阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
The common use of Google Maps,a navigation(导航)app on smartphones, raises the age-old question we meet with any technology:What skills are we losing? But also, importantly:What abilities are we getting?
People who are good at finding their way around or good at using paper maps are usually confused about digital(数字的)maps. For example, they may mess up the direction of north and south. But consider what digital navigation apps have meant for someone like me.Although I travel often,I'm so terrible at finding my way that I still use Google Maps almost every day where I have lived for many years. What seems unnecessary to some has been an important part of my own abilities.
Part of the problem is that reading paper maps requires a special skill set. There is nothing natural about them.In many developed nations, street names and house numbers are meaningful, and instructions such as "go north for three blocks and then west" are usually understandable. In Istanbul, however, where I grew up,none of those hold true. For one thing, the locals hardly use street names, and house numbers often aren't sequential. After buildings 1,2 and 3 were built, someone might put in another house between 1 and 2,and that's 4.Therefore,instructions as simple as "go north" would require a helicopter.I got lost all the time.
But since I used Google Maps,I travel with a lot more confidence. As a result,my world has opened up and my native navigation skills have improved, too.
That brings me back to my question:while we often lose some skills after seeking convenience from technology, this new setup may also allow us to gain more abilities and do something more confidently.Maybe when technology closes a door,we should also look for the doors it opens.
1.What do we know about Google Maps from the first two paragraphs?
A. It confuses users like the writer.
B. It helps people read maps better.

D. It is popular but brings doubts as well.
2.Which of the following can best replace the underlined word " sequential" in Paragraph 3?
A. In a usual order. B. Easily noticed. C. Of the same kind. D. Clearly written.
3.What's the writer's main purpose of writing the passage?
A. To introduce the use of Google Maps.
B. To share his opinions on Google Maps.

A week ago at Compton Elementary School, Georgia, something wonderful happened. Band students from Hillgrove High School arrived to hang out with and talk to the little guys. They wanted to make sure the school's youngest had food in their homes that week.
The thing that thrilled people was that this generous idea came from 17-year-old Nathan Jones, not an adult. Jones is a good trumpet(小号) player with the Hillgrove Hawks band. The idea, he said, came to him two years ago during a discussion about community service in a freshman leadership class. Serving the community was nothing new to Jones. For years, he and his family, who recently moved from Orlando, Florida, had been active community volunteers.
Last year, Jones thought it was a good idea to get the school band involved in community service, only for the young kids in the school. Band director Patrick Erwin agreed but decided they had neither the time nor the resources to do it. "It got put on the back burner," Jones said. "This year, I decided to try again." This time, Erwin encouraged Jones to take charge and he did.
Back in August, Jones challenged the band to raise $5,000 to help with the cost of packing the meals. Within two weeks, they'd collected $6,000 in donations, enough to provide 2,500 family meals, including bags of rice, soy protein, vitamins and vegetables. By the end of the month, when poor families are struggling, a bag of food can mean the difference between a full stomach and an empty one for many of those students.
But Hillgrove's effort isn't just about feeding the body. It's about feeding souls, too.
Early on, the band's goal was to direct students' focus from getting "likes" on social media to building relationships with the people around them. So the band decided on the message, "What the world needs now is love, not likes" for its half-time show. "That means actually going into the community and actually showing love," Jones said. "We're going out and doing what we've been telling people to do."
1.Why did the band students go to Compton Elementary School
A.To share their music with the kids.
B.To provide food for poor young kids.
C.To give students advice on healthy eating.
D.To help children who had trouble making friends.
2.Where did Jones get his idea
A.From a news report about Compton. B.From a discussion in a leadership class.
C.From his volunteer experiences in Orlando. D.From his parents who loved community service.
3.What does the underlined part "put on the back burner" in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Put aside. B.Started. C.Changed over. D.Occupied.
4.What can we learn about the Hillgrove Hawks band
A.They couldn't raise enough money. B.They were going to help more schools.
C.Their work meant a lot to the young kids. D.They had been helping Compton for two years.

