Twenty minutes of exercise may help kids with I ADHD (注意缺陷障碍)settle in to read or solve a maths problem, a new research suggests.
The small study, of 40 8—10-year-olds, looked only at the short-term effects of a single period time of exercise. And researchers warn that they are not saying exercise is the answer to ADHD.
But it seems that exercise may at least do no harm to kids’ ability to focus, they say. And further studies should look into whether it's a good choice for managing some children’s ADHD.
“This is only a first study,” said lead researcher Matthew B. Pontifex of Michigan State University in East Lansing.
“We need to learn how long the effects last, and how exercise might combine with or compare to traditional ADHD treatments like stimulant medications," Pontifex explained.
He noted that there’s been a lot of research into older adults. But little is known about kids, even though some parents, teachers and doctors have advocated exercise for helping children with ADTID.
So for their study, Pontifex and his colleagues found 20 children with diagnosed or suspected ADHD, and 20 ADHD-free kids of the same age and family-income level.
All of the children took a standard test of their ability to ignore distractions and stay focused on a simple task at hand —the main ability that troubles kids with ADHD, Pontifex noted. The kids also took standard tests of reading, spelling and maths skills.
Each child took the tests after either 20 minutes of treadmill(跑步机) exercise or 20 minutes of quiet reading (on separate days). Overall, the study found, both groups of children performed better after exercise than after reading.
On the test of focusing ability, the ADHD group was correct on about 80 percent of responses after reading, versus about 84 percent after exercise. Kids without ADHD performed better一reaching about a 90 percent correct rate after exercise.
Similarly, both groups of kids scored higher on their reading and maths tests after exercise than after reading.
1.What does the new research suggest
A.Exercising will make kids with ADHD stronger.
B.Exercising will help kids with ADHD focus better.
C.Exercising will help make maths problems easier.
D.Exercising will help kids read more quickly.
2.Why did Pontifex's team need 20 ADHD-free kids during the research
A.They need to compare their performance with that of kids with ADHD.
B.They need them to do some reading and maths problems after school.
C.They need them to take a standard test of their ability to ignore distractions.
D.They need them to take standard tests of reading, spelling and maths skills.
3.What happened to the kids after exercising
A.Kids with ADHD performed better than kids without ADHD in reading.
B.Kids without ADHD performed the same before and after exercising.
C.Both groups of kids scored higher on their reading and maths tests after reading.
D.Kids with ADHD and kids without ADHD performed better after exercise.

Good Morning Britain's Susanna Reid is used to grilling guests on the sofa every morning, but she is cooking up a storm in her latest role —showing families how to prepare delicious and nutritious meals on a tight budget.
In Save Money: Good Food, she visits a different home each week and with the help of chef Matt Tebbutt offers top tips on how to reduce food waste, while preparing recipes for under 5 per family a day. I had often dreamt of the possibility of spending a year away from my hometown of Leeds in England, living in a foreign country. When I was old enough, however, I thought that my language was going to hold me back.
However, luckily for me, the University of Leeds, where I was studying at the time, made it possible for any student, even people like me speaking only one language, to study abroad. I boarded a plane for Salzburg, Austria. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect of the experience ahead of me but I was prepared to accept the challenge.
The university was quite small but the classes were large. Also, Austrian students usually take five years to complete their courses, so studying there was somewhat more relaxing than at home. Austrian students go home quite often, too. Therefore, the foreign students had to socialise with each other quite a lot, which didn't help with our language skills.
Salzburg itself is a picture-postcard Austrian city. It is also famous for being the birthplace of Mozart and the setting for The Sound of Music. As a result, it is usually crowded with tourists. I also found that it doesn't have a lot of entertainment for young people, in comparison with Leeds.
There are, however, many advantages of living in Salzburg. For example, get on a train and you can he in Prague, Rome or Krakow within a matter of hours. By the end of my year in Salzburg, I had visited eight other countries in Europe.
After spending a year overseas, I went back to my courses in Leeds and I was much more focused on what I wanted to get out of my last year and more appreciative of the opportunity the university provided. The year in Salzburg really showed me that you get a lot more out of a place when you live there compared to when you are just travelling through. I’d recommend all students spend a year studying abroad if they can.
1.In the author’s opinion, what may have prevented his studying abroad
A.His not being old enough. B.His fearing the culture shock.
C.His becoming homesick easily. D.His not knowing a foreign language.
2.Compared with the University of Leeds, the university in Salzburg ________.
A.provides more social events B.has longer university years
C.has more foreign students D.offers more small classes
3.Which of the following is the advantage the author mentions about Salzburg
A.It's convenient for people to travel. B.It is a picture-postcard city.
C.It's the hometown of Mozart. D.It’s full of foreign tourists.
4.What did the author think of his experience of studying abroad
A.He benefited a lot from it. B.He thought it made no difference to him.
C.It was far from what he had expected. D.It badly affected his studies at home.

