伦敦交通部门的失物招领处
在英国首都(capital)伦敦，交通部门设立的失物招领处位于著名的贝克街(Baker Street)，也就是小说家柯南·道尔塑造的侦探人物——夏洛克·福尔摩斯(Sherlock Holmes)所住的街道。失物招领处的电脑系统就叫“夏洛克(Sherlock)”。
这里存放的物品已堆积成山。据悉，这些物品均是人们遗落在公交车、火车等交通工具上的，被别人捡到(pick up)后送到失物招领处，招领处对其仔细分类并妥善保存，等待失主认领。这些遗失物品的数量之
多令人诧异。其中，书有5.1万余册，雨伞(umbrella)约1.2万把，衣物约3.5万件。此外，较为贵重的物品约有2.9万件，包括钱包(wallet)、相机(camera)以及手机(mobile phone)等。令人惊讶的是，竟然还有假肢、拐杖、防毒面具、沙发床、除草机等千奇百怪的失物，这让负责分类的工作人员颇为头疼。
由于失物招领处空间有限，失主必须在3个月内认领失物，并且要支付一定的手续费。如果3个月后失物仍无人认领，就会被拍卖，拍卖收入则用于招领处的日常开支。
