Unit 3
The world online
A Mr Tan, an IT teacher, is giving a brief introduction to the Internet. Listen and finish the exercises below.
Focus on key words
Do not try to catch every word. Instead, listen for key words and phrases. You should focus on getting the main idea, not on single words or grammar.
不要试图听懂每个单词。相反,听关键词和短语。你应该把注意力集中在主旨上,而不是单个的单词或语法。
Be careful when listening for years: it is normal to treat the first two numbers and the last two numbers separately, but there are various ways of saying them. In general, speakers try to use the shortest way possible, for example, 1979 (nineteen eventy-nine), 2003 (two thousand and three), 1805 (eighteen o five). Sometimes we add mid- before a certain year, e.g. mid-2008. We also use expressions like the early / late 1980s.

Good morning, class, today I am going to talk about the Internet, I am
sure all of you use the internet. But what do you know about it Now
let me tell you about it's history and development, the first
general-purpose computers came onto the market in the early 1950s,
but it was only in 1969, the scientists invented the way for computers to
communicate with each other. This meant that the computer allowed
people to pass message along a network and talk to each other.
To start with, only 4 compouters were connected and the net work was for military use. public commercial use of the internet began in mid 1989.
One of the main application of the internet is the world wide web,
pages on the world wide web are called websites and can be accessed
through the internet.

He went to other's how to built their own websites allowing the internet to grow, within 24 years , there were more than 1 billion website online, 2 years later in 2016, 3.6 billion people were using the Internet, about 48 per cent of the world's population at the time and increasingly people are using their phones to access the internet, the future is definitely online and is definitely mobile.
Mr Tan also shows the students some charts about Internet use.
Viewing charts
There are different types of charts to show information. Bar charts are often used to show how something changes over time or to compare different things. Pie charts are used to show percentages. Line charts are often used to show trends. To understand a chart, it is important to read the title and captions.

Report on Middle School Students' Pocket Money
Recently a survey has been done to find out how middle school students spend their pocket money. In this survey, both junior students and senior students spend most of their money on books, snacks and playing games, and still some money goes to clothes, banks, sports and so on.
The survey shows that about 46% of seniors prefer books to snacks (37%) and playing games (31%).On the other hand, only 32% of juniors will spend their pocket money on books, while over a half buy snacks and 46% spend on playing games. Both seniors and juniors would not waste too much money on clothes or put it in banks.
In my opinion, eating too many snacks will not only make us put on weight but also do harm to our health. In addition, if we play games without limits, we'll lose much precious time, which results in low grades.Furthermore, the money is hard earned.I hope we students value our money as well as our time.
A report on Internet use
When the Internet was invented in 1969, no one could have known just how much it would change the world. At that time, computers are large and expensive, thus only some professionals can have access to the Internet. In the 1990s, common people gradually can afford to buy computers, which brought about the increase of Internet use. Over the past 30 years, the whole world has witnessed great changes in the way people use the Internet.
Compared with online activities 5 years ago, more and more people use the Internet for information or E-commerce, including shopping, payment and travel booking, while fewer people use it to send e-mails. Meanwhile, there is a sharp increase of 26 per cent of people using mobile devices to access the Internet. However, the percentage remains almost the same when it comes to Internet users of different ages, with only slight increases in the Internet users from 0 to 19, from 40 to 59 and those above 59, which may be caused the popularity of smartphones among people of all ages.
As far as I am concerned, I think the Internet will definitely play an increasingly important part in our life and it will bring us more convenience and benefits as long as we properly take advantage of it.
