阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A篇
My Favorite Books
Jo Usmar is a writer for Cosmopolitan and co-author of the This Book Will series of lifestyle
books. Here she picks her top reads.
Matilda
Roald Dahl
I once wrote a paper on the influence of fairy tales on Roald Dahl's writing and it gave me a new appreciation for his strange and delightful words. Matilda's battles with her cruel parents and
the bad headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, are equally funny and frightening, but they’re also aspirational(励志的).
After Dark
Haruki Murakami
It's about two sisters-Eri, a model who either won't or can't stop sleeping, and Mari, a young student. In trying to connect to her sister, Mari starts changing her life and discovers a world of
“night people” who are hiding secrets.
Gone Girl
Gillian Flynn
There was a bit of me that didn't want to love this when everyone else on the planet did, but the horror(恐怖的)story is great. There’s stress and anxiety from the beginning as Nick and Amy battle for your support. It's a real crime novel and the frustration(挫败)when you realize what's
going on is unbelievably enjoyable.
The Stand
Stephen King
This is an excellent fantasy novel from one of the best storytellers around the world. After a serious flu outbreak wipes out 99.4% of the world's population, a battle starts between good and
evil among those left. Randall Flagg is one of the frightening characters ever.

答案:1-3:CCD
B篇
I love winter birds and I love photographing them in snow. I admit that I'm a fair-weather
bird watcher. Worse,I'm a lazy, fair-weather bird watcher. I don't like weather extremes, so
when it's very hot or really cold, it is hard to get me to leave the comfortable home. In summer, I only photograph hummingbirds(蜂鸟) in my yard, and in winter, I try to only go out on relatively mild(温和的)days. Most of my bird pictures are done within an hour's drive of my hometown of Elmira. So it's aIl about finding a balance that works.
The winter of 2018 was a great period for snowy owls(雪鸮) here in Woolwich Township.
One day in early January, I was on my way home from work when I noticed a beautiful snowy owl sitting in a tree right at the crossing. I pulled over to admire him, and then kept heading home unwillingly.
Two hundred meters or so down the road, there were two more snowy owls in a field by a fence, and in the next field over, another on top of a fence post. I couldn't find words to express my feelings at that moment. Thus I rushed home, took my camera and went right back out to get some pictures. It was one of the most magical local birding moments I've ever experienced.
When I'm looking for excellent opportunities to photograph snowy owls and other birds without spending dozens of hours searching for them, I head to the Canadian Raptor Conservancy(CRC) or the Mountsberg Raptor Centre. I've taken so many photos that I've lost count.
( )4. What factor has the most effect on whether the author goes out to photograph birds or not
A.Road conditions.
B. Personal emotions.
C.Weather conditions.
D. Time arrangement.
( )5. How did the author feel when he saw the snowy owls on his way home
A.Sad.
B.Excited.
C.Untouched.
D.Proud.
( )6.What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 4 refer to
A.Opportunities.
B.Moments.
C.Pictures.
D.Birds.
( )7. What can we infer about the author
A. The author only photographs snowy owls.
B. The author can take excellent photos easily.
C. The author makes a living by photographing birds.
D. The author values each chance to photograph birds.
答案:4-7:CBDD

Tai chi, a centuries-old Chinese martial art (武术)and an internationally popular form of exercise, has been added to the cultural heritage list of the UNESCO(联合国教科文组织).
As its first application was turned down in 2008, for more than 10 years, China has been
trying to have tai chi-also known as taijiquan-recognized officially the UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. At the time, judges told China it had applied for too many listings for tai chi to be considered for a place. China was told to reduce its applications from listings, which included tai chi, Shaolin kung fu,Peking opera and acupuncture(针灸).
According to the Mayo Clinic in the United States, doing tai chi can reduce stress and anxiety, improve energy, strengthen the immune system and reduce joint pain. “It is not just a sport to make people fit, but also contains Chinese culture and philosophy" researcher Yan Shuangjun also told Xinhua News Agency. “The application started in 2008, and now we made a victory, which will help this sport to reach more places.”
Tai chi has a large number of devoted global followings. Millions of elderly Chinese people practise it every day in parks. Each year, tens of thousands of people from other countries come to China to learn it. They make tai chi into their daily lives.
( )8. What can we learn about the applications in 2008
A. The first application of tai chi was accepted.
B. Tai chi is a Chinese martial art with a short history.
C. China applied for acupuncture and Peking opera.

