are two examples, with tens of thousands of followers on their Facebook pages.
Chinese music, too, is walking through the open door that once was a one-way street. MelodyC2E is a student club at Shanghai International Studies University, which is trying to spread Chinese pop songs to the world. It now has around 300,000 subscribers. The inspiration was rooted in 2016, when Pan Jianghao heard a youth envoy (公使) for the United Nations said that the world wanted to hear more from Chinese young people. Motivated by his words, Pan and Lin Hongying decided to found a new musical group and share Chinese pop songs with the rest of the world via English translation.

The beloved children's author Tomie dePaola, who was born in Connecticut on September 15, 1934 and whose imaginative and warm-hearted works crossed generations and continents, died on Monday at age 85. His death was announced, without details, on social media by his assistant, Bob Hechtel.
DePaola's works covered many areas of his imagination, from a magical tale centered on a kind and caring Calabrian grandmother—Strega Nona, which won the Caldecott Honor Award in 1976—to retelling the inspiring Comanche story of The Legend of the Bluebonnet. In 2000, he won a Newbery Honor for his book 26 Fairmount Avenue, which described his early childhood. Quiet, published in the 1980s, is one of his best-selling books. By dePaola's own count, he worked on some 270 books—the first in 1965, and the most recent published last year.
In 2011, he won a lifetime prize, the Children's Literature Legacy Award, which praised his “considerable and lasting contribution to literature for children”. In all, nearly 25 million copies of his books have been sold around the world.
Along with his work as an author, dePaola taught art and theater at various colleges in California, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. For many years, he made his home in New London, N.H.
In 1998, dePaola told a radio reporter that he hoped to recognize children for all their natural abilities. “As a grown-up,” he said, “I want to give children the credit for everything I can: their courage, their humor, their love, their intellectual abilities, their abilities to be fair, and their abilities to be unfair. Race walking shares many fitness benefits with running, research shows, while most likely contributing to fewer injuries. It does, however, have its own problem.
Race walkers are conditioned athletes. The longest track and field event at the Summer Olympics is the 50-kilometer race walk, which is about five miles longer than the marathon. But the sport's rules require that a race walker's knees stay straight through most of the leg swing and one foot remain in contact(接触) with the ground at all times. It's this strange form that makes race walking such an attractive activity, however, says Jaclyn Norberg, an assistant professor of exercise science at Salem State University in Salem, Mass.
Like running, race walking is physically demanding, she says. According to most calculations, race walkers moving at a pace of six miles per hour would burn about 800 calories(卡路里) per hour, which is approximately twice as many as they would burn walking, although fewer than running, which would probably burn about 1,000 or more calories per hour.
However, race walking does not pound the body as much as running does, Dr. Norberg says. According to her research, runners hit the ground with as much as four times their body weight per step, while race walkers, who do not leave the ground, create only about 1.4 times their body weight with each step.
As a result, she says, some of the injuries associated with running, such as runner's knee, are uncommon among race walkers. But the sport's strange form does place considerable stress on the ankles and hips, so people with a history of such injuries might want to be cautious in adopting the sport. In fact, anyone wishing to try race walking should probably first consult a coach or experienced racer to learn proper technique, she says. It takes some practice.
1.Why are race walkers conditioned athletes
A.They must run long distances.
B.They are qualified for the marathon.
C.They have to follow special rules.
D.They are good at swinging their legs.
2.What advantage does race walking have over running
A.It's more popular at the Olympics.
B.It's less challenging physically.
C.It's more effective in body building.
D.It's less likely to cause knee injuries.
3.What is Dr. Norberg's suggestion for someone trying race walking
A.Getting experts' opinions.
B.Having a medical checkup.
C.Hiring an experienced coach.
D.Doing regular exercises.
4.Which word best describes the author's attitude to race walking
A.Skeptical. B.Objective.
C.Tolerant. D.Conservative.

When Sally Millsopp, 53, with her 17-year-old daughter, Eleanor, participated in Race for Life in 2019. We had a big hug and knew it was something Mum would be proud of,” said Ms Millsopp.

With schools closed in the UK during the COVID-19 outbreak, most children must now be homeschooled. Parents have found themselves not only having to balance work and the children at home but also having to try and teach them. How can you keep your children focused while learning
Nicola Anderson—Head of Customer Support at the UK's leading online tutoring service My Tutor, provides new, up-to-date tips to hearten parents at this difficult time and advises how they can structure their children's days.
One is to keep to a regular timetable so it still feels like your child is taking part in the school day. Ms Anderson said, “Children of all ages do well on routine and boundaries; schools provide this in abundance and it will make most children feel secure and happy if they can follow a similar timetable for their homeschooling.”
Another tip is to create an environment which is favorable to learning. She said,“The environment should be free from distractions and ideally near to an open window, to provide them with appropriate levels of fresh air and natural light. Some children find it comfortable and helpful to have quiet, instrumental music played in the background to help them focus, but this isn't for everyone.”
Using technology to help with your child's learning is also advised. Many schools are offering online classes and resources to help and companies are reducing or even not charging their fees during this time.
It is also important to keep physical exercise as part of your routine. Joe Wicks, otherwise known as The Body Coach, has been keeping kids healthy with daily 10-minute workouts for children on his Youtube channel. Ms Anderson said,“It can be anything from running around the garden, walking the dog, a game of football or dancing around your living room!”

When I became president of Sustainable (可持续的) Spartans in May 2020, I had no idea how to successfully run a club on the Internet. My team and I were challenged with how to attract members and continue sustainable projects on campus (校园) while most students lived at home.
Despite the circumstances, my incredible team and I pushed forward. We organized events members could participate in regardless of location. Instead of focusing on building a more sustainable campus, we thought it was more important to get more and more students to accept sustainability.
In September, our Vermicomposting project began with the support from an online workshop. Vermicomposting is the process by which worms turn food waste and other materials into fertilizer. The workshop tied together club members and workshop students, educating and inspiring some to start their own worm bins at home.
In October, we held our first SpartansPickUp Day, co-hosted with Spartans Sierra Club. Fourteen teams of students safely picked up trash and posted pictures online. The cooperation brought some environmental student organizations together and attracted more student participation.
Our most notable accomplishment was working with the Office of Sustainability to build a pollinator (授粉者) garden on campus. The garden would improve the campus' climate by attracting pollinators, increasing biodiversity and reducing soil loss. We posted some videos of the garden, and students were expecting to return to campus to visit it.
Student organizations provide an important aspect of college life and I'm proud to say we've carried that into the digital space. Personally, I've discovered my club is an incredible outlet for me to dive into my sustainability passion and take a step back from the great stress of job search and online learning. I encourage all students to join a student organization to find how you can translate your passion into meaningful projects.
