Often, high school students don’t have a wide selection of courses from which they may choose. However, many online high schools offer a course list that includes almost everything from basics like math and science to extras like computer programming and instrument lessons. Many online high schools also offer students the chance to take advanced classes that may not be as readily available in some traditional schools.
An online high school student doesn’t have to get up very early in the morning and rush out to school. Instead, he can get a reasonable amount of sleep and start his day on his preferred schedule. While online schools do have attendance requirements, an online school can be more flexible. And, the online high school students don’t have to worry about what to wear or what their classmates will say about how they look that day.
An online high school student needn’t be worried about a class that is moving too quickly or too slowly for him. Likewise, he may be able to take advantage of course offerings that suit his own learning style. For example, some online high schools offer coursework that meets the needs of visual or auditory(听觉的) learners in addition to those who can learn from traditional schools.
Since online high school students don’t need to spend time waiting for class to start and traveling to and from school, they may have more time to follow their hobbies. For example, if a student is training in dancing, he may have more time to practice. If another student is learning a musical instrument, he may have more time for that as well. Even part time work and socializing may fit better into the life of a student taking advantage of the flexibility offered by an online school.
4.What’s the difference between traditional high school and online high school according to Paragraph 1
A.Range of classes to learn. B.Tradition of teaching.
C.Ways of selecting courses. D.Chances of learning basics.
5.What does an online school student need to do
A.Start his day early. B.Attend class according to rules.
C.Mind his appearance. D.Have a tight schedule based on interest.
6.How can an online school meet students’ needs
A.By offering courses of different styles.
B.By listing the experiment results for remembering.
C.By slowing down the teaching pace.
D.By reducing the time for coursework.
7.What’s the best title for the text
A.Traditional Schools or Online Schools
B.Strengths of Traditional Schools
C.Importance of Online Schools
D.Flexibility of Online Schools

The world’s insects are going down the path of extinction, threatening a “catastrophic collapse of nature’s ecosystems”, according to the first global scientific review. More than 40% of insect species are declining and a third are endangered, the analysis found. The rate of extinction is eight times faster than that of mammals, birds and reptiles.
“It should be of huge concern to all of us, for insects are at the heart of every food web. They pollinate(授粉) the large majority of plant species, keep the soil healthy, recycle nutrients, control pests, and much more. Love them or loathe them, we humans cannot survive without insects,” said Prof Dave Goulson at the University of Sussex in the UK.
The analysis, published in the journal Biological Conservation, says intensive(集约型) agriculture is the main driver of the declines, particularly the heavy use of pesticides. Urbanisation and climate change are also significant factors.
“If insect species losses cannot be stopped, this will have catastrophic consequences for both the planet’s ecosystems and for the survival of mankind. It is very rapid. In 10 years you will have a quarter less, in 50 years only half left and in 100 years you will have none,” said review author Francisco Sánchez Bayo, at the University of Sydney, Australia.
One of the biggest impacts of insect loss is on many birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish that eat insects. “If this food source is taken away, all these animals starve to death,” he said. Such effects have already been seen in Puerto Rico, where a recent study revealed a 98% fall in ground insects over 35 years.
Matt Shardlow, at the conservation charity Buglife, said: “It is thoughtful to see this evidence that shows the pitiful state of the world’s insect populations. It is increasingly obvious that the planet’s ecology is breaking and there is a need for a strong and global effort to prevent and change these terrible trends. ”
8.Why are people worried about the insect decline
A.They are vital to ecosystems. B.They provide food for pests.
C.They pollinate all plants. D.They enrich the soil.
9.What is the main cause of insect losses
A.More and more trees. B.Restrictions on pesticides.
C.Upgrading agriculture. D.Friendly environment.
10.Where can you find the exact time of insect losses
A.In Paragraph 1. B.In Paragraph 2.
C.In Paragraph 3. D.In Paragraph 4.
11.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Humans Can Survive the Punishment of Nature
B.Insect Declining Is Breaking Nature’s Ecosystems
C.Nature’s Ecosystems Are Influenced by Humans
D.Insects and Animals Are Dying Out in Puerto Rico

