Can you imagine a cloud floating in the middle of your room Do you want to know what it feels like to fly like a bird Find your answers in Time Magazine’s 25 “Best Inventions”. Here, we have picked out the most interesting 4 inventions to share with you.
Talking Gloves
Ever felt confused by the sign language used by disabled(残疾的)people Here is the “helping hand” you need. Four Ukrainian students have created a pair of gloves that helps people with hearing and speech problems communicate with others. The gloves are equipped with sensors that recognize sign language and translate it into text on a smartphone. Then the smartphone changes the text to spoken words.
Google Glasses
Google Glasses are like a computer built into the frame of a pair of glasses. With its 1. 3-centimeter display, the glasses allow you to surf the Internet and make calls without even lifting a finger. The glasses also have a camera and GPS mapping system. Users can take and share photos, check maps and surf the Internet just by looking up, down, left and right.
Indoor Clouds
It’s not virtual. That’s a real world. Dutch artist Smilde managed to create a small but perfect white cloud in the middle of a room using a fog machine. But it required careful planning — the temperature, humidity(湿度)and lighting all had to be just right. Once everything was ready, the cloud formed in the air with the machine. But it only lasted for a short while.
Wingsuits
The suit fulfills your dreams of flying like a bird. Well, not exactly flying, but gliding(滑翔)through the air. It increases the surface area of the human body, which makes it easier for people to float in the air. Fliers wearing wingsuits can glide one kilometer in about 30 seconds.
21. Who will probably be the users of Talking Gloves
A. Disabled people. B. Normal people.
C. Trained people. D. Working people.
22. How can users of Google Glasses surf the Internet
A. By moving the mouse.
B. By tapping the keyboard.

Five years ago, when I taught art at a school in Seattle, I used Tinkertoys as a test at the beginning of a term to find out something about my students. I put a small set of Tinkertoys in front of each student, and said, “Make something out of the Tinkertoys. You have 45 minutes today — and 45 minutes each day for the rest of the week. ”
A few students hesitated to start. They waited to see what the rest of the class would do. Several others checked the instructions and made something according to one of the model plans provided. Another group built something out of their own imaginations.
Once I had a boy who worked experimentally with Tinkertoys in his free time. His constructions filled a shelf in the art classroom and a good part of his bedroom at home. I was delighted at the presence of such a student. Here was an exceptionally creative mind at work. His presence meant that I had an unexpected teaching assistant in class whose creativity would infect(感染)other students.
Encouraging this kind of thinking has a downside. I ran the risk of losing those students who had a different style of thinking. Without fail one would declare, “But I’m just not creative. ”
“Do you dream at night when you’re asleep ”
“Oh, sure. ”
“So tell me one of your most interesting dreams. ” The student would tell something wildly imaginative. Flying in the sky or in a time machine or growing three heads. “That’s pretty creative. Who does that for you ”
“Nobody. I do it. ”
“Really — at night, when you’re asleep ”
“Sure. ”
“Try doing it in the daytime, in class, okay ”
24. The teacher used Tinkertoys in class in order to .
A. know more about the students
B. make the lessons more exciting
C. raise the students’ interest in art
D. teach the students about toy design
25. What do we know about the boy mentioned in Paragraph 3
A. He liked to help his teacher.
B. He preferred to study alone.
C. He was active in class.
D. He was imaginative.
26. What does the underlined word “downside” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Mistake. B. Drawback.
C. Difficulty. D. Burden.
27. Why did the teacher ask the students to talk about their dreams
A. To help them to see their creativity.
B. To find out about their sleeping habits.
C. To help them to improve their memory.
D. To find out about their ways of thinking.

