My name is Lucy Razil. I’m a very lucky person because I make my living doing what I love—painting beautiful pictures.
I’ve loved painting for as long as I can remember. I painted my first picture when I was just four. I had a bedroom with walls the color of the summer sky. One day, when Mom wasn’t looking, I gathered up my paint pots and painted a summer scene on one blue wall. I painted myself and my dog Clyde in a meadow filled with flowers. I painted the sun behind a fluffy white cloud.
I was just finishing the painting when Mom walked into my room. Her mouth dropped open and she stood completely still. “I’m in big trouble,” I remember thinking to myself. So I was really surprised when Mom said, “What a beautiful picture, Lucy!” The picture stayed on my bedroom wall and is still there today, nearly 30 years later. I see it every time I go home to visit Mom.
I tell this story because it shows how much Mom supported my love of painting. When I was in school, she cared as much about what I did in art class as what I did in math or reading or science.
She saved all my paintings, and she hung many of them on the walls in our house. She never said, “Painting is a fine hobby, but it’s a hard way to make a living.” Instead, she said, “You are so talented. You’ll be a success. Follow your dream.”
Today I am a success as a painter. I am happy that people love my paintings enough to hang them in their homes. I am proud that some of my paintings hang in museums around the country. Most of all, I am grateful that Mom has always supported me. Much of my success is because of her.

Teenagers should be allowed to develop a hobby. A hobby can give you different types of challenges. You’ll need to find different interests and decide which hobby really interests you. You can take up a hobby that can challenge you physically, such as rock climbing or kayaking. While this may be hard to do, here are four great reasons to work it in:
Hobbies help build a teen’s confidence. By finding an area of interest, a teen can build his skills. This leads to positive results and builds teenagers’ confidence.
A hobby helps teens have a sense of their identity. Our likes and dislikes help us know who we are as people. Hobbies help by sending a signal, “I like doing this. This makes me feel good. Therefore, this is a part of who I am.”
Hobbies keep teens from getting bored. Bored teens look for things to do and are more likely to do something bad. Helping teens develop a hobby is helping them stay out of trouble.
Hobbies will help teens to get on well with their parents. When a teen is busy with a hobby, his parents have easy access (机会) to something to praise him about. They can communicate with each other easily.

Eldon and Jay Solve a Problem
There were two twin brothers named Eldon and Jay, who lived in a big city in the south. Eldon and Jay were the same in nearly every way, as both teenagers had dark hair, round eyeglasses, and bright smiles. They talked in the same confident manner, and they even had similar styles of dancing, walking, and gesturing. People often got the two of them confused.
However, there was one small difference between the twins. Unlike Jay, whose favorite hobby was making pastries(糕点), Eldon couldn’t stand eating anything sweet. Ever since he’d been a baby, Eldon had refused to eat cookies, cakes, candies, or any dessert. Whenever Jay was baking(烘焙), Eldon would go to his room and practice playing the trombone(长号).
Eldon had played the trombone for a year, but he was still a beginner, and in Jay’s opinion, Eldon was not a gifted trombone player. One day, when Jay was in the kitchen making cookies, he heard Eldon practice playing the trombone. “What a terrible noise,” said Jay to himself. “It sounds like an elephant crying.”
But Jay didn’t shout at Eldon. He just went up to Eldon’s room and gently asked, “Could you please play more quietly while I’m trying to bake ”
Eldon was a little surprised by his brother’s polite request, but he said, It seems my playing is interrupting you. However, I also find it hard to be in the kitchen when you’re baking, since, as you know, I can’t stand to be around sugar. Maybe we can figure out a solution together.”
The twins sat down and worked out a plan in which Eldon would only practice the trombone in the practice room at school, and Jay would learn how to bake and only bake at the bakery. Each of the twins found that this solution worked quite well.

Born in 1948 in Los Angeles, California, in the United States, Mark Levine is now a singer, song-writer and English teacher. After working as a volunteer in low-income (收入) communities in the US for nearly 30 years, Levine came to China and worked as an English teacher 16 years ago. Levine didn’t realize at the time that he would soon come to fall in love with the country and end up staying here.
Levine likes to write songs and sing along to them with his guitar. So far, Levine has written more than seventy songs about China, with a wide variety of themes such as traveling, workers, Chinese culture and so on.
In 2020, the unexpected outbreak of COVID-19 changed him a lot. During the time, he said, “I was mostly stuck inside my apartment teaching online classes for three months. At the same time, I spent lots of time talking with my close friends I knew across China and abroad on line to learn the information about the outside.” He learned how the government and the Chinese people worked together to fight the virus (病毒), he was moved and he really wanted to write it down. Levine said that Chinese people had a collective sense that “we are all in this together”. A song about it was added to his large collection of musical stories about his life in China, the song’s name is “Together we must take a stand -fight the novel coronavirus.”
“I’ve never felt unsafe in China about anything, including COVID-19. I’m glad I am here,” he said.
Levine hopes that the world can work together to defeat COVID-19, just like the lyric he wrote in his song: “Coronavirus, we will defeat. So here and there in every land, together we will take a stand.”

Interest is the best teacher. For Lu Qirui, running is her favorite. Lu, seventeen-year-old, is from Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. She became famous after a video showed she finished a 100-meter sprint (短跑) in just 12.07 seconds. She just took part in a school sports meeting, but these numbers are good enough to tell people that she can run as fast as a national-level athlete. It’s almost impossible for a teenager to achieve that speed.
When Lu was a little girl, she fell in love with all kinds of sports. Her father is a sports lover. And he used to take her to play basketball, play ping-pong or go swimming. If you ask her who her superstar is, she will tell you it’s her father. Her father led her into the world of sports. As she grew older, she showed a talent for sports.
Lu was a fourth grader when she entered the school’s track and field (田径) training team. Although she is young, Lu keeps self-discipline (自律) in training every day. She gets up at 6 a.m., starts training at 6:30 a.m. and keeps it until 7:30 a.m. And she will continue training from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. after school. She has to spend a lot of time on running, but she has never fallen behind others in her studies. She always makes full use of her time to do what she likes.
“I love sports, especially running. So it’s not challenging for me to hold on to it,” said Lu. In the future, Lu plans to make more achievements in running. As for her dream, she said, “I want to be a P.E. teacher so that more students can feel the happiness that sports bring to them.”

Do you know pickleball(匹克球) Much like tennis and Ping-pong, it’s a popular new sport in the USA.
Pickleball is easy and fun to play. It is played on a court, the size of a badminton court, with a lower net similar(类似) to that of tennis. There are two or four players in a game. Players hit a whiffle ball(塑料空心球) over the net with bats. The bats are made of wood, and they are larger than ping-pong bats. The rule of the game is that a player (or a team) first gets 11 points and also leads the other side by at least 2 points, and then he (or the team) wins the game. For example, if it’s 10 to 10, one player has to make it 12 to 10 to win the game.
The game was invented in the 1960s. Several parents were on vacation in Bainbridge Island, Washington, the US. They wanted to find an activity that their families could enjoy together. So they came up with the sport.
No one is sure how the sport got its name. Most people believe it was called pickleball because of a dog named Pickles. He kept running after the ball when the inventors first played the sport, so everyone called it Pickles’ ball.
Kara Foster, a 60-year-old woman from New York, tried the game this year. Like many others, she fell in love with the sport and now plays it every day.
“It helps me keep fit,” She says. “Best of all, it’s much easier for me to chat with my friends while playing the sport.”
