Music without Boundaries
Ⅰ. Background Information
1. Characteristics of the students:
Generally speaking, the Junior High Grade 9 students are quite different from the others. They have done their two years in middle school and acquired a certain amount of knowledge about English. On the one hand, they, more or less, adapt themselves to the studies and life and become more mature than what they were in Grade 7 or 8. But on the other hand, most of them wish they can do better. In term of this kind of special situation, as teachers, we should inspire them in appropriate way, stimulate their developing potentials and make friends with them.
2. Strength and weakness of the students in English Learning:
After two-year’s study, they have gained certain achievements in reading comprehension, listening, vocabulary, writing, speaking and performing.
But they still lack the ability to express their own ideas logically in English and also they don’t know enough about the world around them which includes the different culture.
3. Non-intelligence Factors Affecting the Students’ learning:
Different family Education.
Different learning and life experience: the students have already know some of the famous cartoons like Mickey Mouse but they still are not able to analyze the meaningful importance behind.
Different personal interests: most of the students are interested in the cartoons and American culture while they may feel confused when it comes to some exotic ideas.
Ⅱ.Teaching Aims
1, Knowledge aims
Enable the students to understand the background of Tan Dun, traditional Chinese music, and western music.
Enable the students to know the differences and connections between traditional Chinese music and western.
2, Language skill aims:
Enable the students to promote their skills in reading and speaking.
Enable the students to use the useful new words and expressions to express themselves.
Enable the students to talk about their own ideas towards different music.
3, Emotion and Attitudes aims:
Cultivation of the students’ love for their own national culture and customs.
Cultivation of the ability to discuss and cooperate with each other.
Cultivation of the students’ ability to question others’ opinions and see one certain thing from two sides.
Ⅲ. An Analysis of the Teaching Contents:
1, Introduction to the importance and function of this lesson:
The article itself is about the famous composer, Tan Dun. He’s one of the most famous musicians who can create music without boundaries. The students will be enabled to improve different kinds of reading skills like skimming and scanning by watching the pictures or film clips, group discussion, pair-working and thus express their own ideas about the music and maybe different and creative ideas towards the composer and his music.

Focal Points
a) Help the students to learn to figure out main ideas by catching the key words.
b) Help the students to learn to find the detail information by making use of the words with capital letter at the beginning, the new words which may be a stuck, the numbers and so on.
c) Help the students try to use their own words to express themselves.

a) Develop students’ reading skills.
b) Lead the students to think critically..

Step 1 Warm-up
*What's the name of the man
*What happened to him
*What does he do
(Show Tan’s picture and let Ss guess)
Step 2 Lead-in
Play a film clip about Tan.
Check if we guess right.
Introduce Tan to Ss.
Step 3 Pre-reading
Try to guess the main idea of the article with the picture given.
(Ss can talk about anything in their predictions It’s open to them to predict.)
Which music pieces are mentioned
Which one do you like best
Step 4 While-Reading
(a) Fast reading: What is the main idea of each para. (match)
(Ss should learn to catch the key words and DON ‘T read word by word and the mind map can be started here which will be see at the retelling part)
(b) Careful reading
The students read the article and fill in the table about Tan’s information.
The students read the article carefully to answer the questions.
The students read the article carefully to check True or False.
The students read the article carefully to fill in the blanks.
(When checking the answers, help the students to figure out some of the language points which may help them to understand)
(c) Discuss about what is “Music without Boundaries”mean
Step 4 Post-reading: Discussion and summary
Group working( 4 members in one) to discuss:
“Music is without boundaries.” What should we do to protect and inherit(传承) our own traditional music
