At thirteen, I was diagnosed(诊断) with a kind of attention disorder. It made school difficult for me. When everyone else in the class was focusing on tasks, I could not.
In my first literature class, Mrs Smith asked us to read a story and then write on it within 45 minutes. I raised my hand right away and said, "Mrs Smith, the doctor said I have attention disorder. I might not be able to do it." She glanced down at me through her glasses, "You are not different from your classmates, young man."
I tried, but I didn't finish the writing when the bell rang. I had to take it home. In the quietness of my bedroom, a story suddenly became clear to me. It was about a blind person, Louis Braille. He lived in a time when the blind couldn't get much education. But Louis didn't give up. Instead, he created a reading system of raised dots(点), which opened up a whole new world of knowledge to the blind.
Wasn't I the "blind" in my class, being made to learn like the "sighted" students My thoughts spilled out and my pen started to dance. I completed the task within 40 minutes. Indeed, I was not different from others; I just needed a quieter place. If Louis could find his way out of his problems, why should I ever give up
I didn't expect anything when I handed in my paper to Mrs Smith, so it was quite a surprise when it came back to me the next day-with an "A" on it. At the bottom of the paper were these words: See what you can do when you keep trying.
1.Why was the author unable to finish the task in class

3.What helped the author finish his paper
A.His parents’ help. B.Mrs Smith’s words.
C.Louis Braille’s story. D.His classmates’ encouragement.
4.What did Mrs Smith’s words in the last paragraph mean
A.The disabled should be treated with respect.
B.Everyone needs a hand when faced with trouble.
C.Teachers can help open up a new world to students.
D.One can find his way out of difficulties with efforts.

A new collection of photos brings an unsuccessful Antarctic voyage back to life.
Frank Hurley's pictures would be outstanding—undoubtedly first-rate photo-journalism—if they had been made last week. In fact, they were shot from 1914 through 1916, most of them after a disastrous shipwreck(海难), by a cameraman who had no reasonable expectation of survival. Many of the images were stored in an ice chest, under freezing water, in the damaged wooden ship.
The ship was the Endurance, a small, tight, Norwegian-built three-masters that was intended to take Sir Ernest Shackleton and a small crew of seamen and scientists, 27 men in all, to the southernmost shore of Antarctica's Weddell Sea. From that point Shackleton wanted to force a passage by dog sled(雪橇) across the continent. The journey was intended to achieve more than what Captain Robert Falcon Scott had done. Captain Scott had reached the South Pole early in 1912 but had died with his four companions on the march back.
As writer Caroline Alexander makes clear in her forceful and well-researched story The Endurance, adventuring was even then a thoroughly commercial effort. Scott's last journey, completed as he lay in a tent dying of cold and hunger, caught the world's imagination, and a film made in his honour drew crowds. Shackleton, a onetime British merchant-navy officer who had got to within 100 miles of the South Pole in 1908, started a business before his 1914 voyage to make money from movie and still photography. Frank Hurley, a confident and gifted Australian photographer who knew the Antarctic, was hired to make the images, most of which have never before been published.
1. What do we know about the photos taken by Hurley
A. They were made last week. B. They showed undersea sceneries.
C. They were found by a cameraman. D. They recorded a disastrous adventure.
2. Who reached the South Pole first according to the text
A. Frank Hurley. B. Ernest Shackleton.
C. Robert Falcon Scott. D. Caroline Alexander.
3. What does Alexander think was the purpose of the 1914 voyage
A. Artistic creation. B. Scientific research.
C. Money making. D. Treasure hunting.
4. What can we infer about the scene where Scott was lying in the tent
A. It was encouraging. B. It was exciting.
C. It was very sad. D. It was disappointing.

