Unit 3 Language in use
I. Analysis of Teaching Material & Target Students
The topic of this module is great inventions. And this lesson is for Unit3,so we mainly focus on the language point: Passive voice. In the last 2 modules ,we have learnt about the past and present passive voice. Of course ,in this module we focus on the future passive voice. As a result, today’s lesson is based on the line of great inventions in the past ,today and future as well as the structures of them.
Then, the students are ninth graders, they are active in thoughts and full of ideas .So they are interest in this topic and have command the relative words. But They have relatively limited skills in expressing themselves by using the proper form of the passive voice.
II. Teaching objectives
For learning ability, students will improve their listening skills as well as learn how to use different tenses of passive voice .
For thinking quality, they will learn to think critically and creatively .
For language ability, they will learn about different tenses about passive voice .Also they will be able to come up with different kinds of creative ideas about future inventions and express them in details freely.
For culture character, they will learn about the great inventions in both China and other Western countries.
III. Key points and difficult points
According to the teaching objectives, The key points are to
a ) learn to cognize and define certain words as they are listening to the passage.
b ) have a good command of the structures of passive voice through inductive method.
c ) motivate the students think critically and creatively about great inventions.
d) develop the students’ love for our country and the spirit of creation.
The difficult points are to
a )understand the deep relationship between the passive voice and different tenses.
b) use the proper tenses of passive voice to solve practical problems.
c) obtain, promote, and create ideas individually.

Communicative approach, audio-lingual method,situation approach.

VI. Teaching procedures:
Task 1 Lead- in and review
Step 1 lead in
To lead in the class, the teacher will
1) first let the students talk about the Chinese great inventions they know in the past.
2) Two videos of paper making and printing which belongs to the Chinese great inventions will be given to them.
The students will
1) talk about the Chinese great inventions they know in the past.
2) say something about their feelings of the past great inventions ,maybe good or bad.
Purpose:
1) To activate the students’ background knowledge and the videos will arouse their interest.
2) To lead the students think critically about the great inventions in the past.
Step 2 Review
The teacher presents a short passage which the students have learnt in unit2
(The same module). This content of the passage is also about the invention of paper making and printing.
Purpose:
1)In the passage ,some words in red will help the students feel the function of the past passive voice .After appreciation ,they will also know the usage of paper making and printing--making books.
2) The content of this passage makes it easy to lead in the following part --listening part which is also about the books.
Task 2 Listening
Step 1 pre-listening
The students will
1) make predictions and talk about the differences between the books in the past and today from the aspects of price and quality.
2) guess the meaning and part of speech of the words they need to fill in.
Step2 While- listening
The students will
1) fill in the tables designed from the listening material
2) learn about the situations and the problem about the books in the past and today,and find ways to solve it.
Purpose: Students can 1. learn about the details about the books in the past and today
2. improve the ability of listening for details.
Step3 Post- listening ( Talk about the western great inventions in the past)
The teacher will:
1)raise the question”Thanks to the Chinese great inventors Cai Lun and Bi Sheng, we we were able to make books . But both of them are from China,what about the great inventors in western countries ”
2)Next ,the teacher will show the students some pictures of the Western great inventors as well as the information of their inventions ,like the time and the places.
3) lead the students to talk about these inventions by using the past passive voice.
Then the students will
1) Learn about the information first
2)work in pairs, practice the information above by using the past passive voice.
Purpose: Students can
1. learn some information about Western great inventions
2. have a brief review of the usage about the passive voice
Step4 Talk about the great inventions today
The teacher will
raise the question :”So what kind of great inventions(like phones,planes and TVs) are invented today
The students will
talk about this in the present passive voice.
Purpose: Both step 3 and 4 will help the students have a brief review about the passive voice and the present voice which will help them better understand the structure of the future passive voice.
Task 3 Grammar
Step1 Make sentences and find the language rules
The teacher will
1) Show the students 3 pictures about the classrooms in different times( in the past,today and the future.) and let them talk first .Later some pictures about the ways the students study are shown.
2) Ask the students to make different sentences to talk about the ways the students study in different times. In this part ,the different structures of the passive voice (from the past ,present to the future passive voice)will be used one by one.
Then the students are going to
1) talk about the pictures one by one.
2) talk about the ways they study in the past,today and future by using past passive voice, present passive voice as well as the future passive voice.
Purpose:
1)Through making the sentences with different patterns of passive voice and studying them ,the students will be able to summarize the different structures of passive voice from the sentence they made by themselves.
2)Learning in situations which related to themselves can make the students more interested and excited. And that will help them better understand the grammar
Step 2 Summarize the language rules
The teacher leads students to find the fact that there is a connection between the passive voice and the tenses.
Purpose: During this part, the students learn the grammar in situations which related to themselves. That will be easy for the students to understand, find and summarize by themselves .They are motivated to learn the grammar.
Task 4 Language in practice
Step1 Language controlled use
The teacher will
1)lead the student to notice the tenses of the sentences first.
2) Asks the students to finish the exercises in the book and then check the answers.
The students will
1) pay attention to the tenses of the sentences.
2) finish the exercises.
Purpose:
To check the students command of the future passive voice.
Step 2 Language situation use
The teacher will
ask the students to design a new classroom for the students in poor areas by using the future passive voice,such as I think...will be added/bought/changed
The students will
express their ideas by using the pattern.
Purpose:
The situation of design a new classroom makes it easy and interesting for the students to use the future passive voice . They will be very active in this activity.
Step3 Language free use
The teacher will
raise two questions:
1. What kind of great inventions will be invented in the future
2.How will our life be change by them
The students are going to
1) discuss freely from different aspects like the traffic,clothes,food and so on.
2) Of course, the future passive voice will be used when they express themselves freely.
Purpose:
In this activity,they can talk about any kind of great inventions they want which makes them excited and active. Of course,this kind of group work can let the students share their own special ideas and appreciate each other.
Step4 Summarize
1)The teacher and the students will summarize the 3 different tenses of the passive voice together to consolidate the students’ memory of the structures.
2)The teacher leads the students to find the influences of the great inventions and encourage them to be hardworking and creative in order to make a difference.
