三、阅读理解 (共两节, 满分40分)
第一节 (共15小题; 每小题2分, 满分30分)
A
On my first job as sports editor for the Montpelier (Ohio) Leader Enterprise, I didn’t get a lot of fan mail, so I was surprised to see a letter on my desk one morning. When I opened it, I read: “Sweet piece of writing on the Tigers. Keep up the good work.”
It was signed by Don Wolfe, the sports editor. Because I was a teenager (being paid the grand total of 15 cents a column inch), his words could not have been more encouraging. I kept the letter in my desk drawer for a long time. Whenever I doubted I had the talent to be a writer, I would reread Don’s note and be confident again.
Later, when I got to know him, I learned that Don had a habit of making a quick, encouraging note to people in all walks of life. “When I make others feel good about themselves,” he told me, “I feel good, too.”
Why are encouraging note writers in such short supply My guess is that many who shy away from the practice are too self-conscious. They are afraid they will be misunderstood. Also, writing takes time and it is far easier to pick up the phone. The disadvantage with phone calls, of course, is that they do not last. It is a matter of record, and our words in a note can be read more than once.
So, who around you deserves a note of thanks or approval A neighbor, your librarian, a relative, your mate, a teacher, or a doctor Words such as “greatest”, “smartest”, “prettiest” make us all feel good. Even if your praise runs a little ahead of reality, remember that hopes are often the parents of dreams realized.
36. What might be the writer’s purpose in writing the text
A. To express thanks to the sports editor.
B. To tell us the power of encouraging notes.
C. To explain the art of encouraging note writing.
D. To ask readers to give encouragement to friends.
37. Why did the sports editor leave the writer a note
A. To comfort him. B. To give him a new task.
C. To make himself feel good. D. To encourage him to work better.
38. The writer doesn’t suggest making a phone call because .
A. it doesn’t last B. it is quite direct
C. it is easier to be misunderstood
D. it can be recorded

