In our daily lives, we probably make silly mistakes. While these moments can be worrying, they can also be dealt with humor. When we share a laugh at our mistakes, we can calm ourselves down with a little bit understanding and acceptance.
When one morning in a rush to school, I spilled (潑洒) my cup of orange juice. I immediately thought of the valuable minutes I would have to spend in cleaning up the floor. I raced back and forth to the sink (洗碗槽) with a kitchen cloth soaked (浸透) with juice to wash off. My legs were shaking as I watched from my window the school bus coming to my street. Within a minute, I had thrown the orange-juice-soaked cloth to the sink and ran outside to join the group of kids in entering the bus. When thinking about my morning rush to clean up the spilled juice on the bus, I realized how much unnecessary stress and worry I put myself through. I ended up smiling to myself about my not-so-serious nervousness over spilled juice.
These days I don’t usually spill orange juice, but I do sometimes spill a bit of spaghetti sauce on my pant or put on my sweater backwards when I’m really tired and in a hurry for school. In each of my mistakes, I try to remind myself not to take myself so seriously. It takes me a minute to calm down, take a deep breath and smile at my carelessness. It is the ability to see mistakes in a different way that enables me to find humor in everyday moments.
Humor, however, doesn’t always have to occur from silly mistakes. Kids may have a good laugh at comic books, classic jokes and stories told by friends and parents. What matters more is not where you find the humor in life, but that you can appreciate it.

7. What does the author intend to tell us?
A. Reading is a good habit for us. B. We should try to find where humor lies.
C. We can be happy by enjoying humor. D. It is natural for us to make mistakes.
With only about 1,000 pandas left in the world, China is badly trying to clone (克隆) the animal and save the endangered species. That’s a move similar to what a Texas A&M University researcher has been undertaking for the past five years in a project called “Noah’s Ark”.
Noah’s Ark is aimed at collecting eggs, embryos, semen and DNA of endangered animals and storing them in liquid nitrogen. “If certain species should become extinct,” Dr Duane Kraemer says, “there would be enough of the basic building blocks to reintroduce the species in the future.”
It is estimated that as many as 2,000 species of mammals, birds and reptiles will become extinct over the next 100 years. The panda, native only to China, is in danger of becoming extinct in the next 25 years.
This week, Chinese scientists said they grew an embryo by introducing cells from a dead female panda into the egg cells of a Japanese white rabbit. They are now trying to implant the embryo into a host animal.
The entire process could take from three to five years to complete.
“The nuclear transfer (核移植) of one species to another is not easy, and the lack of available panda eggs could be a major problem,” Kraemer believes. “They will probably have to do several hundred transfers to result in one pregnancy (懷孕). It takes a long time and it’s difficult, but this could be groundbreaking science if it works. They are certainly not putting any live pandas at risk, so it is worth the effort,” adds Kraemer, who is one of the leaders of the Project at Texas A&M, the first-ever attempt at cloning a dog.
“They are trying to do something that’s never been done, and this is very similar to our work in Noah’s Ark. We’re both trying to save animals that face extinction. I certainly appreciate their effort and there’s a lot we can learn from what they are attempting to do. It’s research that is very much needed.”
8. What is the aim of “Noah’s Ark” project?
A. To save endangered animals from dying out.
B. To collect DNA of endangered animals to study.
C. To transfer the nuclear of one animal to another.
D. To make efforts to clone the endangered pandas.
9. Kraemer thinks the major problem of panda cloning would be lacking ___ .
A. host animals B. enough money C. qualified researchers D. available panda eggs
10. What can we know about Dr Duane Kraemer?
A. He thinks the research is needed badly.
B. He tries to implant a panda’s egg into a rabbit.
C. He and his team have succeeded in cloning a dog.
D. He will work with Chinese scientists in cloning research.
11. What can be the best title for the text?
A. China’s Success in Panda Cloning B. The First Cloned Panda in the World
C. Exploring the Possibility to Clone Pandas D. China—the Native Place of Pandas Forever
Thousands of tiny, bright-red crabs (螃蟹) almost covered the beaches of Southern California completely last week. They appeared on beaches in Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Huntington Beach, and other seaside communities at low tide, surprising surfers and swimmers in the area. “I was so startled to see them,” Laguna Beach resident (居民) Lauren Cavalier told The Los Angeles Times. “I had no idea that this kind of thing happened.”
These bright-red crabs from the ocean are also called tuna crabs. Each one is about 1 to 3 inches long. Although they look like tiny crawfish or lobsters, they aren’t good for eating since they don’t have a lot of meat. Also their meat is poisonous, causing those who eat the meat to become sick. So residents don’t catch them for meat. These crabs are active during the day but prefer to stay in the shade and can die in the heat of direct sunlight.
Marine experts (海洋生物學家) say the crab population increase is likely a result of the El Nino weather pattern. This natural climate pattern occurs when the water in the Pacific Ocean near the equator gets hotter than usual. The warmer waters linked to El Nino pushed large quantities of the crabs up north from Mexico, the marine experts said.
This isn’t the first time that El Nino has affected the location of creatures living in the Pacific Ocean. The black skimmer is a subtropical seabird that has been spotted off the coast of San Diego, much further north than it usually lives. Marin needlefish, sea hares, and Dana Point whales have also appeared in areas further north than their typical habitats.
The red tuna crabs have been washed up along the coastline of Southern California for the past several years. Before that, they hadn’t been seen in the area for decades.
12. What does the underlined word “startled” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Worried. B. Thrilled. C. Shocked. D. Confused.
13. What probably pushed the red crabs up north according to the marine experts?
A. Warmer waters. B. Air pollution. C. Heavy Rains. D. Habitat loss.
14. What do we know about the red crabs from the text?
A. They live in the Pacific Ocean. B. They are fond of enjoying sunshine.
C. They are delicious to eat. D. They are a kind of crawfish.
15. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. El Nino is changing the location of many creatures.
B. Red crabs are suffering from extinction because of heat.
C. Residents of Southern California are threatened by red crabs.
D. Countless tuna crabs appeared on the beaches of Southern California.

One possible version:
Recently, our class have had a heated discussion about whether the zoo should be moved out of the city.
Some of my classmates are in favor of the move. They say large crowds of tourists to the zoo will result in traffic jams. They also say that once moved, animals will have more space and better living conditions in the suburbs.
However, other students are against the idea. They say it will take much time for many animals to get used to new living environment and what’s more, moving the zoo may cause the death of some animals.
I agree to moving the zoo out, for the animals can live in a larger and more comfortable place.
