If there's one thing I can't stand people saying, it's, “I'm not good at anything … I don't have any talent.” I just don't buy that at all. To me, everyone has at least one talent, and while it sometimes takes you a lifetime to find, it does exist. There was a time when I didn't believe that. What changed my mind was a seemingly small event that took place in 1953.
At that time I was a high school student. I was a funny-looking skinny boy named Eugene Orowitz, who weighed barely 100 pounds. I was a good student, but as far as I was concerned, in just about every other department I was a loser. I wanted to fit in, to be someone and do something well. But I hadn't found anything I was good at. One sunny afternoon, our gym class went out to the school's running track. The teacher taught us all various track and field events. I was a loser in all of them. Then came the javelin (标枪). Suddenly something inside me began saying, "Try it! Try it!" I had to wait for my turn, though, trying not to look too eager. Finally, when everyone had had a chance to throw -the best throw going about 30 yards -I looked at the teacher.
"Hey, Orowitz, you want to try " he asked.
Embarrassed, I looked down, but managed to nod my head.
"Well, come on then," he said impatiently, and handed me the javelin. Behind me I could hear some of my classmates laughing. As I grasped the javelin in my hand, I was seized with a strange feeling-a new-found excitement. For some crazy reason, I was relaxed over what I was about to do, even though I'd never done it before. I raised the javelin over my head, took six quick steps and let the thing go. The same voice that had urged me to throw it, now told me it was a good throw.

In 1974,after filling out fifty applications, going through four interviews, and winning one offer, I took what I could get—a teaching job at a school at what I considered a distant wild area: western New Jersey. My characteristic optimism was alive only when I reminded myself that I would be doing what I had wanted to do since I was fourteen— teaching English.
School started, and I was teaching English. I worked hard, taking time off only to eat and sleep. And then there was my sixth-grade class—seventeen boys and five girls who were only six years younger than me. I had a problem long before I knew it. I was struggling in my work as a young idealistic teacher. I wanted to make literature come alive and to promote a love of the written words. The students wanted to throw spitballs and whisper dirty words in the back of the room.
In college I had been taught that a successful educator should ignore bad behavior. So I was confident that the bad behavior would disappear as I gave ray students positive attention. It sounds reasonable, but in fact that humans, particularly teenagers, rarely seems reasonable. By the time the oldprincipal of the school, known to be the strictest, most demanding, most quick to fire inexperienced teachers, came into the classroom to observe me, the students exhibited very little good behavior to praise.
He sat in the back of the room. The boys in the class were making animal noises, hitting each other while the girls filed their nails or read magazines. I just pretended it all wasn't happening, and went on lecturing and tried to ask some inspiring questions. The principal, sitting in the back of the classroom, seemed to be growing bigger and bigger. After twenty minutes he left, silently. Visions of unemployment marched before my eyes.
Paragraph 1:
After class, I took a deep breath and walked into his office.

I hurried to my classroom. It was my first day as a first-grade teacher. Filled with confidence, I hung up my jacket and sat at my desk. I couldn't wait for my students to arrive.
Everything had fallen into place so perfectly. During my senior year of college, I had been placed at a local elementary school to begin student teaching. I was assigned to an experienced kindergarten teacher with a professional manner. Mrs. Buckley ran an efficient classroom that was highly organized. Although I admired her abilities greatly, I couldn't help thinking that someday, when I had my own classroom, I would create a more relaxed environment in the class. I wouldn't make the children follow such a strict schedule.
As the weeks passed, Mrs. Buckley allowed me to take on greater responsibilities. She helped me a lot and a good relationship developed between us. At the end of my time at the school, a first-grade teacher unexpectedly retired. Mrs. Buckley actively recommended(推荐) me for the position. I was so grateful that I would have a position waiting for me directly after graduation. I would now be working alongside Mrs. Buckley and would teach many of the students from her kindergarten class.
On the morning of my first day, I sat at my desk, watching all the brightly-colored posters that decorated my classroom. Then I noticed a small white card from Mrs. Buckley. It simply read: "Dear Elizabeth, The beginning is difficult. Love, Kathleen." I felt a little disappointed since I had expected a card with some words of encouragement.
I throw the card into a desk drawer and decided not to think about it. Nothing was going to affect my enthusiasm.
Paragraph 1:
When the morning bell rang, I opened the door to twenty-four smiling faces.

When I was in seventh grade, my parents paid a tutor(家庭教师) forty dollars a week for her coming to my house and helping me with math. It ended up raising my marks from fifty to fifty-five.
I had to admit it was mainly my fault. Maybe I should have concentrated my math from the beginning. But studying math was a tough thing. Sitting on a chair to work on confusing math problems for two hours was a slow and painful process. During the process, I would fidget(坐立不安) and have many trips to the refrigerator in an attempt to get off that chair for at least five minutes.
During math tests, my teachers would always stay by my desk. My teachers and friends would frequently ask the question after tests,” How’s your math this time " So I became extremely afraid of math. While normal people of my age were scared of some insects and adventurous travels, I feared anything to do with numbers. The thought of a teacher picking on me in class made me feel scared. The red marks on the test paper were also terrifying.
My fear of math got worse in ninth grade. Every report card I received from my new math teacher Ms Robbins had the comment to encourage me, "I'm glad to do what I can to help you.” But I couldn't tell her the real reason why I didn't ask for help-I didn’t want to be considered stupid. Every question I had was, in my opinion at the time, something that the whole class had understood but I. So instead, I ended up not caring about anything related to math, without working hard on math at all. And I concluded everything would work out in the end
Eventually, my classmates and I took the final test that would lead to our graduation from middle school and stepping into high school. Days after the exam-- on a rainy summer morning, Ms. Robbins called me.
Paragraph 1:
With worry and uncertainty, I entered her office.

