It was a small town which lay by the coast. Most people there lived by catching fish. The hurricanes often struck the area from July to October. They were afraid to meet with the hurricanes when they were catching fish on the sea. Each of the families had a radio and people always took them with themselves and listened to them at any time.
It was September. A hurricane attacked the town one night. Plenty of trees were pushed over and all the electric and telephone lines were broken. People couldn't watch TV, or call their friends,or go to work. To their anger, they couldn't listen to the weather forecasts the Town Radio Station broadcast. The food and fresh water would soon be short and the patients couldn't be given medical care一no medicine could be carried there. People didn't know what would happen and they looked anxious.
On the fourth day they read an announcement(通告) on the Town Weekly. It was written, "Recently we have to stop the weather forecast because of the bad weather. Explorers have found a ship that is over 200 years old at the bottom of Lake Ontario.
This is the second-oldest, confirmed shipwreck(遇难船) in the Great Lakes area between the U.S. and Canada, the explorers said.
The team of three underwater explorers found that the ship is from the western part of the U.S. state of New York. The wreck was in the deep waters of Lake Ontario near the town of Oswego in central New York.
Team member Jim Kennard said that pictures taken using an unmanned vehicle identified(识别) the ship as the Washington. The Washington sank in 1803.

Yesterday morning I was having breakfast in the 37th floor club lounge(休息室) at the Inter Continental Bangkok, quite enjoying my conversation with Julia. She is a lovely Bavarian lady who works in the club lounge. Suddenly I felt really dizzy(晕眩的). I hadn't drunk anything the night before and had got a great night of sleep so I found that a bit strange. But it continued. After a few moments I realized what was going on I wasn't dizzy, but it was an earthquake. For over 20 seconds the club floor was shaking.
Julia tried to remain calm and asked us to go down the stairs. When I walked past the rooftop pool, I saw water rushing out of it, which terrified me even more. I skipped down the 37 flights of stairs as if I were taking part in the Olympics.
However, as I was trying to get to the ground floor, I found it strange that nobody else was escaping. Eventually I made it to the ground floor. Again, I had never been in an earthquake before, so I had no sense of what it was like during an earthquake. I was kind of expecting disorder on the streets, a thousand people in the hall, and a general Armageddon style setting.
Sure enough I hurriedly got through the doors on the first floor and went straight to the reception desk, thinking the girl at the desk knew what was going on. But she looked quite confused, not knowing what I was talking about. Then I asked another one but I got the same response. I believed the world was coming to an end, while everyone looked at me as if nothing had happened.
Well, as it turned out, nothing did happen to them. Clearly there was an earthquake in Myanmar, and it was only felt at the top of some of the taller buildings in Bangkok.
Julia kept the club lounge closed for safety for some time, while I was happy just to be on the ground level.

A.Nothing seemed to have happened.
B.Many people were trying to escape.
C.People were looking at him nervously.
D.There were no other people in the street.
3.Why did the girl at the reception desk look confused
A.Because no one was running.
B.Because the author looked strange.
C.Because she didn't feel any shaking at all.
D.Because she didn't speak the author's language.
4.What is the text mainly about
A.A joke others played on the author.
B.How the author survived an earthquake.
C.The author's most unforgettable experience.
D.The author's experience in an earthquake.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up If you were like most children, you probably let your imagination run 1 . Maybe you dreamed of flying into space or being a famous chef. Then perhaps over the years, your dreams became more 2 . Or you might have given up on some altogether.
If that's the case, then today's the day for you. January 13th is Make Your Dreams Come True Day. If you've been 3 fulfilling your dreams, this is the day to make a fresh start.
It's important to dream because dreams can give us the 4 to succeed in life. Dreams inspire and motivate us. The great thing about dreams is that there's no 5 to accomplish them right away. They might take a few years or they might take a lifetime to 6 . The important thing is that you're 7 working toward your dream. And the best way to do that is by setting goals.
What is the 8 between a dream and a goal It's been said that dreams are the final destination; goals are the stops along the way.
Dreams can be very 9 . But the steps you take to reach them should be very 10 . Your dreams state what you want, but goals explain how you'll get there. That makes goal setting a necessary step in 11 your dreams.
Many successful people have spoken about dreams. Former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell stressed the 12 of working for your dreams. "A dream doesn't become reality through magic: it takes sweat, 13 and hared work." Author Les Brown reminded us that dreams have no 14 limit. You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.
If you've been dreaming about doing something for years, start today. Write down your dream, and 15 your goals. Then you'll be on your way to making your dreams come true.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I took a job as a receptionist for a veterinarian(兽医) almost five decades ago. As an enthusiastic animal lover, I accepted the position on condition that I wouldn't have to assist with any wounded animals. I couldn't bear to see any creature in pain. At the end of my first week, we were closing the office for the day when a young man ran up to us holding a severely injured Doberman puppy in his arms and begging us to save his life. The four-month-old pup had been hit by a car.
The doctor and I ran back into the operating room. The only place the skin was still attached to this poor little animal's body was around one shoulder. The vet worked tirelessly for what seemed like hours, stitching(缝合) him back together again. That was the easy part. The puppy had broken multiple bones, including his spine (脊柱). Even if he survived the next few days, we were quite sure he would never walk again.
That day forever changed my life. The veterinarian guided me, and I became his assistant in all things. One of my first jobs was to give that Doberman puppy daily physical care. I remembered moving his tiny legs to try to keep his muscles from withering (萎缩). Weeks went by until one day, I felt this little fighter push back ever so slightly. And he continued to push back till he could finally use his legs. He recovered.
A year later, I walked into the clinic's waiting room and saw a huge Doberman who had been standing quietly with his owner on the opposite side of the room. I called the name of the next client.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。

答案:
Suddenly, the huge Doberman broke loose and rushed toward me. I found myself pinned against the wall in amazement. To my surprise, the dog stood on his legs, his front paws on my shoulders, washing my face with joyful and abundant kisses! His owner came to me and told me that he was the dog we had saved one year ago. More than excited to see him again in such good health, I hugged him tightly, determined to become a good vet technician at that moment.
I went on to be a vet technician for 14 years, and since retirement, I've volunteered at a no-kill animal shelter. Being a vet technician and a volunteer at the no-kill animal shelter. I succeeded in saving more animals, which often made me think of the grateful huge Doberman.