D. It can help people build up energy and reduce stress.
( )10. How can we describe tai chi from the last paragraph
A. Healthy.
B. Difficult.
C. Welcomed.
D. Time-taking.

D篇
As birth order is clearly one of the many factors that affect personality development, we
Should pay much attention to it. Big brothers and sisters usually develop leadership early in life, mainly because of the responsibilities for younger children given to them by their
parents. The danger is that if the older child takes that role to an extreme, he or she can become an
overbearing adult.
Studies of nearly 300 people have found that firstborns are usually the most strongly motivated(有积极性的)toward achievements. This is mainly the result of parental expectations. Research also suggests that firstborn children generally become more conservative than other children because they receive most of the parental orders and rules. Used to caring for others, they are more likely to move toward such leadership professions as teaching and politics. Less social and flexible because they become accustomed in the very early years to acting alone, they may have difficulty making close friends.
By contrast, the researchers say later children are more likely to be more relaxed and sociable than the eldest child because their parents are more relaxed. However, later children are often less ambitious(雄心壮志的) and may be uncomfortable making decisions for others, and will seek work that fits their needs. This may help explain why younger children prefer the creative fields such as music, art, and writing. Later children may make good sellers because persuasion(说服) may have been the only tool they had to deal with older children. Younger children tend to remain forever “the baby" enjoyable to be around, but at times too dependent on others.
( )12. The underlined word “overbearing” in the first paragraph means “________”.
A. trying to make other people obey without regard for their ideas or feelings
B. being unable to express what one really feels or to do what one really wants
C. preferring the established order of society to change
D. changing easily to adapt to new needs, conditions or ideas
( )13. It can be inferred from the passage that a younger child is more likely to be a good
A. librarian
C. writer
B. doctor
D. teacher
( )14.Later children may become good sellers because they
A. feel uneasy when making decisions for other people
B. are very good at persuading others
C. have great ambition to develop leadership
D. are more relaxed and sociable
( )15. What's the best title for this passage
A. Which Is Better: Being the Eldest or the Youngest
B. Birth Order Factor in Marriage
C. The Relation between Birth Order and Job Success
D. Effects of Birth Order on One's Personality

He did not like his father's attitude and character to his grandfather, because his father was treating his grandfather cruelly. One day Kuppan was eating his food in the small plate that his son had given to him. The plate fell and broke into pieces. The food also fell on the floor. Robert was working at the other end of the room. He saw the broken plate. He was very angry with his father and used very sharp words to blame his father. The old man felt bad about what happened. Paragraph 2

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________.
参考答案:
One possible version:
The next day, Michael took some of his father's tools and a piece of wood. He used the tools to make a wooden plate. His father saw him working and asked, “What are you making, Michael ” “I am making a wooden plate!” replied Michael. “A wooden plate! What for ” asked his father. “I am making it for you, Father. When you grow old and weak, like my grandfather, you will need a plate for food. A plate made from mud may be broken easily. Then I may scold you severely. So, I want to give you a wooden plate. It won't be broken so easily.”
The carpenter was pretty shocked to hear that. He realized his mistake. Robert's father was ever kind to Robert. He had looked after Robert very well. Now, he was old. Robert was treating his father badly. He was now very sad about his own behaviors. He decided to become a different person. From that day, Robert treated his father with great respect. He learned a lesson from his own son.
