Store Scent(香味)
What is the first thing you nitice when you walk into a shop The products displayed(展示) at the entrance Or the soft background music
But have you ever notice the smell Unless it is bad, the answer is likely to be no. But while a shop’s scent may not be outstanding compared with sights and sounds, it is certainly there. And it is providing to be an increasing powerful tool in encouraging people to purchase.
A brand store has become famous for its distinctive scent which floats through the fairly dark hall and out to the entrance, via scent machines. A smell may be attractive but it may not just be used for freshening air. One sports goods company once reported that when it first introduced scent into its stores, customers’ intension to purchase increased by 80 percent.
When it comes to the best shopping streets in Pairs, scent is just as important to a brand’s success as the quality of its window displays and goods on slaes. That is mainly because shopping is a very different experience to what it used to be.
Some years ago, the focus for brand name shopping was on a few people with sales assistants’ disproving attitude and don’t-touch-what-you-can’t-afford displays. Now the rise of electronic commerce (e-commerce) has opened up famous brands to a wider audience. But while e-shops can use sights and sounds, only bricks-and-mortar stores(实体店) can offer a full experience from the minute customers step through the door to the moment they leave. Another brand store seeks to be much more than a shop, but rather a destination. And scent is just one way to achieve this.
Now, a famous store uses complex man-made smell to make sure that the soft scent of baby powder floats through the kid department, and coconut(椰子) scent in the swimsuit section. A department store has even opened a new lab, inviting customers on a journey into the store’s windows to smell books, pots and drawers, in search of their perfect scent.

A.show the advantages of brick-and-mortar stores
B.urge shop assistants to change their attitude

D.a target that a store expects to meet
4.The main purpose of the passage is to ______.

The oddness(奇妙) of life in space never quite goes away. Here are some examples.
First consider something as simple as sleep. Its position presents its own challenges. The main question is whether you want your arms inside or outside the sleeping bag. If you leave your arms out, they float free in zero gravity, often giving a sleeping astronaut the look of a funny ballet(芭蕾) dancer. “I’m an inside guy,” Mike Hopkins says, who returned from a six-month tour on the International Space Station. “I like to be wrapped up.”
On the station, the ordinary becomes strange. The exercise hike for the American astronauts has no handlebars(车把). It also has no seat. With no gravity, it’s just as easy to pedal(踩踏板) violently. You can watch a movie while you pedal by floating a microcomputer anywhere you want. But station residents have to be careful about staying in one place too long. Without gravity to help circulate air, the carbon dioxide you exhale(呼气) has a tendency to form an invisible(隐形的) cloud around your head. You can end up with what astronauts call a carbon-dioxide headache.
Leroy Chiao,54,an American retired astronaut after four flights, describes what happens even before you float out of your seat. “Your inner ear thinks you’re falling. Meanwhile your eyes are telling you you’re standing straight. That can be annoying—that’s why some people feel sick. 99 Within a couple of days- truly terrible days for some astronauts' brains learn to ignore the panicky signals from the inner ear,and space sickness disappears.
Space travel can be so delightful but at the same time invisibly(看不见地) dangerous. For instance, astronauts lose bone mass. That’s why exercise is considered so vital that National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA) puts il right on the workday schedule. The focus on fitness is as much about science and the future as it is about keeping any individual astronaut healthy. NASA is worried about two things: Recovery time once astronauts return home, and, more importantly, how to maintain strength and fitness for the two and a half years or more that it would take to make a round-trip to Mars.
1.What is the major challenge to astronauts when they sleep in space
A.Deciding on a proper sleep position. B.Choosing a comfortable sleeping bag.
C.Seeking a way to fall asleep quickly. D.Finding a right time to go to sleep.
2.The astronauts will suffer from a carbon-dioxide headache when ________.
A.they circle around on their bikes B.they use microcomputers without a stop
C.they exercise in one place for a long time D.they watch a movie while pedaling
3.Some astronauts feel sick on the station during the first few days because ___________.
A.their senses stop working B.they have to stand straight
C.they float out of their seats unexpectedly D.their brains receive contradictory messages
4.One of NASA's major concerns about astronauts is ______________.
A.how much exercise they do on the station
B.how they can remain healthy for long in space
C.whether they can recover after returning home
D.whether they are able to go back to the station
D
On November 19, Peggy Whitson, along with Oleg Novitskiy and Thomas Pesquet, landed on the International Space Station(ISS). In doing so. America’s most experienced female astronaut(宇航员) became the oldest woman in space, breaking the record set by Barbara Morgan who reached the ISS at 55.
Whitson, who has already spent many days in space, is no stranger to records. She was the first female pilot(飞行员) to serve as chief of the astronaut office at the Johnson Space Centre and the first woman to command the ISS in 2007—2008. She will set another first when she takes the ISS lead again this time.
Besides, Whitson's latest six month stay at the ISS will push her beyond 534 days in space, breaking the US record set in September by 58-year-old Jeffrey Williams. Also, her six spacewalks, totaling 39 hours, 46 minutes, are second only to fellow US astronaut Sunita Williams, who has done seven spacewalks, totaling 50 hours, 40 minutes.
Whitson celebrated her 57th birthday while still on the ISS. The great woman who will have spent nearly a year and a half of her life in zero gravity when she returns to the earth, believes her age and experience make this task easier. That's because she knows what to expect on a space flight and how to deal with the urgency of tasks on the ISS.
While Whitson is the oldest female in spaces she is not the oldest astronaut. That honour belongs to John Glenn, the first American to travel round the earth. In 1988, at the age of 77, he also became the oldest man in space.
1.What can we learn about Peggy Whitson
A.She was born in the 1940s. B.She has set more than one record.
C.She has spent over 534 days in space. D.She is in charge of the ISS all the time
2.Who has done the most spacewalks
A.Peggy Whitson. B.Barbara Morgan. C.Jeffrey Williams. D.Sunita Williams.
3.What helps Peggy Whitson easily deal with her task on the ISS
A.Her cool head. B.Her rich experience. C.Her high intelligence.D.Her family’s help.
4.What might be the best title for the text
A.The Oldest Woman in Space B.Women Can Do As Well as Men
C.The Life of a Female Astronaut D.The Most Famous Woman in the World

