怎么了?
What's up = What's happening / What's the matter
What's up 是非正式用语,意思是“怎么了/出了什么事?”
① What's up Why is the baby crying
怎么了?为什么婴儿在哭?
② He is very pale. What's up with him
他脸色很苍白,究竟怎么了?

2. But I think I'd describe Confucius more as a teacher and thinker than a writer.
但是我更愿意把孔子描述成一位教育家和思想家,而非作家。
describe…as…意思是“把……描述为……; 认为……”。
① She was described as being very clever.
据说她很聪明。
② His teacher described him as a little hero.
他的老师形容他是一个小英雄。
① He is more lucky than clever.
与其说他聪明,不如说他幸运。
② It is more hot than warm.
与其说天气暖和,不如说天气闷热。
③ He is more an artist than a philosopher.

more…than…在本句中表示“与其说是……不如说是……”。

influence: v. 影响;作用于 influence sb./sth. be influenced by sth.

6. …but I suppose he isn't as well-known as Confucius or Shakespeare.

suppose 表示“(根据所知)认为,推断,料想”。常见用法:
(1) suppose + to infinitive
(2) suppose + that从句
① Her new book is supposed to be very good.
大多数人都认为她的新书写得很好。
② Do you suppose (that) Gillian will marry him
你认为吉莉恩会嫁给他吗
① He is as strong as a horse.
他力大如牛。
② The tree is as tall as the building.
这棵树和那栋楼一样高。
③ Lucy speaks Chinese as well as Lily.
露西和莉莉汉语讲得一样好。
“as +adj./adv. 原级+as” 用于比较句型, 意思是“达到与什么相同的程度”。

surprised: 惊讶的,用来描述人的感情。
be surprised (to see, hear, etc.)
She felt surprised at the surprising news.
她对这个令人惊人的消息感到很惊讶。
surprising: 令人惊讶的,用来描述人或事物的性质。
作表语, 相当于living
alive: adj. 活着的,在句中可作表语,后置定语,及宾语补足语。
① Who's the greatest man alive
谁是当今最伟大的人物?
② We are very excited to find the little boy alive.
我们看到这个小男孩还活着都很兴奋。
③ I was glad to hear he is alive and well.
听说他健在我很高兴。
作后置定语
作宾语补足语
作表语
句中三个由how引导的句子均为宾语从句,作动词tells的宾语。注意:宾语从句要用陈述句语序。
3. It tells how young people grow, how people love each other and how bad people pay for their actions.
讲述了年轻人怎样成长,人们如何彼此相爱,以及坏人如何为他们的行为受到惩罚。
① We all pay for our mistakes in one way or another.
我们都会为自己的错误付出这样或那样的代价。
② These people must pay for their crimes.
这些人必须为他们自己的罪行付出代价。
pay for 为……付出代价;受惩罚