Studies have shown most people fail to realise how much time they spend on their smart phones each day.
Frank and Amelia’s family were put to a test, using a free app called “Moment screen Time Tracker”. The Vascellaros — Frank, Amelia, 14 year old twins Frankie and Joe, and 17 year old Sam — all said they did not really know they were spending so much time on their phones each day.
“Honestly, I don’t feel like I’m on my phone a lot,” Amelia Vascellaro said. Amelia was on her phone far less often than Frank, according to the app. While Amelia spent about an hour per day on the phone, Frank spent close to four hours on his phone — which came as a shock to him. The children’s times varied but they often spent more than a couple of hours on the phone as well.
Minneapolis based Dr Kirsten Lind Seal sees phone usage come up a lot among families. Lind Seal said many family members’ phone use has become problematic.
“If we hear more than once, ’Do you have to be on your phone right now Can you please put your phone down Did you hear what I said?’, it may be a sign that it is negatively influencing our family relationships and our daily lives,” she said.
Lind Seal said actually paying attention to how much time one spends on the phone is a good first step in deciding when to put it down.
She asks parents to encourage more face to face communication for teens and young adults as they continue developing their social and emotional skills. “What we find is that we are really losing out on empathy — the ability to understand other people’s feelings and problems — when we spend a lot of time on our smart phones to communicate with other people,” she said.
12.How did the families tested by the app feel about the test results
A.Satisfied. B.Doubtful.
C.Uninterested. D.Astonished.
13.Why did Lind Seal mention the three questions in Paragraph 5
A.To encourage people to live a simple life.
B.To explain the signs of problematic phone use.
C.To show the importance of close relationships.
D.To ask people if they use phones too much.
14.What did Lind Seal want to convey in the last paragraph
A.We should make more face to face communication.
B.We can understand each other better using smartphones.
C.Our ability of empathy is strengthened by smartphones.
D.Smartphone usage improves the teens’ emotional skills.
15.Where is this text most likely from
A.A diary. B.A guidebook.
C.A novel. D.A magazine.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面文章, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一个完整短文。
Last Sunday, I received a phone call from my friend, Alun. He asked me to help with his group who entertained at the local hospitals. Due to my unfinished homework, I was unwilling to go, but finally I was persuaded to help out this one time, which proved to be an unforgettable and meaningful experience.
That evening, Alun picked me up and we went to a local hospital. I was going to join his musical group with my guitar and maybe sing some solo songs as well.
The hospital was large. When guided into the hall we were surprised to see so many patients and staff there. A sight like this aroused our sympathy. Some patients were in wheelchairs or with their arms in bandages, while others were with their drips attached. Maybe their days seemed to be dull during the period of treatment, so our coming brought some color into their lives. Seeing their happy faces, I thought joining Alun’s group was a worthwhile thing to do.
Among the audience, I spotted one particular young girl aged about 13 who was wearing a head scarf and appeared to be more delighted than the others. When we started our performance, excitement filled the hall. Alun mentioned to me that the young girl who I had noticed earlier was singing along with all our songs quietly to herself. At a break, out of curiosity, I asked one of the nurses about the girl. She said that the girl suffered serious burns and was being treated and that she was a bit down these days, but our performance had lifted the girl’s spirits. Our songs moved all the people present. They all cheered for us, including the young girl and we were inspired. Facing these lovely people, we really wanted to do more.

Dear Tom,
I am excited to tell you that the first Science and Technology Festival was held in our school last month, which aimed at enriching us students’ school life and promoting the students’ awareness of innovation.
There were a variety of activities in the festival, which included Makers on Campus, where participants could show their designs and products, and an exhibition of the students’ original inventions, designs and literary works. With the enthusiastic participation and support of all the students, the activity turned out to be a great success. I was astonished at schoolmates’ creativity and teamwork spirits.
I do hope more activities will be held in my school to provide us with chances to practice our critical thinking and problem solving abilities.

One possible version:
We asked the girl if she would like to sing with us. At first, she refused our suggestion, saying she had never sung in front of audience before, and that she was afraid of getting it wrong. However, after our encouragement, she decided to try one song but only as part of our group, which turned out to be a success. She had a soft and clear voice and it was amazing. The audience looked at her with adoration. They warmly applauded and it lasted for several minutes.
One possible version:
After her performance,__I saw a change in the girl’s eyes. They seemed much brighter than when we had first met her just a couple of hours ago. She appeared to have gained a lot of confidence from this experience. She told me we had made her day. A bright smile spread across the little girl’s face. I was pleased that I neither missed the opportunity to help others nor just thought of myself and my own needs. Stepping out not only helped people in need, but also gave me the sweet taste of helping others.