My mother was a supporter of physical punishment, but for all her talking she has never spanked(打屁股) my siblings and me. Instead she found ways of punishment that left a more lasting memory than giving us a spanking. One of the most memorable occasions occurred when I was four.
In the early 70’s my mother attended college during the day and I was in daycare. One day at daycare I watched an extremely tired mother attempt to pick up her daughter. The little girl asked, “Momma, are we going to McDonald’s for dinner ” The mother replied, "Honey, not tonight. Momma has to run a few errands (差事) and then we have to go home and cook dinner for Daddy.” “But I wanna go, “Susie, I said not tonight. Maybe, if you are a good girl, we can go tomorrow." Susie immediately dropped to the floor, kicking and screaming, “I want to go to McDonald's.”
No amount of pleading (恳求) or scolding her mother tried stopped Susie's tantrum(发脾气). Finally her mother gave in, “Okay, Susie, let’s go to McDonald's. "Susie stopped yelling and grabbed her mother’s hand and they left. To say I was amazed would be inaccurate, I was delighted that anything I wanted could be had by throwing a tantrum.
That day my mother picked me up early from daycare because we were going to a store to purchase some New Year items. I was excited by the lights and decorations, and as we walked through the toy section on the way to the counter, I saw a toy I had to have. It was a white and red telephone whose bells rang as it was pulled along on a string. Looking lovingly up at my mother I asked, “Mama, can I have that telephone ”
She replied, “Baby, not now, but if you are a good girl, maybe grandpa will bring it to you.” “But, Mama, I want that telephone right now.” Her eyes narrowed and her hand tightened on mine. “Becky, you can’t have that telephone today, but if you misbehave, you can have a spanking.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
By now we were standing in the long holiday line to pay the bill, and I figured it was a good chance.

A.答案:1.C; 2.C; 3.B
根据第一部分中“It will be available in hard copy at bookstores throughout Canada and the United States. ”可知在加拿大和美国的书店可以买到I Love Hate, But I Hate When I Do Not Love 的 hard copy,故选C.
根据Into the Light中"Cover Price: $40. 00 Sale Price: $ 12. 00" 可知如果从网站上买这本书,可以节省40-12 = 28,故选C。
根据Conquering Fear中“They’ll tell you their stories and explain how they managed to look their fears and take that step beyond the fear." 可知书中人物们会解释他们是如何看待自己的恐惧,并超越恐惧的。这本书适合胆小的孩子阅读,故选B。
B.答案:1.B; 2.A; 3.C; 4.D1.
根据第二段“And it is providing to be an increasing powerful tool in encouraging people to purchase”可知,此句中的it指的是前面的scent.
根据第五段“while e-shops …only bricks-and-mortar stores (实体店) can offer a full experience”一句来判断,作者的倾向非常明显,认为实体店能提供完成购物体验,即强调传统实体店的优势。故选A。
But while e-shops can use sights and sounds, only bricks-and-mortar stores can offer a full experience from the minute customers step through the door to the moment they leave. 转折连词But后的while引导让步状语从句,主句的主语是only bricks-and-mortar stores, can offer作谓语, a full experience 作宾语, from...to...“从……到……”。
C.答案:1.A; 2.C; 3.D; 4.B
根据第二段中的“Its position presents its own challenges."可知,合适的睡觉姿势对于太空中的宇航员来说是主要的挑战.
2.细节理解题。根据第四段最后句可知,在一个地方待太长时间就会引起头疼。
3.推理判断题。根据第四段中的“Your inner ear thinks you're falling. Meanwhile your eyes are telling you you're standing straight. That can be annoying —that's why some people feel sick.”
D.答案:1.B; 2.D; 3.B; 4.A
根据第三段中的“Also, her six spacewalks, totaling 39 hours. 46 minutes, are second only to fellow US astronaut Sunita Williams, who has done seven spacewalks, totaling 50 hours, 40 minutes. ”可知,Sunita Williams 完成的太空行走最多。
3.细节理解题。根据第四段中的 “believes her age and experience make this task easier”可知,B项正确。

Good morning, everyone! I feel delighted to share some of my views here. Being a better self, I think, means more than being excellent in study but being an all-round person.

Then, based on self recognition, we need to take actions to enhance what we are good at and gain experience from our failures. 第二节
答案:
By now we were standing in the long holiday line to pay the bill, and I figure it was a good chance. I lay down on the ground and began screaming, “I want that telephone,” over and over again. Weary Christmas shoppers looked as my mother calmly said, “Becky, you'd better get up by the count of three or else. One…Two…Three.” Nothing. I was still in full tantrum. So, then she lay down beside me on the floor, and began kicking and screaming, “I want a new car, I want a new house, I want some jewelry, I want…” Shocked, I stood up.
“Mama, stop. Mama, get up.” I tearfully pleaded. She stood, and brushed herself off. At first stunned, the others waiting in line began to sporadically clap, and before I knew it, they were cheering and laughing and patting my mother on her back. She blushed and took a little bow and the next thirty minutes in line was pure misery for me as various parents leaving the store, shake their heads at me and say with a smile, “Your mom got you good. I bet you’ll never try that again.” And I didn’t, because it left a lasting mental picture more effective.