Are you too old for fairy tales If you think so, Copenhagen is sure to change your mind.
See the city first from the water. In the harbor sits Denmark’s best-known landmark: the Little Mermaid. Remember her She left the world of the Sea People in search of a human soul in one of Hans Christian Andersen’s beloved stories. From the harbor you can get a feel for the attractive “city of green spires (塔尖)”. At twilight or in cloudy weather, spires of old castles and churches lend the city a dream-like atmosphere. You’ll think you’ve stepped into a watercolor painting.
Walking from the harbor along the riverbanks, you’ll see the modest Amalienborg Palace pleted in the mid-18th century, it still houses the royal family. The Danish Royal Guard is on duty. At noon, you’ll watch the changing of the guard. The guards are not just for show, however. Danes will always remember their heroism on April 9, 1940. When the Nazis invaded (入侵) Denmark, the guards aimed their guns and fired. Soldiers fell on both sides. The guards would all have been killed if the king hadn’t ordered them to give in.
Keep going to the Christiansborg Palace. The town of Copenhagen began here. Stop and visit the medieval castle. Parliament and the Royal Reception Chambers are open, too. Then continue to Nyhavn, a narrow waterway dug by soldiers in 1673. You’ll understand why Hans Christian Andersen made this charming waterway his home. A specially-built mirror outside his apartment window allowed him to peek (窥视) unseen at the world outside.
Nyhavn is peaceful, an ideal place for walking and people-watching. You’ll usually see them dressed casually, though they are among Europe’s rich people. Danes are taught not to stand out in a crowd. But they do know how to party, especially during holidays.
43. What gives you dream-like feeling in Copenhagen
A. The Little Mermaid. B. Hans Christian Andersen’s stories.
C. The spires at twilight. D. The watercolor paintings.
44. What can we infer from the third paragraph
A. The Danish royal family are not respected now.
B. Danes used to be embarrassed at the Royal Guard.
C. The changing of the guard is not open to the public.
D. Danes are proud of the Danish Royal Guard.
45. Why did Hans Christian Andersen make the waterway his home
A. It gave him the feeling for writing.
B. It was the town of Copenhagen.
C. It gave him a good view of the outside world.
D. He could write in a calm atmosphere there.
46. According to the last paragraph, Danes .
A. live a dull life B. will have fun on special occasions
C. are still not rich enough D. tend to be special in a crowd
D
When Stanley Culpepper was a kid, he spent hours pulling weeds on his family’s farm. “We pulled and pulled and pulled,” he says. Culpepper started weeding when he was only about 5 or 6 years old. As a teenager, he cut big weeds down with a hatchet (短柄小斧).
Culpepper loved working on the farm, but he didn’t like weeding. He became a scientist to look for easier ways for farmers to control weeds. “I decided there’s got to be a better way than pulling weeds all your life,” says Culpepper, now a weed scientist at the University of Georgia in Tifton.
A lot has changed since Culpepper was a kid. About 15 years ago, many more farmers started using a chemical called glyphosate (草甘膦) to kill weeds. It worked so well that many farmers thought their problems were solved. But recently, some weeds have become resistant to glyphosate. Such weeds are a big problem. Some can grow 10 feet tall. Scientists have discovered that weeds use all kinds of ways to fight the chemical.
And weeds aren’t farmers’ only problem. Insects, such as certain beetles, can eat and weaken crops. By changing the DNA of corn, scientists have made some corn crops produce toxins (毒素) that kill specific insects. But just like weeds, some of these insects have managed to survive the toxins.
If farmers can’t control weeds and insects, they can’t grow as much food. And if they grow less food, food prices could go up. “We’re spoiled in this country because food is cheap and easy to get,” says Patrick Tranel, a weed scientist at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. But producing all that food is a big challenge. Farmers and scientists will need to work hard to keep weeds and insects under control.
47. How did Stanley Culpepper feel about weeding as a kid
A. Interesting. B. Annoying. C. Relaxing. D. Convenient.
48. The writer used the underlined word “resistant” in Paragraph 3 to show that .
A. it’s harder for the chemical to kill the unwanted plants
B. the chemical kills unwanted plants very well
C. some new weeds have appeared in the past years
D. tall weeds cannot be killed by the chemical
49. According to the passage, how did scientists try to fight insects
A. By putting toxins all over plants.
B. By using a chemical called glyphosate.
C. By changing the DNA of specific insects.
D. By allowing plants to kill insects themselves.
50. In the last paragraph, the writer mainly wants to show that .
A. less food will be produced in the future
B. weeds and insects will be a big problem
C. it is important to control weeds and insects
D. food will no longer be cheap and easy to get

On the day of the contest, many people came. Some of them had fine chariots (敞篷双轮马车). Some had fine clothing, fine hairstyles or great food. Some young men came in their track clothes and ran along the highway. 52 However, one man, when he arrived at the end, complained to the king that there was a large pile of rocks left on the road. They got in his way and blocked his travel.
At the end of the day, a lone traveler crossed the finish line and walked over to the king. 53 He spoke to the king with great respect and handed him a bag of gold.
He explained, “I stopped along the way to clear a pile of rocks that was blocking the road. 54 I want you to return it to its owner.”
The king replied, “You are the rightful owner!”
The traveler replied, “Oh, no, this is not mine. I’ve never had so much money.”
“Oh, yes,” said the king. “It is I that had the bag of gold buried under the rocks. 55 He who travels the road best is the one who makes the road smoother for those who will follow.”

I’m sorry to learn that you are upset about being overweight recently. I think you should stop taking weight-loss pills in no time because they are harmful to your health. Besides, you need to eat a healthy diet to recover your strength. There are many other ways to lose weight. For example, jogging is quite a popular form of exercise. You may do it in the morning or after supper. Another way is that you can go to the gym regularly, which is also an effective way of losing weight and keeping healthy. In a word, if you insist on exercising, you are sure to have an attractive figure and stay slim and healthy.
