A Secret of a Long Life
I am Peter Brown.I am a writer with an important magazine. The other day I saw a white haired man sitting on the chair in front of his house.I could see the wrinkles (皱纹) in his face and neck, and his wrinkled hands.Articles on the secrets of living to an old age are always popular with our readers,so I decided to write a story and discover the secret of this man's long life.As I went near him,I said:
“Sir,would it bother you if I talked with you for just a moment?”
“Not at all.Actually,it would make me very happy.I get very bored sitting here, even for a short time.Until a little while ago,I lived a full and active life without a moment's rest.”
“Well, they say that a lot of activities help one to live a long time.”
“That's true, very true.I still feel very well, although my step has slowed down a little.”
The conversation continued in that way for a while.Although I tried to be very thoughtful about getting information from older people,it seemed to me that it would now be all right to begin to ask some polite questions.
“Would it bother you if I smoked?”
“Not at all.”
“I'd offer you one,but I suppose you probably don't smoke,or drink,or...”
“You're wrong! I've always smoked a great deal. And until a little while ago,I went dancing every night. And as for alcoholic drinks...”
“Do you mean to say that you've done these things all your life?”
“Of course. Why does that surprise you so much?”
“I've always been told that doing those things is bad for the health.”
“Nonsense!”
“I suppose that you have another secret ...a lot of fruit...vegetables...a lot of exercise in the fresh air...”
“Don't be silly! I hate exercise in the fresh air,and I don't like any kind of vegetable.”
“This is unbelievable!”
“What do you mean, unbelievable What are you talking about?”
“It's just that I can't understand how you've been able to live like that and to have lasted so long.Tell me,how old are you?”
“Me I'm twenty eight.Why?”

One of the NBA drafts(选拔)—where professional (职业的) teams choose college players—took place on June 19,1984.The Houston Rockets picked first.Basketball teams at that time preferred to draft the tallest players they could find to play center. That was considered the most important position on any team. The Rockets chose Hakeem Olajuwon,a seven foot tall player. The Portland Trail Blazers went next. They picked another big man,Sam Bowie. The Chicago Bulls chose third. They also would have liked to draft a tall center. But the two best centers had already been chosen, and Michael Jordan's basketball skills attracted their attention. The Bulls chose Michael Jordan.
However,Michael didn't get excited about the result. He had something even more important to do before reporting to the training camp with the Bulls in the fall. The 1984 Summer Olympics were held in Los Angeles. And Michael had been one of the twelve college players chosen for the US basketball team.No professional players could join the Olympic team at that time.
Before the actual Olympics started, the team played many games against NBA players. They traveled to nine different cities and faced groups of some of the best professional players. The games were hard, but the Olympians won every game.Michael thought it was a good preparation for the Olympics.

Being overweight seems to be a national trouble.Diets, books on dieting, dieting organizations, and advice from doctors and health professionals do not seem to be enough.Millions of people have turned to dangerous drugs or harmful diets to starve off their hunger.
The meat industry and the fast food restaurants have more to do with America's weight problem than anything else. Each day we are filled with powerful TV and radio ads promoting (推销)the idea that it's perfectly OK to have bacon and eggs for breakfast, hamburgers and French fries for lunch, and fried chicken and French fries for supper.
Is there a healthy diet that people can use to lose weight and keep themselves slim and fit? There is indeed.A healthy diet and exercise regimen(养生之道) is actually pretty simple. That is to cut meat, fish, and milk products out of the picture completely (and I do mean completely).
·Do not eat any meat,fish,eggs,or milk products.No cheese,no ice cream,no pizza,and no butter.
·Eat only low fat,and low sugar foods.Eat fruit (in reasonable amounts) for desserts.
·As much as possible, avoid drinks with caffeine, such as coffee, tea,or cola.
·Use soya drinks instead of milk.Soya drinks are high in protein and generally fairly low in fat.
·Eat cereals, grain, bread, and pasta in reasonable amounts (with no cheese, but always with high protein foods).
·Jog or walk fast at least one mile per day.If you are unused to this level of exercise, start with smaller distances and build up to a mile.
It has been known for years that it is possible to get all the protein we need from high protein vegetarian foods. Many restaurants now serve vegetable protein meals, such as veggie burgers or refried bean tacos and burritos;be sure to ask for them without cheese or sour cream!

A.they make few ads on TV and on the radio
B.they convince people to eat more foods rich in fat

D.they make people take dangerous drugs or harmful diets
3.To keep slim and fit,the author thinks it better .
A.to drink more coffee, tea or cola
B.to eat cereals, grain, bread, and pasta as much as possible
C.not to eat any meat, fish, eggs,or milk products
D.not to take soya drinks high in protein
4.From the passage,we can infer that .
