Passage A
When I was ten years old,I lived with my family in a small house in rural South Jersey.I often accompanied my mother to the A&P to buy groceries.Without a car,we walked, and I would help her carry the bags.
My mother had to shop very carefully,as she was a waitress, and her salary barely sustained(勉强维持) us.One day, while she was weighing prices,a promotional display for the World Book Encyclopedia caught my eye.The volumes were beautifully cream-colored.Volume Ⅰ was ninety-nine cents with a ten-dollar purchase.
All I could think of while shopping was the book.I stood at the register(收银台) with my mother, holding my breath as the cashier rang up the items. It came to over eleven dollars. My mother produced a five, some singles, and a handful of change. As she was counting out the money,I somehow found the courage to ask for the encyclopedia(百科全书).“Could we get one ”I said showing her the display.“It’s only ninety-nine cents.”
I did not understand my mother’s increasing anxiety; she did not have enough change and had to sacrifice a large can of peas to pay the amount.“Not now,Patricia,”she said sternly.“Today is not a good day.”I packed the groceries and followed her home, upset.
The next Saturday,my mother gave me a dollar and sent me to the A&P alone. Two quarts of milk and a loaf of bread—that’s what a dollar in 1957.I went straight to the book display. There was only one first volume left, which I placed in my cart (购物车).I didn’t need a cart, but took one so I could read as I went up and down the aisles.A lot of time went by and I knew I had to leave, but I couldn’t bear to part with the book. With no detective in sight,I,impulsively(冲动地),put it inside my shirt and zipped up my jacket.I was a tall, skinny kid,and I am certain the shape of the book was obvious.
Paragraph 1:
My heart beating rapidly,I headed for the register.
Paragraph 2:
Back home,I told my mother what I had promised the detective.
Passage B
At first,Michael Surrell didn’t see the black smoke or flames shooting from the windows of his neighbors’ home.He and his wife had just parked around the corner from their own house in Allen town,Pennsylvania, when they got a call from one of their daughters,“The house next door is on fire!” He went to investigate. That’s when he saw two women and a girl hysterical on their porch.
“The baby’s in there!” one of the women cried.Though the fire department had been called,Surrell, then 64,instinctively ran inside.“The baby” was 8-year-old Tiara Roberts, the woman’s granddaughter and a playmate of Surrell’s three youngest kids. The other two on the porch were Tiara’s aunt and cousin.
Entering the burning house was like “running into a bucket of black paint”,Surrell says. The thick smoke caused him to stumble blindly around, burned his eyes, and made it impossible to breathe. The conditions would have been dangerous for anyone, but for Surrell, who has chronic(慢性) disease, they were life-threatening.
After a few minutes in the smoke-filled house,he retreated outside to catch his breath.
“Where is Tiara ” he asked desperately.
“The second floor,” her aunt shouted back.
Surrell knew he couldn’t hold his breath for long.So he uttered a little prayer,“Well,Lord, this is it.You gotta help me,because I’m not coming out without that little girl.” Taking a deep breath,he went in a second time.
The darkness was overwhelming.Yet because the house had a similar layout to his,he found the stairs and made it to the second floor. He turned to the right and was met by intense heat.He was already out of breath.“Baby girl, where are you ”
His throat and lungs burned as if he’d inhaled(吸入) fire instead of the smoke and ash in the air.Every blink stung his eyes. All he could hear was the crackling and popping of burning wood. Then a soft but distinct moan(呻吟) emerged.Still unable to see,Surrell fell to his knees on the hot wood floor. He crawled toward the sound, feeling around for any sign of the girl.An ill thought crossed his mind—I’m probably gonna die up here.
Paragraph 1:
Finally,he touched something.
Paragraph 2:
Surrell put Tiara down on the porch.
Passage C
It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. We had not seen rain in almost a month. The crops were dying.Cows had stopped giving milk. The streams were long gone back into the earth. If we didn’t see some rain soon we would lose everything.
I was in the kitchen making lunch for the family when I saw my six-year-old son,Billy, walking toward the woods.I could only see his back.He wasn’t walking in his usual way.He was obviously walking with a great effort, trying to be as still as possible.Minutes after he disappeared into the woods,he came running out again, toward the house.
Moments later, however,he was once again walking in that slow purposeful long step toward the woods. This activity went on for over an hour—walking cautiously to the woods, then running back to the house. Finally,my curiosity got the best of me.I crept out of the house and followed him on his journey.
He was cupping both hands in front of him as he walked; being very careful not to spill the water he carried.Branches and thorns slapped(拍打) his little face but he did not try to avoid them.He had a much greater purpose. As I leaned in to spy on him,I saw the most amazing site.
Several large deer appeared threatening in front of him.But Billy walked right up to them.I almost screamed for him to get away. And I saw a baby deer laying on the ground, obviously suffering from heavy loss of water and heat exhaustion, lifte its head with great effort to lap(舔)up the water in my beautiful boy’s hand.
Paragraph 1:
When the water was gone,Billy jumped up to run back to the house.
Paragraph 2:
And later I knew what was going on.
Passage D
It was somewhere between spring and summer,my mom and I were driving through the countryside.Back then,I was 13 years old,and always felt unhappy with Mom.But little did I know that this trip was going to be a special one.
A pot of flowers sat in the back seat, whose heavenly scent filled the car.
Suddenly,in the middle of nowhere,my mom pulled over.“What are you doing ”I cried, fearing that the car had broken down and we’d be stuck there,so far from home. But that wasn’t the case.My mom hopped out of the car, grabbing the flowers from the back seat.“It’ll just be a minute,”she called back through the open windows.