Years ago it was popular to speak of a generation gap, a disagreement between young people and their elders. Parents said that children did not show them proper respect and obedience(服从), while children complained that their parents did not understand them at all. What had gone wrong Why had the generation gap suddenly appeared Actually the generation gap has been around for a long time. Many people argue that a gap is built into the fabric(结构)of our society.
One important cause of the generation gap is the chance that young people have to choose their own ways of life. In more traditional societies, when children grow up, they are expected to live in the same area as their parents, to marry people that their parents know and agree to, and to continue the family occupation. In our society, young people often travel great distances for their education, move out of the family home at an early age, marry or live with people whom their parents have never met, and choose occupations different from those of their parents.
In our easily changing society, parents often expect their children to do better than they did: to find better jobs, to make more money, and to do all the things that they were unable to do. Often, however, the strong wish that parents have for their children is another cause of the disagreement between them. Often, they discover that they have very little in common with each other.
Finally, the speed at which changes take place in our society is another cause of the gap between the generations. In a traditional culture, elderly people are valued for their wisdom(智慧), but in our society, the knowledge of a lifetime may become out of date overnight. The young and the old seem to live in two very different worlds, separated by different skills and abilities. No doubt, the generation gap will continue to be a feature of our life for some time to come. Its causes are rooted in the freedom and changes of our society, and in the rapid speed at which society changes.
28. What is the text mainly about
A. The concept(概念)of generation gap.
B. The reasons for generation gap.
C. Ways to reduce generation gap.
D. Attitudes towards generation gap.
29. In modern society, young people often .
A. depend on their parents to make a life
B. live with their parents in the same area
C. ask their parents for the best advice
D. have very little in common with their parents
30. What can we infer from Paragraph 3
A. Parents should be strict with their children.
B. The generation gap is partly caused by the older generation.
C. Parents couldn’t do things well themselves.
D. The young never want to satisfy(使满意)their parents.
31. Which of the following also causes the generation gap
A. Parents are not strict enough with their children.
B. The young value the old too much for their wisdom.
C. Young people don’t have the knowledge of a lifetime.
D. The society develops too fast.
D
One of Britain’s most outstanding scientists says the growth in use of electronic tablets and smartphones is causing people to spend at least one hour less outdoors each day, so that they need to take regular vitamin D supplements(补充)to make up for the lack of sunlight they receive naturally.
Speaking at the Hay Literary Festival in Wales, geneticist Steve Jones said he himself was a follower to the cause and urged others to follow. “I never thought I would be a person who would take vitamin supplements; I always thought it was absolute nonsense. But now I take vitamin D every day. Today, because I knew the sun wasn’t going to shine, I took an extra one, ” he said.
Exposure to UV light from the sun is the major source of vitamin D. However, people are spending less and less time outdoors in many areas. The problem is particularly serious in Scotland. “The Scots are the palest people in the world...for their entire body systems are crying out for vitamin D, ” he said, adding that life expectancy in Scotland is two years shorter than in England or Wales. Multiple sclerosis(多发性硬化症), a medical condition which is often seen in northern Europe, is also higher in Scotland than in England.
Vitamin D helps with the absorption of Ca, which helps keep bones strong, and he said the fact that rickets, a bone disease, was making a comeback in Britain after nearly 50 years was another sign of how changing behavior patterns were bringing physical harm.
Jones admitted that concerns over the damaging effects on skin of long-time exposure to the sun were reasonable, but said sunlight was healthy and necessary for the human body, and could help in lowering blood pressure. “If you lie on the beach for an hour, you will drop your blood pressure by about 10 points, because it relaxes your blood vessels(血管). So, get out in the sun while we still can, ” he said.
32. How are people affected by the rise of technology according to the passage
A. They are more sensitive to sunlight.
B. They take more vitamin D supplements.
C. They get less vitamin D than before.
D. They become addicted to electronic games.
33. What’s Jones’ attitude towards taking vitamin D supplements
A. Skeptical. B. Cautious.
C. Worried. D. Supportive.
34. Why are the Scots the palest people in the world
A. Because they are in great need of sunlight.
B. Because they have short sunlight duration.
C. Because their blood pressure is very low.
D. Because they are easy to suffer multiple sclerosis.
35. What may be the best title for the passage
A. Get Out and Gain More Vitamin D
B. Head for the Beach and Enjoy Sunshine
C. Keep Away from Tablets and Phones
D. Say No to Vitamin D Supplements