“Now, parents and students separate into two groups. You will be reunited at the end of the campus tour. ”
Groups of incoming freshmen happily left their parents upon hearing this announcement. I was less than thrilled about starting college, let alone leaving my mother's side to tour the campus with other freshmen; I felt a little anxious.
We followed the senior tour guide. The other freshmen chatted and made casual introductions as I dragged behind. How could I have believed I was ready for this After all, it had only been a few months since I left the hospital. I was feeling better for the first time in years. But college. . .
My thinking was interrupted by a sweet female voice, "Hi, I'm Jennifer." "I'm Lauren," I replied. "Where do you prefer to live At home or on campus " she smiled. "I'm not sure, "I said. "You should live on campus! It will be a lot of fun!" she said. Before I could reply, the tour guide announced it was time to create our schedules and select the courses we wanted to take.
We crowded into the Student Activity Center. Three seniors handed out thick course bulletins (课程公告) and forms that needed to be filled out. All around me, the sounds of turning papers and writing sounded like those given by an alarm clock. Others seemed to be moving through the process quickly but I hadn't even opened my course catalog (目录).
"Focus, "I told myself. "Just read through the catalog and find the courses you like and a schedule that works. "Psychology A or B, Geology 101, English, History, sections 1, 2, 3. . . The list went on and on.
I panicked and almost started to cry. How was I supposed to know how to complete it I was just relearning how to live in the real world, and they wanted me to make a schedule. How I wished someone could help me.
Paragraph 1:
Soon, other freshmen were handing in their forms.

答案以及解析
一、
答案:
I watched as the spear took off. My heart quickened constantly as the javelin drew a beautiful curve in the azure sky. “31 yards!” the teacher’s astonished voice hit my eardrum directly, making all the sounds fade into total silence. Contrary to their previous laughs, my classmates looked at me with adoration. It was the best throw that put me to the top of the list. The teacher announced excitedly, “If it hadn’t been for the Javelin, the skinny boy who named Euenge Orowitz would never have found his talent,” When the teacher decided to send it home with me as a gift, I gave him a big hug, shrieking with excitement.
That night I took the javelin home with me. I seized it desperately as if it was my lifeline. No sooner had the sports meeting ended than I was chosen to be a member of the track team. Since then, I have participated in various races and gotten excellent scores in the javelin competition. Although I’m a professional javelin thrower now, I’ll never forget that sunny afternoon in 1953, which let me approach my own talent. If you’re still trapped in the worry of your lack of confidence, let the thing go and try to challenge yourself right now, like my first flying javelin in the azure sky.

Paragraph 1:
After class, I took a deep breath and walked into his office. I was too nervous to say a word, thinking that I would be fired. To my surprise, the principal didn't glare at me with burning eyes. Instead, he patiently pointed out my problems and told me that as a teacher I shouldn't have ignored the bad behavior of my students. We discussed how I should deal with the situation I met. And the orincipal also told me some effective measures to guide students. I was encouraged and full of confidence when leaving his office.
Paragraph 2:
Fifteen years later, I am driving on that winding road to the same school. I still work at that school, not as a teacher, but as a principal. The old principal had retired several years ago. But I always remember what he told me that day, and I pass that down to new teachers coming to this school. Without him, I wouldn't have grown to be a successful educator.

Paragraph 1:
When the morning bell rang, I opened the door to twenty-four smiling faces. I was determined to give them a classroom environment that was more relaxed. However, my plan proved to be a failure, as I quickly lost control of my little students. Giving them a choice of where to sit turned into mass confusion and several students burst into tears as their feelings got hurt and desks and chairs became mixed up.
Paragraph 2:
Finally, the class was over. I fell into my chair, exhausted. My mind was filled with images of my poorly organized classroom. I opened my desk and saw the white card from Mrs. Buckley. She was right. The beginning was difficult. After calming down a little while, I realized when we try something new, we will not be as skillful as a master. Skills take time to develop. Although my first day of teaching was far from perfect, at that moment I knew I was only at the beginning of my journey and tomorrow would be a new day.

Seeing that, Ms. Robbins came to comfort and encourage me, and said she'd like to offer any help if necessary. After leaving her office, I was anxious, wondering how to tell the bad news to my parents
Paragraph 2

Ms. Robbins was happy that I finally decided to work hard on math. Thanks to her patient guidance, I made great progress and was not afraid of math any more. Paragraph 1:
Soon, other freshmen were handing in their forms. Many of them rushed out to meet their parents. I couldn’t breathe and was feeling anxious. My head was pounding. Moments later, I was crying. And several students started to stare at me. One of the seniors in charge walked over to my table. “What’s the matter ” she asked impatiently. “I... I can’t do this!” I said. “All you have to do is make your schedule, just like everybody else,” she said, clearly annoyed.
Paragraph 2:
Then, I felt a warm hand on my shoulder. I looked back and found Jennifer standing behind me. “Everything is alright,” she told the senior. “I’ll help her.” The senior walked away. “What’s wrong, sweetie ” Jennifer asked. Hearing Jennifer’s kind words, I cried even harder, saying, “It’s just too much!” Then Jennifer put her arm around me and said, “Let me instruct you.” She then guided me through the process step by step until I completed my schedule. Later, when saying goodbye, we made a promise to keep in touch.
