It's important to have difficult conversations, so why do we avoid them We avoid difficult conversations for many reasons—we don't want to make matters worse, we fear we'll be attacked back, we don't want to be mean, and so on.
It's natural to dread difficult conversations. However, the truth is that when we treat each other with respect, the conversations are rarely as difficult as we expect. When we avoid difficult conversations, the problem never has a chance to be solved. Plus, as we play the stories over and over in our mind, they get louder and the people in the stories become bigger and bigger bad guys.
When we take part in difficult conversations, we have an opportunity to build trust and respect. We also learn we can challenge each other without fear, which means our relationships with other people and organizations improve greatly. When we lake part in difficult conversations, we show we care enough to bother, and respect creativity and other peopled opinions/experiences/education. We realize we might have missed something if we had not discussed it with someone else (two minds are better than one). This can build confidence in ourselves and our relationships f and create trust and respect.
So how to prepare for and have difficult conversations Overall, stay positive, listen carefully, be kind (don't attack), and do not be defensive(自卫的). Difficult conversations are rarely bad situations unless we make them that way. Get clear on your purpose —make sure your purpose is not about teaching others a lesson. If you get emotional(情绪激动的), heated and off topic, and then it's likely that they will also get emotional.
Having difficult conversations is important to healthy relationships. So don't avoid having difficult conversations. And finally, be comfortable being uncomfortable. Yes, difficult conversations will be uncomfortable. But your purposes are good and you are willing to be uncomfortable for the benefit of the person, the relationship and/or the company.

Winter begins in the north on December 22nd. People and animals have been doing what they always do to prepare for the colder months. Squirrels (松鼠), for example, have been busy gathering nuts from trees. Well, scientists have been busy gathering information about what the squirrels do with the food they collect.
They examined differences between red squirrels and gray squirrels in the American state of Indiana. The scientists wanted to know how these differences could affect the growth of black walnut (黑胡桃) trees. The black walnut is the nut of choice for both kinds of squirrels. The black walnut tree is also a central part of some hardwood forests.
Rob Swihart of Purdue University did the study with Jake Goheen, a former Purdue student now at the University of New Mexico. The two researchers estimate that several times as many walnuts grow when gathered by gray squirrels as compared to red squirrels. Gray squirrels and red squirrels do not store nuts and seeds in the same way. Gray squirrels bury nuts one at a time in a number of places. But they seldom remember where they buried every nut. So some nuts remain in the ground. Conditions are right for them to develop and grow the following spring. Red squirrels, however, store large groups of nuts above ground. Professor Swihart calls "death traps for seeds".
Gray squirrels are native to Indiana. But Professor Swihart says their numbers began to decrease as more forests were cut for agriculture. Red squirrels began to spread through the state during the past century.
The researchers say red squirrels are native to forests that stay green all year, unlike walnut trees. They say the cleaning of forest land for agriculture has helped red squirrels invade Indiana. Jake Goheen calls them a sign of an environmental problem more than a cause.
1.The study done by Rob Swihart and Jake Goheen is to ________.
A.find out the living conditions for squirrels
B.learn squirrels' influence on black walnut trees
C.do something to get rid of squirrels
D.save the forests in the American state of Indiana
2.The difference between gray squirrels and red squirrels mainly lies in ________.
A.the way they gather the walnut B.the time they have winter sleep
C.the place they have winter sleep D.the place they store the walnuts

A.red squirrels eat more nuts than gray squirrels
B.gray squirrels and red squirrels will have severe fights
C.nuts above the ground will not develop into plants
D.seeds can be traps for other animals in the forest
4.According to the passage, which of the following is true
A.The black walnut is equally attractive to both gray and red squirrels.
B.Gray squirrels do more harm to the forest than red squirrels.
C.Red squirrels and gray squirrels have helped the spread of walnut trees.
D.The cleaning of forest land benefits red squirrels directly.

Which comes first, happiness or money Are richer people happier And if so, how do people get much richer A recent study could tell you the answer.
The study looked into thousands of teenagers and found that those who felt better about life as young adults tended to have higher incomes by the time they turned 29. Those who were happiest earned an average of $8,000 more than those who were the most depressed.
The researchers, from University College London and the University of Warwick, say that very gloomy teens, no matter how tall or smart they were, earned 10% less than their peers, while the happier ones earned up to 30% more.
Happier teenagers have an easier time getting through school, college and the job interview, chiefly because they always feel better about life. It may also be true that happier people find it easier to make friends, who are often the key to homework help or networking.
A report in June suggested that professional respect was more important than dollars in terms of workplace happiness. In August scientists announced that they had found the gene for happiness in women, Alas (the same gene doesn't appear to have the same effect on men). And in October researchers in the UK and in the US announced that people who eat seven portions of fruit and vegetables a day report being the happiest.
The big question is: if it is really true that happier kids end up being wealthier kids, is it necessary for parents to get their kids to do the homework The fact is that no homework will make kids happy but surely hurt their grades. Studies do show, after all, that more education leads to better-paid jobs, which may give us a deep thought.
"These findings show that the teenagers' happiness is important to their future success," one of the report's authors writes. "But what is the most important is that we should find a way to help children gain more satisfaction from doing schoolwork."
1.What conclusion can the researchers draw from the recent study
A.Happy teenagers grow up to be wealthier.
B.Money can make people become happier.
C.Wealth has nothing to do with happiness at all.
D.Schoolwork can help teens achieve success.
2.The main reason why happier people have more chances to succeed is that _________.
A.they are easy to communicate with others
B.they are good at doing their schoolwork
C.they are hopeful and optimistic about their life
D.they eat much more fruit and vegetables a day
3.The underlined word "gloomy" in Paragraph 3 probably means ________.
A.upset B.glorious C.happy D.wealthy
4.What can be the best title for the text
A.The way to educate kids B.The source of happiness

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Desiree, a 4-year-old girl, was sobbing quietly over her father, Ken, who had died nine months earlier. She was hugging a photograph of her father with her fingers running around his face. "Daddy," she said softly, "why won't you come back "
Instead of gradually adjusting to her father's death, Desiree refused to accept it. "Daddy will be home soon," she'd tell her mother. "He's at work." When she played with her toy telephone, she pretended she was chatting with her father. "I miss you, Daddy," she'd say. "When will you come back " Desiree's situation made her mother worried.
Days later, it was Ken's birthday. "How will I send him a card " Desiree asked her mother. "How about if we tie a letter to a balloon," her mother said, "and send it up to heaven " Desiree's eyes immediately lit up.
Her mother took her to a store and Desiree picked out a balloon with HAPPY BIRTHDAY above a drawing of The Little Mermaid. Desiree and her father had often watched it. The child's eyes shone as they were on the way to Ken's grave. Then Desiree dictated (口述) a letter to her Dad. "Daddy, happy birthday, I love you and miss you," she rattled off (快速说). "I hope you get this and can write to me on my birthday in January."
Her mother wrote the message and their address on a small piece of paper, which was then wrapped in plastic and tied to the end of the string on the balloon. Finally, Desiree let the balloon fly. For almost an hour, they watched the shining spot of silver grow smaller and smaller till it disappeared. "Now Dad's going to write back to me," Desiree said confidently.
Every day after they'd flown the balloon, Desiree asked her mother, "Do you think Daddy has my balloon yet " Several weeks passed, and she stopped asking.

She opened the parcel and found a card with "For a Dear Daughter". Her heart raced. She rushed to Desiree's room and showed her the letter. "It's from Daddy!" Desiree jumped with joy, asking her mother to read it for her. "Happy birthday, my little angel!" Her mother began. A big tear began to trickle down Desiree's cheek.