Americans spend almost four hours a day on their phones. 36 Instagram is now a breeding ground(温床)for photo sharing, thanks especially to its story feature. Now people aren’t just posting their best pictures, but they’re sharing every step of their journey.
Take me for example — I blog(写博客)about travel for a living. I’m pretty much done with trip reports, but I still share my travels on Instagram Stories. During a trip to Turkey last summer, I realized quickly that I wasn’t seeing and experiencing things first-hand. 37 I had my phone in hand almost the entire time to record and share the “experience”.
There was one day on my trip when I decided to walk from the Bomonti area to Taksim Square. At first, I had my eyes glued to(盯住不放)the phone to navigate(导航)my way. Then I began taking pictures of interesting things and distractedly moving along. Then it hit me: This isn’t safe. Also, I’m not taking in all the sights and passing by great shops without looking at anything. 38
My arms were free to swing(摆动)at my sides and I made eye contact with people who smiled and said hello. I smelled the delicious wet burgers and stopped to grab one. 39 More importantly, I felt the energy of the city and took in all the sights and sounds. I don’t have recordings of most of it, but it lives in my memory. It was one of my favorite days of the trip — just walking through Istanbul on my own and feeling the city with all my senses.
Keeping our eyes glued to our screens, we’re missing out on the true beauty around us. 40 It has to be experienced through all five senses and spending too much of it looking at our phones, trying to share it with the world, ruins(毁坏)that.
A. Vacations are no exception.
B. We’re too absorbed in our journey.
C. Travel isn’t just experienced through the eyes.
D. So I put my phone away for the rest of the way.
E. I found a lovely scarf and bought it at a nice price.
F. I was viewing everything through my phone’s camera.
G. People travel to destinations just because they’re “Instafamous”.

Text 10
Pete and Ruth’s shop is one of the most popular supermarkets in the city today. Pete Johnson and Ruth Kelly went to college together. They first opened a little shop in 1989. They mainly sold drinks and snacks to college students. As the number of customers grew, Pete and Ruth decided to add more things to their store shelves. So a year later, the shop began to offer fresh fruits, vegetables, eggs, milk, and cheese, as well as many other food products. And while the business grew bigger and bigger, the size of the shop also grew. In 1995, Pete and Ruth borrowed some money from the bank and rented the space to open their supermarket. Suggested by a friend of Ruth, Ruth also opened a coffee shop inside the supermarket. She named it Ruth’s House, which also became one of the best coffee shops in the city.

“Sure. ”

B. They take more vitamin D supplements.
C. They get less vitamin D than before.
D. They become addicted to electronic games.
答案 C
解析细节理解题。根据第一段内容可知,平板电脑和智能手机使用的增长导致人们待在户外的时间很少,缺少阳光照射导致人们缺乏维生素D。故选C。
33. What’s Jones’ attitude towards taking vitamin D supplements
A. Skeptical. B. Cautious.
C. Worried. D. Supportive.
答案 D
解析观点态度题。根据第二段中的“geneticist Steve Jones said he himself was a follower to the cause and urged others to follow”以及Steve Jones说的话可知,他之前认为服用维生素补充剂是毫无意义的,但是现在每天都会服用维生素D,并且鼓励别人追随这一做法。因此可以推断他是支持服用维生素D补充剂的。故选D。
34. Why are the Scots the palest people in the world
A. Because they are in great need of sunlight.
B. Because they have short sunlight duration.
C. Because their blood pressure is very low.
D. Because they are easy to suffer multiple sclerosis.
答案 A
解析细节理解题。根据第三段中的“The Scots are the palest people in the world...for their entire body systems are crying out for vitamin D”可知,苏格兰人全身的系统都急需维生素D。再结合第三段第一句阐述的事实“太阳发出的紫外线是获取维生素D的主要来源”以及第三段中的“...people are spending less and less time outdoors in many areas. The problem is particularly serious in Scotland”可知,苏格兰人苍白的根源是他们花在户外晒太阳的时间越来越少,即他们急需太阳光照射。
