Their cheery song brightens many a winter's day. But robins are in danger of wearing themselves out by singing too much. Robins are singing all night一as well as during the day, British-based researchers say.
David Dominoni, of Glasgow University, said that light from street lamps, take away signs and homes is affecting the birds' biological clock, leading to them being wide awake when they should be asleep.
Dr Dominoni, who is putting cameras inside nesting boxes to track sleeping patterns, said lack of sleep could put the birds' health at risk. His study shows that when robins are exposed to light at night in the lab, it leads to some genes being active at the wrong time of day. And the more birds are exposed to light, the more active they are at night.
He told people at a conference, "There have been a couple of studies suggesting they are increasing their song output at night and during the day they are still singing. Singing is a costly behaviour and it takes energy. So by increasing their song output, there might be some costs of energy."
And it is not just robins that are being kept awake by artificial light. Blackbirds and seagulls are also being more nocturnal. Dr Dominoni said, "In Glasgow where I live, gulls are a serious problem. I have people coming to me saying 'You are the bird expert. Can you help us kill these gulls '. During the breeding(繁殖) season, between April and June, they are very active at night and very noisy and people can't sleep."
Although Dr Dominoni has only studied light pollution, other research concluded that robins living in noisy cities have started to sing at night to make themselves heard over loud noise.
However, some birds thrive(兴旺) in noisy environments. A study from California Polytechnic University found more hummingbirds in areas with heavy industrial machinery. It is thought that they are capitalising on their predators(天敌) fleeing to quieter areas.

The World Health Organization warns that millions of people are dying every year from indoor air pollution. Nearly three billion people are unable to use clean fuels and technologies for cooking, heating and lighting.
These findings show that the use of deadly fuels in inefficient stoves, space heaters or lights is to blame for many of these deaths.
WHO officials say indoor pollution leads to early deaths from the stroke, heart and lung disease, childhood pneumonia or lung cancer. Women and girls are the main victims. These diseases can often result from the burning of solid fuels. These fuels include wood, coal, animal waste, crop waste and charcoal.
The United Nations found that more than 95 percent of households in Sub-Saharan Africa depend on solid fuels for cooking. It says huge populations in India, China and Latin American countries, such as Guatemala and Peru, are also at risk.
Nigel Brace is a professor of Public Health at the University of Liverpool. He says researchers are developing good cook-stoves and other equipment to burn fuels in a more efficient way. There are already multiple technologies available for use in clean fuels. There is really quite an effective and reasonably low-cost alcohol stove that is made by Dometic (a Sweden-based company) that is now being tested out. LPG( liquified petroleum gas) cook is obviously widely a-vailable and efforts are under way to make those efficient. Another interesting development is electric induction stoves(电磁炉).WHO experts note some new, safe and low-cost technologies that could help are already available. In India, you can buy an induction stove for about $8.00. And in Africa you can buy a solar lamp for less than $1.00.
But, this, the agency says, is just a start. It is urging developing countries to use cleaner fuels and increase access to cleaner and more modem cooking and heating appliances.

The meaning of silence varies among cultural groups. Silences may be thoughtful, or they may be empty when a person has nothing to say. A silence in a conversation may also show stubbornness, uneasiness, or worry. Silence may be viewed by some cultural groups as extremely uncomfortable; therefore attempts may be made to fill every gap(间隙) with conversation. Persons in other cultural groups value silence and view it as necessary for understanding a person's needs.
Many Native Americans value silence and feel it is a basic part of communicating among people, just as some traditional Chinese and Thai persons do. Therefore, when a person from one of these cultures is speaking and suddenly stops, what may be implied is that the person wants the listener to consider what has been said before continuing. In these cultures, silence is a call for reflection.
Other cultures may use silence in other ways, particularly when dealing with conflicts among people or in relationships of people with different amounts of power. For example, Russian, French, and Spanish persons may use silence to show agreement between parties about the topic under discussion. However, Mexicans may use silence when instructions are given by a person in authority rather than be rude to that person by arguing with him or her. In still another use, persons in Asian cultures may view silence as a sign of respect, particularly to an elder or a person in authority.
Nurses and other care-givers need to be aware of the possible meanings of silence when they come across the personal anxiety their patients may be experiencing. Nurses should recognize their own personal and cultural construction of silence so that a patient's silence is not interrupted too early or allowed to go on unnecessarily. A nurse who understands the healing(治愈) value of silence can use this understanding to assist in the care of patients from their own and from other cultures.
1.What does the author say about silence in conversations
A.It implies anger. B.It promotes friendship.
C.It is culture-specific. D.It is content-based.
2.Which of the following people might regard silence as a call for careful thought
A.The Chinese. B.The French. C.The Mexicans. D.The Russians.
3.What does the author advise nurses to do about silence
A.Let it continue as the patient pleases. B.Break it while treating patients.
C.Evaluate its harm to patients. D.Make use of its healing effects.
4.What may be the best title for the text
A.Sound and Silence B.What It Means to Be Silent
C.Silence to Native Americans D.Speech Is Silver; Silence Is Gold

The lumps(肿块) after the allergy tests showed their terrible messages that I am allergic to cats, dogs and fur. I cried because I knew what this meant. Our pets would have to go.
Our family of five lived on the Naval Air Station in Key West, Florida. My mother found neighbors who were willing to take care of our sweet dog, Tramp. My sister gave her guinea pig(豚鼠) to one of her friends at school. But I begged my parents to let us keep my beloved cat, Grungy.
We had adopted Grungy six years earlier in Turkey, from the Cat Lady, a kind figure who rescued wild cats. Grungy was once lost and found, in Rome, when he somehow missed our return flight back to the States, and again when he finally arrived at the base in Rhode Island, and escaped from his cage. For days, he walked around the airfield and followed an airmen until my dad learned from the airman and brought him home.
After that adventure, Grungy faced a new challenge: Because of my allergies, he would have to be given away. My mother wrote an announcement on the local newspaper. "Wanted: Loving family for a unique cat. Serious inquiries only. "She added our phone number and placed the ad. But I prayed that no one would call, but several people did. And our parents decided to meet a young couple who lived two islands away on Boca Chica Key. The young man had no children, but the young man's wife worked at home, so Grungy wouldn't be lonely when he adjusted to his new life.
I stood silent the day that they arrived to see my cat. I didn't want to like the soft-spoken man or his pretty, dark-haired wife. To our surprise, Grungy allowed them both to pick him up and hold him. Both of them stroked his soft head and promised to take good care of him. We were all sad to see Grungy go especially me. When I couldn't control my tears, I ran to my room.

故填to eat。
故填 When/If。
故填for。
故填its。
故填and。

答案:
Dear Tim,
Knowing that you'll visit China in the coming winter holiday, I'm writing to give you some suggestions on your trip.
I recommend the capital city, Beijing, to you. It is an amazing city with a long history and a variety of places of interest. You may first go to Tiananmen Square, where many tourists admire the national flag being raised every early morning. The next place that you can't miss is the Great Wall, which is one of the great wonders in the world. The Palace Museum and the Summer Palace are well worth visiting, too. Besides, the local snacks will surely be appealing to you.
I hope you will find these suggestions helpful.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

At least we knew the location of those former furry family members. However, where could Grungy be

Maybe that's because he loved us so much. To this day, we still remember the cat that walked miles to come home. And we should never underestimate the power of love.
