When her five daughters were young, Helene An always told them that there was strength in unity (团结). To show this, she held up one chopstick, representing oneperson. Then she easily broke it into two pieces. Next, she tied several chopsticks together, representing a family. She showed the girls it was hard to break the tied chopsticks. This lesson about family unity stayed with the daughters as they grew up.
Helene An and her family own a large restaurant business in California. However, when Helene and her husband Danny left their home inVietnamin 1975, they didn't have much money. They moved their family to San Francisco. There they joined Danny's mother, Diana, who owned a small Italian sandwich shop. Soon afterwards, Helene and Diana changed the sandwich shop into a small Vietnamese restaurant. The five daughters helped in the restaurant when they were young. However, Helene did not want her daughters to always work in the family business because she thought it was too hard.
Eventually the girls all graduated from college and went away to work for themselves, but one by one, the daughters returned to work in the family business. They opened new restaurants in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Even though family members sometimes disagreed with each other, they worked together to make the business successful. Daughter Elisabeth explains, "Our mother taught us that to succeed we must have unity, and to have unity we must have peace. Without the strength of the family, there is no business."

On a hill 600 feet above the surrounding land, we watch the lines of rain move across the scene, the moon rise over the hills, and the stars appear in the sky. The views invite a long look from a comfortable chair in front of the wooden house.
Every window in our wooden house has a view, and the forest and lakes seldom look the same as the hour before. Each look reminds us where we are.
There is space for our three boys to play outside, to shoot arrows, collect tree seeds, build earth houses and climb trees.
Our kids have learned the names of the trees, and with the names have come familiarity and appreciation. As they tell all who show even a passing interest, maple (枫树) makes the best fighting sticks and white pines are the best climbing trees.
The air is clean and fresh. The water from the well has a pleasant taste, and it is perhaps the healthiest water our kids will ever drink. Though they have one glass a day of juice and the rest is water, they never say anything against that.
The seasons change just outside the door. We watch the maples turn every shade of yellow and red in the fall and note the poplars’ (杨树) putting out the first green leaves of spring. The rainbow smelt fills the local steam as the ice gradually disappears, and the wood frogs start to sing in pools after being frozen for the winter. A family of birds rules our skies and flies over the lake.

A.The scenes are colorful and changeable.
B.There are many windows in the wooden house.

A.To describe the beauty of the scene around the house.
B.To introduce her children’s happy life in the forest.
C.To show that living in the forest is helpful.
D.To share the joy of living in the nature.

If you were in Xi’an in Shaanxi province on April 18,you might feel like you were back in ancient China. There were catwalk .shows and traditional music concerts held by people wearing traditional Chinese clothing,or huafu. Huafu fans from across the country gathered
there to take pictures and post them online for a huafu photo contest, which will last until May 18.
People were doing this to celebrate a new national holiday—the first-ever China Huafu Day. It is organized by the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League ( CCCYL), which aims to encourage young Chinese to take pride in traditional clothing, as well as classic Chinese culture.
The CCCYL chose the third day of the third month of the Chinese lunar calendar as China Huafu Day. This year, it fell on April 18. This day is said to be the birthday of the Yellow Emperor. “China is becoming a leading power in the world, and the Chinese public feels more confident about its traditional culture,” said Chen Chuyu, leader of a Beijing-based hanfu institution. “Wearing traditional clothing might be an interesting way of showing how they feel about this."

I couldn’t even sort through the first box of our dog Bama’s toys without bursting into tears. My husband, Alan, found me sitting on the floor, holding our dog’s favorite toy. He gently pulled me to my feet. "It’s okay, Lisa," he said. "I’ll put these away. Why don’t you go outside and get some air " I nodded.
It had been a few months since our beloved Bama had passed away. Alan and I didn’t have children. Our boxer(拳狮犬) was our baby. After Bama’s death, we couldn’t bring ourselves to go through his toys to decide what to keep. I told myself I’d do it when I was ready. Apparently, I still wasn’t.
Now I sat on my front porch(门廊) and sobbed(抽泣,哭泣). Friends and family had suggested we get another dog, but Alan and I dismissed(放弃) the idea. We couldn’t go through that kind of heartbreak(心碎) again.
I gazed out over the yard. Across the street was a dog. A boxer. Was he real or just my wishful imagination I blinked(眨眼). The boxer was still there. We locked eyes. He came across the street, straight toward me. Hesitantly, I offered my hand. He sniffed(嗅) it eagerly then he licked(舔) me. I let out a surprised laugh. He pushed his head into my lap(大腿) to be petted.
This dog was younger than Bama, smaller. He was well-fed and well-dressed. He wore a collar(项圈) but had no ID. I knew he must belong to someone in the neighborhood, but I’d never seen another boxer around. I would have remembered if I had.
"Where did you come from " I asked the dog, scratching(挠) him behind the ears.
He just sat there at ease. He didn’t seem lost. Just as if he were dropping by for a visit.
"Alan!" I called. "You have to come see this!"
Alan joined me, and we sat together in awe for a moment. Then the boxer got up and slowly ran off .

第二节
答案:
Paragraph 1:
The next day, there was a strange scratching at the door. I opened it to find my unexpected guest—the mystery boxer, who seemed to still remember me. He came over lightly and licked my hand, as if to erase my painful memories. Seeing him follow me from room to room, I gradually felt the ache in my heart lessen. I suddenly realized that I could now pass Bama’s favorite toys to my guest. So each day I would stand at the front door, waiting for the happy moment when my guest came and played with the toys.
Paragraph 2:
A week later, a young man I’d never seen before came in to visit. The man said his family had just moved to the neighborhood. He asked me if I happened to see a dog, a boxer recently. I said "Yes" and told him actually "my guest" had been paying me regular visits. He looked embarrassed and then apologized for the trouble his cutie caused for me. I told him there was no need to apologize and actually he was a big help in working through my grief. It has been three years since that day. Now Bama’s toys don’t just sit in the room, gathering dust.
