It is widely known that any English conversation begins with The Weather. Such a fixation with the weather finds expression in Dr. Johnson's famous comment that "When two English meet, their first talk is of weather." Though Johnson's observation is as accurate now as it was over two hundred years ago, most commentators fail to come up with a convincing explanation for this English weather-speak.
Bill Bryson, for example, concludes that, as the English weather is not at all exciting, the obsession with it can hardly be understood. He argues that "To an outsider, the most striking thing about the English weather is that there is not very much of it." Simply, the reason is that the unusual and unpredictable weather is almost unknown in the British Isles.
Jeremy Paxman, however, disagrees with Bryson, arguing that the English weather is by nature attractive. Bryson is wrong, he says, because the English preference for the weather has nothing to do with the natural phenomena. "The interest is less in the phenomena themselves, but in uncertainty." According to him, the weather in England is very changeable and uncertain and it attracts the English as well as the outsider.
Bryson and Paxman stand for common misconceptions about the weather-speak among the English. Both commentators, somehow, are missing the point. The English weather conversation is not really about the weather at all. English weather-speak is a system of signs, which is developed to help the speakers overcome the natural reserve and actually talk to each other. Everyone knows conversations starting with weather-speak are not requests for weather data. Rather, they are routine greetings, conversation starters or the blank "fillers". In other words, English weather-speak is a means of social bonding.

Do you like writing a few paragraphs every day about your experiences, hopes, memories or feelings If you don't, it's time to make a change now. Here is why.
You will gradually become better at expressing yourself. When I am forced to write every day because of a book deadline(最后期限), I am always amazed at how quickly my writing and verbal(口头的) communication skills improve. When we become lazy with words, it is more difficult to describe feelings, share experiences and make ourselves understood.
You will remember things long forgotten. As you write about memories, it is like opening an old photo album. Your pen begins to explore feelings and details you have forgotten, and dreams you would like to contact again. Writing is an activity that avoids distractions(分心) long enough for you to explore those wonderful moments of the past. Sometimes they are frightening. Sometimes they are wonderful and almost always they are helpful.
Writing about daily experiences and feelings provides a recorded history that will influence how you make future decisions. There's a reason that the greatest leaders in history were students of history. They learned from what had happened before. Your history is important. Don't let it be forgotten.
Writing reminds you of your dreams and keeps you moving toward them. It is a means of keeping track of your purpose and the goals that will lead you to achieve them. Reviewing what you have written is a perfect way to see your progress and to show when you have been distracted and may need to give all your attention again to your writing.
Writing a little every day could provide the material that someday becomes a published book. When I wrote about my four-year-old granddaughter who had lost in the mountains, I never dreamed it would be in a book.
1.What did the author want to show by giving the example in Paragraph 2
A.We shouldn't be lazy with words.
B.A deadline encourages us to work hard.
C.Writing helps us better express ourselves.
D.There're good ways to improve our writing skills.
2.According to Paragraph 3,what does writing help us do
A.Improve our memory quickly.
B.Think of our past experiences.
C.Successfully achieve our dreams.
D.Explore happy moments in others' lives.
3.What does Paragraph 5 mainly tell us about writing
A.It can be encouraging. B.It can be distracting.
C.It can be disappointing. D.It can be interesting.
4.What is the purpose of the author in writing the passage
A.To tell us how to publish books one day.
B.To explain why the author loves writing.
C.To tell us how to improve our writing skills.
D.To encourage us to write about our lives every day.

Afternoon was Mrs. Green's favorite time of day. After a hard day at work, her eyes were tired and her feet hurt. She usually enjoyed the nice long sleep when she was on the bus. Mrs. Green had made friends with the bus driver, Mr. Smith. He always woke her up before her stop. She usually felt fresh again when she got off the bus. But today was different. Mr. Smith wasn't driving. A small man sat in the driver's seat. "Where's Mr. Smith " asked Mrs. Green, dropping her money into the box. "I don't know. Sick, I guess. I just work here, lady." Mrs. Green hoped that Mr. Smith was all right. She didn't like this new driver. She decided not to sleep on the way home today. She didn't want to ask this driver to wake her.
Mrs. Green looked out of the window. It was a warm afternoon. Though she tried hard to stay awake, the gentle rocking of the bus made her fall asleep soon.
Then Mrs. Green felt someone shaking her. "Wake up, lady. We've come to the end of the line." Mrs. Green slowly opened her eyes. The bus driver looked down at her, "I said, this is the end of the line, lady. It's time to get off."
Mrs. Green looked out of the window. "Where am I " she asked. "I was supposed to get off at Brighten Avenue."
"You are at the last stop, lady. Come on, get off the bus."
Mrs. Green had trouble waking up. When the bus driver took her arm and helped her step off the bus, she felt a sense of panic. "Wait a minute," she screamed. "This isn't Brighten Avenue. Where am I How can I get home "
"Cool off, lady. You are at the end of the line. You have to get off here." "But why can't I ride back with you " she begged. "I have the fare!"
"Sorry, lady," he said as he closed the door. "It's against the rules. You have missed the stop, and I can't take you back again."

第二节
答案:
Mrs. Green watched the bus disappear down the road. She looked and walked around, trying to figure out what part of the city she was in. There were no stores around, no street signs, and no taxis. Few people could be seen at this lonely stop. It seemed the city was miles away. She couldn't help complaining. "How rude the new driver is!" she thought. "Although it is the end of the line, why can't I ride back Is it a one-way ride " It seemed she could not find the way home.
Suddenly the afternoon sun seemed surprisingly bright. The driver drove his car and pulled up. He got out of his car, smiled and came up to her, saying it was time for her to go. She couldn't understand and still complained about the driver and the unreasonable rules, saying that she was just having a sleep and then missed Brighten Avenue. But the driver explained patiently that those were the company's rules and he couldn't break them, and that was why he came again to send her home.
