It all started at the beginning of Grade Nine. At first, Carmen wasn't really sure what was happening. In class, she had to squint (眯着眼睛看) to see the blackboard clearly. Her teacher noticed that and said, “Carmen, I've noticed you squinting a lot. Are you having trouble seeing the board ”
Carmen shook her head. “I'm fine, Mrs Cruz.” She didn't want anyone to know her problem.
At home, she had to sit closer and closer to the television. Her mother noticed her squinting as she watched her favourite shows, and she began to get suspicious. “Tomorrow, you must go to see the eye doctor,” her mother said.
Three days later, Carmen had new glasses. She was told to wear them all the time. “All of the kids at school will think I am stupid,” she said.
“You look just as beautiful with those glasses on as you do without them,” her mother said.
The next day, Carmen kept the glasses in her pocket as she walked into the schoolyard. Suddenly, she heard her friend Theresa shout.
Carmen ran over to her. “What's wrong ” she asked.
“My silver ring is gone!” Theresa cried. Then they both looked for the ring in the grassy area of the playground.
Carmen realised that she could search better if she could see better. She took the glasses out of her pocket and put them on. Everything looked so different! So clear! Then a glimmer (闪烁的微光) of silver caught her eye. “Here it is,” she shouted.
“Thanks, Carmen,” Theresa said. “Your glasses look great!”
“Thanks,” Carmen replied shyly. As they walked back toward the school building, two more girls told Carmen how great she looked in her glasses. Carmen smiled. “Maybe wearing glasses won't be so bad after all,” she thought.

Deborah Ahenkorah comes from Ghana, a country in West Africa. She has loved to read since she was a little girl. But all the books she read when she was little were American books and they showed a world that was different from hers. When Ahenkorah grew up, she started Golden Baobab. It is an organisation (组织) that provides African children with books written by African people.
Golden Baobab does this in several different ways. First, it organises programmes and workshops (讲习班). These workshops support (支持) African writers. In these workshops writers can learn new things and improve their writing. Second, Golden Baobab connects writers to publishers (出版商). Finally, it offers the Golden Baobab Prize. This is the most famous way in which Golden Baobab works. Any writer who is an African citizen (公民) can compete for the prize, and each story must happen in Africa.
“Children need books they can relate to (理解). When they see characters who are like themselves in a story, they know that their experiences are important,” said Tiffany Morris, who works for Golden Baobab.

If you want to make films, you'll be interested in our new competition.
If you're between 11 and 18, you can enter this year's Film-making Competition. The film should last no more than 12 minutes and you should have at least three main characters. Last year's winner had 8 people in it but we don't usually expect so many!
This is the third year of the competition. In the last two years, we accepted any kind of film, from scary films to comedies, but this year we are looking for dramas. There'll be another competition later in the year for people interested in making documentaries.
We have seen some great films over the years from very exciting young film-makers. Last year's films were about family, and we saw some wonderful entries (参赛作品). This year, however, we want films about the weather — it can either be about how it makes you feel or how it can change a day. A challenging theme!
The judges this year are Martha Fernando, presenter of our film programmme, and director Mark Matthews, whose latest film is now in cinemas.
There are some fantastic prizes. Our first-prize winner will visit London International Academy, one of the top film schools. We have other prizes to give away — there are 100 books and also some of the latest cameras to win.
You can send your films to us by post or bring them to our office in Market Square. The judges' decision is final. You'll have the chance to see the best films when they are shown at the Town Hall.

Humoody was born in Iraq. When he was two years old, his face was badly hurt and he couldn't see any more. He came to the United States to get medical care and now lives with an American family in Washington State.
Humoody quickly learned to use a cane (手杖) to get around. He also started clicking (使发出咔哒声), sensing objects by listening for echoes (回声). To help Humoody develop this skill, his family found him an echolocation (回声定位) teacher, Juan Ruiz. Ruiz is also blind and he has been echolocating for many years. Even someone who's not blind can try it, he says. Stand facing a wall a couple of feet away. Make some noise by clicking or talking out loud. Listen carefully. Now walk a little closer to the wall and keep making your noise. Can you hear how it changes as the wall gets nearer
Experiment with how your voice or clicks sound in different parts of your home. “Every room has a different sound to it,” Ruiz says.
How does the sound of a kitchen or bathroom compare to the sound of a carpeted (铺有地毯的) room What about a long hallway The differences you hear are the same kinds of clues (线索) that blind people listen to. With lots of practice, their brains have learned to get information from these clues.
Humoody has never let being blind slow him down. Learning how to echolocate is helping him get around more easily and safely, especially in places where he can't take his cane, like the football field.

Scientists at Stanford University in California built a robot called OceanOne. The robot can visit ocean areas that are too deep for human divers (潜水员) to reach. Recently, it made its first deep-sea dive — it visited an ancient undersea shipwreck (沉船).
Diving into the deep ocean can be dangerous for humans. A diver's biggest enemy is water pressure (压力). Most divers can't go much deeper than 100 feet. At greater depths (深处), the pressure is strong enough to kill a person. So researchers often send submersibles (潜水器) to deep waters because they can deal with the pressure. However, most of these machines can't pick up objects — they can only take photos.
That's why OceanOne was built. It's a humanoid robot — a robot made to look like a human being. It can travel to depths that are too dangerous for humans.
Scientists control OceanOne from a ship. The robot's “eyes” are two video cameras that allow people on the ship to see what's going on underwater. The robot's hands can carefully pick up objects.
“OceanOne shows how powerful it can be for humans and robots to work together as a team,” says Khatib, one of the scientists who designed OceanOne.
