Language points
① - Will you tell her the truth
- You bet!
— 你会告诉她真相吗?
— 当然会了。
② - Are you coming to the party
- You bet!
— 你来参加晚会吗?
— 当然来。
You bet! : 的确;当然;一定
① I bet against your winning.
我赌你不会赢。
② Mike bet on the red team, and won.
麦克把赌注押在红色上,结果赢了。
bet v. 打赌;下赌注
bet against… 打赌某事不会发生
bet on… 就……打赌
这些名词均有“比赛,竞争”之意。
competition多指体育运动中的各项比赛、角逐,也指知识、技巧等方面的竞赛。结果通常比较直观。
contest多指在音乐、书法、演讲等方面所进行的比赛或竞争。其结果由评判委员会裁决。
match通常指体育运动项目的比赛,隐含势均力敌意味。
competition, contest, match的区别
① The thing is, I have plans on Saturday night.
问题是,我星期六晚上有计划了。
② The thing is , whenever you change, you’re also giving something up.
问题是你一直想改变,事实上你却一直放弃改变的事。
2. The thing is, he’s really good.
问题是他真的很厉害。
the thing is : 问题是,最重要的是,用来解释或者阐述一件事情。
3. And the general standard of the
competitions is much higher this year.
而且今年摄影比赛的整体标准高了很多。
The general opinion is good for us.

general adj. 整体的;普遍的
In general, woman lives longer than man.

in general 通常;大体上
① There is no absolute standard for beauty.
美是没有绝对的标准的。
② Who sets the standard for water quality
水质标准由谁来制订?
standard n. 标准; 水准。 指事先制定出来的一种或一套客观、公正的规则。
① I’ve lost feeling in my hands.
我的双手失去了知觉。
② The child has a natural feeling for music.
这个小孩对音乐具有一种天然的感受力。
4. I have a feeling that we can solve these little difficulties.
我感觉我们能解决这些小问题。
feeling n. 感觉;知觉;直觉看法
① He faced the difficulty with courage.
他勇敢地面对困难。
② We've run into difficulties with the new project.
我们在这项新工程中遇到了难题。
difficulty: difficult的名词形式:
当difficulty表示抽象的“困难”、“费力” 时,是一个不可数名词;当指具体的“难题”、“难处”时,是一个可数名词。
I had difficulty in getting the ink off my skirt.
我很难把衬衣上的墨水洗掉。
have difficulty (in) doing sth
做某事有困难(其中in可省略)

① This is a book on the subject of love.
这是一部以爱情为主题的书。
② What is the subject of the poem
这首诗的题目是什么
subject n. 主题;话题;科目
着重指文章、书籍、画或谈话等所涉及对象的题目或主题。
6. Take some photos of Beijing and add some photos of Cambridge that you took recently.
你可以拍一些北京的照片,再加上一些最近拍的剑桥的照片。
add v. 添加
add ... to 把……加到……上
① The drink will be too sweet if you add more sugar.
如果你再加糖,这杯饮料就太甜了。
② She added sugar to her tea.
她在茶里加了糖。
① The book was published recently.
这本书刚出版。
② I have seen him quite recently.
我最近见过他。
recently:最近、近来。
1. 表示不久前的一个时间位置时,与一般过去时连用。
2. 表示从过去不久延续到现在的一段时间,与现在完成时连用。
7. I’m sure you’re in with a chance!
我肯定你有获胜的机会!
be in with a chance是非正式英式英语,表示“有可能;有机会”。
① I think I’m in with a chance of getting the job.
我认为我有可能获得这份工作。
② I think we’re in with a good chance of beating them.
我认为我们很有可能打败他们。
8. What about that photo of my cousin
flying kites with Chinese kids …
我堂弟在颐和园和中国小孩放风筝的那张
照片怎么样?
V-ing短语(flying kites …)作后置定语修饰前面的名词(my cousin),V-ing作定语表示主动、进行。
① They lived in a room facing the street.
他们以前住在一个临街的房间里。
② The girl sitting next to me was my cousin.
坐在我旁边的女孩是我表妹。
① The man reading a novel is my father.
= The man who is reading a novel is my
father.
② His brother, working as a teacher, lives
in Beijing.
= His brother, who is working as a teacher,
lives in Beijing.

V-ing作定语,意义上相当于一个定语从句,表示正在进行的动作或主动的动作。

1. Tonight I’m more than happy to read out the winners of the photo competition.
今晚,能来宣布本次摄影大赛的获奖名单我非常高兴。
Jim was so hungry that he ate more than quickly.
吉姆饿的不行了,他吃得非常快。
“more than+形容词/副词”表示“非常……、极其……”(口)。
“more than +名词”可译为“不只是、不仅仅是”。
“more than+数词” 表示“多于……、超过……”。
We must consider more than the health of the
left-behind children.
我们不该仅仅关注留守儿童的健康问题。
There are more than thirty women teachers in this
school.

Language points
① Tom, your poem is very good. Please read it out loud.
汤姆,你的诗很好。请大声朗读出来。
② The teacher read out the result of our chemistry examination yesterday morning.
昨天上午老师宣读了我们的化学测试结果。
read out:朗读、宣读,是“动词 + 副词”构成的短语,其宾语是代词时,代词要放在read与out之间。
2. We were very pleased with our competition this year.
我们对今年的摄影比赛十分满意。
be pleased with: 对……感到高兴、满意,固定搭配 。
① I’m really pleased with your work this term.
我对你这学期的表现感到很满意。
② I’m sure you’ll be pleased with this product.
我敢保证你会喜欢这种产品的。
3. Compared with other years, we received many more photos.
和往年相比,我们收到了更多的照片。
compared with=compared to
和……相比,在句中作状语 。
① Compared with/to silk, cotton is cheap.
和丝绸相比,棉花更便宜。
② This road is quite busy compared to/with ours.
与我们那条路相比,这条路很繁忙。
4. Even though all of the photos are excellent, we are sorry to say that we cannot give prizes to everyone.
尽管所有的照片都很出色,但是我们只能遗憾地告诉大家,我们不能给每个人都颁奖。
even though=even if 表示“即使;尽管”,用来引导状语从句。
① Even though/if it is hard work, I enjoy it.
尽管这是一项艰苦的工作,我却乐在其中。
② Even though/if he’s 24 now, he’s still like
a child.
虽然他现在已经24岁了,但还像个孩子。
5. It is a beautiful girl who is wearing a blouse and skirt, and who is protecting her books against the showers.