As an activist,Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) was often credited with leading the country’s civil rights movement.

Before long, President John F. Kennedy asked the US Congress to pass a civil rights bilU which would give all Americans equal access to public places. Unfortunately, MLK was killed while on a trip to Memphis,Tennessee in 1968,and did not live long enough to see it come true.

Evaluating Sources(来源) of Health Information

Desiree, a 4-year-old girl, was sobbing quietly over her father, Ken, who had died nine months earlier. She was hugging a photograph of her father with her fingers running around his face. “Daddy”, she said softly, “Why won’t you come back ”
Instead of gradually adjusting to her father’s death, Desiree refused to accept it. “Daddy will be home soon,” she’d tell her mother. “He’s at work.” When she played with her toy telephone, she pretended she was chatting with her father. “I miss you, Daddy,” she’d say, “When will you come back ” Desiree’s situation made her mother worried.
Days later, it was Ken’s birthday. “How will I send him a card ” Desiree asked her mother. “How about if we tie a letter to a balloon,” her mother said, “and send it up to heaven ” Desiree’s eyes immediately lit up.
Her mother took her to a store and Desiree picked out a balloon with HAPPY BIRTHDAY above a drawing of The Little Mermaid(美人鱼). Desiree and her father had often watched it. The child’s eyes shone as they were on the way to Ken’s grave. Then Desiree dictated a letter to her dad. “Tell him, ‘Happy birthday, I love you and miss you,’” she rattled off(快速说). “ ‘I hope you get this and can write to me on my birthday in January.’ ”
Her mother wrote the message and their address on a small piece of paper, which was then wrapped in plastic and tied to the end of the string on the balloon. Finally, Desiree released the balloon. For almost an hour, they watched the shining spot of silver grow smaller and smaller till disappear. “Now Dad’s going to write back to me,” Desiree declared confidently.
Every day since they’d released the balloon, Desiree had asked her mother, “Do you think Daddy has my balloon yet ” Several weeks passed, and she stopped asking.

Paragraph 1 :
One day, 3,000 miles away, Wade was on a duck hunt when suddenly something in the bush caught his eyes. Curious, he approached to find a silver balloon, with a piece of paper at the end of the string, wrapped in plastic. Taking it home, Wade read the touching lines to his wife Donna. She was deeply moved. With tears in her eyes, Donna decided to help Desiree. The couple went to buy a birthday card and a book of The Little Mermaid, and then she began to write a letter to Desiree.
Paragraph 2 :
Desiree’s fifth birthday came and later on the afternoon, a package arrived. Looking at the unfamiliar return address, Desiree’s mother was confused. Suddenly an idea struck her: the balloon! She opened the parcel and found a card with “For a Dear Daughter...” Her heart raced. She rushed to Desiree’s room and showed her the letter. “It’s from daddy!” Desiree jumped with joy, asking her mother to read it for her. “ ‘Happy birthday, my little angel ...” Her mother began.
