Teaching Objectives
By the end of the class, students are expected to
(1) use although/though to contrast two clauses
(2) use so… that and such… that to emphasize the qualities or characteristics of somebody or something and show the result of it
(3) use so that to talk about the purpose of doing something

Step 1 Free talk
Ask, Do you like watching films What’s your favourite kind of film Who’s your favourite film star
Step 2 Using so that
Tell students my favourite film star is Jackie Chan. Show the sentences:
(1) I often watch his films so that I can learn more about him.
(2) He joins humour and exciting action together so that people will like his films.
(3) He works hard so that he can win many awards.
(4) He went to Hollywood so that more people could know about him and Chinese kung fu.
Ask, What do we use so that to talk about, the purpose of doing something or the result of something Say, We usually use can, will, could, would or may after so that.

Step 3 Using so… that and such… that
Show the sentences:
(1) Jackie Chan works hard so that he can win many awards.
(2) He has acted in so many films that he is popular around the world.
(3) He spends so much time doing charity work that he helps lots of people.
Ask, What do we use so… that to talk about
Show some pictures about Audrey Hepburn and talk about her.
(1) As a child, Hepburn practised so hard that she dreamed of becoming a successful ballet dancer. As a child, Hepburn was such a hard-working girl that she dreamed of becoming a successful ballet dancer.
(2) Hepburn was so beautiful that she caught Colette’s attention. Hepburn was such a beautiful actress that she caught Colette’s attention.
(3) The film Roman Holiday was so successful that Hepburn soon became famous. Roman Holiday was such a successful film that Hepburn soon became famous.
(4) Hepburn was so kind that she helped poor children in different parts of the world. Hepburn was such a kind person that she helped poor children in different parts of the world.
Students work out the rule: We use an __________ or an _________ between so and that. We use a ___________ between such and that.

Pair work. Students talk about their favourite film star with so… that and such… that.

Step 4 Using although/though
Ask, Why did Audrey Hepburn’s achievements go beyond the film industry
Show the sentences:
(1) Although Hepburn was an actress, she spent many years working closely with UNICEF.
(2) Though Hepburn passed away in 1991, she will always be remembered.
(3) I want to be as helpful as Hepburn, although I am not famous.
Tell students we use although/though to contrast two clauses. Although is more formal than though.
Students work out the rule: We can use although/though at the ________ or in the ________ of a sentence.
Find the mistake in each sentence:
(1) Although Hepburn had never played any major roles before, but Colette insisted that Hepburn was the perfect girl for the lead role in the play.
(2) Though I haven’t seen many films of Hepburn’s, but I like her very much.
Remind students that we should never use the conjunction but in sentences with although/though.