The well-known adventurer (冒险家) and explorer Steve Fossett, born in 1944 in America, was famous for his extraordinary efforts to set world records in flying, ballooning and sailing. He set or broke over 100 records in five different sports, many of which are still held. Many of his most extraordinary adventures were as a pilot. He once said that he did not like risks. This might sound strange considering his activities. But he said what he tried to do was to reduce risk with careful planning, technological development and the help of the best scientists and other experts. In 2007, during a short- distance flight, his plane disappeared and he died at the age of 63.
In 1903 Benjamin Spock was born in America. After he attended Yale University he joined a sports team that competed in rolling boats, which in 1924 won the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Paris. He used to work at a camp for disabled children for three summers during his years at Yale. And the experience probably led to his decision to enter Yale Medical School, and finally completing his medical degree at Columbia University in New York. From 1933 he worked as a baby doctor, trying to fit the theories (理论) about how children develop with what mothers told him about their children. During the 1950s, Dr Spock became famous. He wrote articles for magazines, appeared on TV programmes, taught at universities and gave speeches to talk to parents about their concerns (担心). Benjamin died in 1998 at 95. Yet his advice still continues to affect the lives of millions of children and their parents.
An 80-year-old Japanese mountain climber who has had four heart surgeries (手术) reached the top of Mount Qomolangma on Thursday, becoming the oldest to climb up the world's highest mountain on May 23, 2013. It was Yuichiro Miura. As a famous adventurer, he skied down Mount Qomolangma from the South Col in 1970, a deed that became the subject of a documentary. He has since skied down the highest mountains on each of the seven continents, following
the tradition of his late father, who skied down Europe's Mont Blanc at 99. "If you wish strongly and have courage and endurance, then you can get to the summit (顶峰) of your dream," Miura said.
1.What can be inferred from Steve Fossett's story
A.No amount of planning can prevent the possibility of risk in life.
B.Careful planning and high technology can help reduce risk to zero.
C.The scientists and other experts contribute to Steve Fossett's death.
D.The risk in short-distance flights can hardly be avoided completely.

Everyone might be a kind person, but outside our family and friends, we don’t often practice kindness. We work on being kind to our families, our friends, and hopefully ourselves , but being kind to a complete stranger is odd.
Back in February of 2018, I decided that I wanted to invite complete strangers over for dinner for Valentine’s day. On February 13, I went to Washington Square Park and began my quest. I was definitely nervous, but kept reminding myself that the worst that could happen was I’d get a bunch of no’s. The world wouldn’t stop spinning. I wouldn’t lose a limb (上肢). I’d simply get a “no,” and that would be it.
Out of around 50 people that I asked, over 20 said yes and gave me their phone numbers. Later that day, I texted every single one of them. Fourteen didn’t reply. Six said they couldn’t make it. Two confirmed (and one of them was bringing his roommate, making it three definite yeses).
Well, I was a little disappointed, as I expected more people to reply, but I couldn’t complain. It’s always easier to say yes in person and then refuse someone via text. Nevertheless, I wanted to try and get a few more people. I went on Instagram and started looking through my Instagram followers.
I found a couple of people who were in their mid-20s, seemed sweet, and lived in New York. I directly messaged them and hoped for the best. One said she couldn’t make it. Three people confirmed. Perhaps this wasn’t going to be a failed mission after all — six people were coming over! Oh, and one cute pup too, as one of the girls whom I approached at Washington Square Park was bringing her dog.

Finally, the day came, Anxious but excited, I spent the whole day cleaning the house and preparing the food. With everything ready, all guests arrived one by one. Within the next hour and a half, I had six complete strangers laughing, eating, and drinking at my apartment. Music was playing, the conversation was flowing, and new friendships were being formed. It was incredible. One of the people, whom I messaged on Instagram, told me this was one of the most fun New York City experiences he'd ever had. All enveloped in a curtain of darkness, it was time to say goodbye.
When everyone had left, I sat down and processed what had just happened. I couldn’t believe that 48 hours before I didn't know any of these people, and now we were all laughing and talking like we'd always been friends. It was a really enjoyable and unforgettable experience for me. It also made me realize that doing something kind for strangers isn't awkward but meaningful. Whether it's paying it forward with a cup of coffee or simply smiling at a stranger, random acts of kindness do make the world a little better (173 words)