My eyes impatiently skimmed the edge of the road before settling on a little sign showing that it was a nursing home.I looked back to the building, somewhat annoyed,as my mom reappeared—empty-handed.
Before she started the car, curiosity drove me to ask,“Do you know someone there ”She shook her head.“Then what did you do with the flowers ”She smiled slightly,“I gave them to the receptionist.”“What ”She laughed at my confusion.“I told the receptionist to give the flowers to whoever needed them, especially who hasn’t gotten any in a while.”
I kept silent for a moment. Not long after we continued our driving,I spoke again,“Did you leave your name ”To this she answered instantly,“No.Leaving flowers there for someone who will appreciate them makes me feel good, which is enough of a thank-you for me.”
Suddenly, still thinking about Mom’s deeds,I heard something burst loudly. It was our car that broke down!Nothing could be worse, because neither my mom nor I understood how to repair it,and we didn’t know where the garage was.It also seemed impossible to wait for any passer-by,since we had seen so few along the way.
Paragraph 1:
We were worrying about what could be done.
Paragraph 2:
As we drove along,a flower shop came into sight on the road.
Passage E
For many years,I had a recurring(重复出现的) dream.I was a little girl again, rushing about, trying to get ready for school.
“Hurry, you’ll be late for school,”my mother called to me.
“I am hurrying,Mom!What did I do with my books ”
Deep inside I knew where the dream came from.It was about some unfinished business in my life.As a kid,I loved everything about school.I loved books, teachers, tests and homework. Most of all I longed to someday march down the aisle(通道) to receive my diploma. That seemed more appealing even than getting married.
But at 15,I had to drop out because my parents couldn’t afford tuition(学费).My hope of getting a diploma was dead,or so I thought.Pretty soon,I married and had three children, and I thought,“There goes my diploma.”
Even so,I wanted my children to be educated. But Linda, our youngest child, had juvenile arthritis(幼年型关节炎) in her hands and knees, which made it impossible for her to function in a normal classroom.I felt really sorry for her and I didn’t want her to live her life with regret.I didn’t give up hope of her being back to school in some way.
One day,I saw an ad in the newspaper for evening courses.“That’s the answer,”I said to myself.Linda always feels better in the evening,so I’ll just sign her up for night school.
Linda was busy filling out enrollment(入学) forms when the secretary said,“Mrs.Schantz, why don’t you come back to school ”
I laughed,“There’s no way!I’m 55!”But he persisted, and before I knew what I had done,I was enrolled for classes in English and crafts.“This is only an experiment,”I warned him,but he just smiled. So,I told myself to try for just a semester and to see if it would work.Anyway,my dream was still there in my heart.
Paragraph 1:
It was exciting to go to school again but
Paragraph 2:
Linda and I saw each other through the time.
Passage F
It was a Saturday afternoon. The color of the sky was changing, first light gray, then dark gray, and finally dark and dense. The wind was blowing heavily, and the trees were swaying in the strong wind.It began to rain cats and dogs.Soon, the road was filled with puddles from the rain.
On such a stormy afternoon,my mother took my five-year-old brother,Christopher, and me to a new big toy store she had read about in the newspaper.“So many toys,”the advertisement had shouted in full and flashy color,“that we had to get a huge warehouse to fit them all!”
Christopher and I couldn’t have been more excited. We ran across the parking lot, through the cold and biting rain,as fast as our little legs could carry us.We left our mother outside to battle with the frustrating umbrella, which never worked when she wanted it to.“Christine!Take care of your young brother!”Mother shouted at the top of her voice.
“Christine!I’m going to find the Lego section(乐高积木区)!There’s a new pirate ship I want, and I have four dollars!Maybe I can buy it!”Christopher exclaimed and ran off excitedly.I only half heard him.I took a right turn and,to my wide-eyed delight, found myself in the midst of the Barbie(芭比) World.
I was studying a Barbie and doing some simple math in my head when suddenly an earthshaking clap of thunder roared from the storm outside.I jumped at the noise, dropping the doll to the floor. The lights flickered(闪烁) once and died, covering everything in a blanket of blackness.Thunder continued to shake the sky and lightning illuminated the store for seconds, casting frightening shadows on my mind.

Paragraph 2:
“Christine,I’m here.”

It was a Thursday.I was walking to the chemistry rooms when my phone in my left pocket vibrated(震动).I took it out and looked at the shiny screen. As soon as I saw my father’s name on that screen I realized something was not right.
He would not call me in the middle of a school day just to talk.He would want me to focus in school and do well.I answered the phone, and my father sounded worried. He told me to find my brother as soon as possible, walk with him to the school picking-up zone and get in the car with my brother. Our driver would take us back home where my father was.
When I was in the car with my brother my dad called the driver and told him to take us to the hospital. We were going to meet him and my mum there. As soon as my brother and I found about the change in plans,we looked at each other in the eyes.I immediately noticed the fear in his eyes.
To be honest,I was really scared too, probably more than he was.But I did not say anything. We arrived at the hospital.I saw my dad on the phone waiting for us at the entrance. He was smoking.Seeing my dad smoking made me more worried.I had never seen him smoke before. He hated it.As soon as he recognized the white car,he threw the cigarette away.I looked at my brother;he was looking out of the other window.I did not tell him what I just saw.I did not want him to worry.
Paragraph 1:
The car stopped right in front of my dad.
Paragraph 2:
We walked down the hall with our eyes closed.