With courses on David Beckham and Harry Potter on offer at famous universities, it comes as no surprise that students are now able to learn the art of the perfect selfie(自拍).
The concept of taking selfies gained great popularity. It soon exploded on the Internet, and people started crazily to take images that had them as the primary item of focus. The trend became so popular that it even inspired a song, "SELHE" by the Chainsmokers, which racked up 267 million views on YouTube. In fact, Twitter declared 2014 as "the year of the selfie".
Just like the art of photography can be studied and improved, City Literary Institute, a well-known college in London, felt it needed to educate people on the fine art of taking the perfect selfie and officially started to offer a first-ever course on that.
The four-session course will cost 132 ( 106 for seniors), but the fee won’t even include a free selfie-stick, a tool that is rapidly gaining acceptance for serious selfie-takers. It is open to all enthusiastic and self-obsessed photographers.
As part of the new course, self-absorbed photographers will be taught "valuable life skills" to prepare themselves to face a world which could present a photo opportunity at any point. Apart from offering the much-needed but seldom-sought guidance on the best angles and lighting, the course promises to improve your critical understanding of the "elfie" There will also be a brief exploration into the concepts of "dentity, self-hood and memory"as well as the opportunity to “develop new ideas to you’re your photography more relevant to your aims,

Nothing succeeds like success,as every parent of a straight-A student knows, but trying to strengthen academic excellence by telling your child, " You’re so smart!" may be counterproductive.
According to the findings of a 2017 study, children who think their intelligence is fixed are less likely to pay attention and return to normal from mistakes than children who think their intelligence can grow and change. Telling kids they’re smart strengthens the idea that intelligence is a genetic gift rather than a skill that can be improved.
In the study published online, researchers at Michigan State University looked at 123 children who were about 7, as kids at this age face the challenge of going to school. The team assessed(评估) the children to determine whether they had a "growth mindset", who believe that they can work harder to get smarter, or a "fixed mindset", who believe that their intelligence is unable to change. They then asked the children to complete a fast-paced computer accuracy task while their brain activity was recorded. In the task, children played a game, helping a zookeeper catch escaped animals by pressing the space bar when an animal showed up on their screens.
Based on the data they collected, the researchers concluded that children with a u growth mindsetM were much more likely to have a larger brain response after making a mistake, and in turn were more likely to improve their performance by paying closer attention to the task after making an error.
While previous research has shown that people with a "fixed mindset” don’t want to admit they’ve made a mistake, this study found that children with a"fixed mindsetn were able to "return to normal" after making an error, but only if they gave their full attention to the mistake and used it as an opportunity to learn.
For parents, the lessons are clear: For starters, don’t pay compliments(赞美的话) that suggest intelligence is fixed. If a child hands you an A + test, don’t say, "You’re so smart!” Instead say, "Wow, that studying really paid off!" or "You clearly mastered this material — way to go!" Note the effort, not the intelligence.
1.Which of the following can be closest to the meaning of "counterproductive"
A.Opposite. B.Competitive. C.Successful. D.Unknown.
2.What was discovered in a 2017 study
A.Children are easy to lose focus in class.
B.It takes time for children to regain confidence.
C.Skills are generally thought to be able to be improved.
D.Telling kids they’re smart means emphasizing the born gift.
3.What does the third paragraph mainly tell us
A.The purpose and the process of the study. B.The major breakthrough made in the study.
C.The participants and the place of the study. D.The scientific methods used in the study.
4.Which would be the best title for the passage
A.Always Be Strict with Your Kid B.Never Call Your Kid Smart
C.How to Communicate with Your Kid D.How to Comment on Your Kid's Performance

I was a taxi driver, a father of a 16-year-old boy at that time. My son was good at school, and he would graduate from senior high school and go to university, but he was hesitating to choose his future job and he always changed his mind. I did give him advice but he didn't follow it. And one Monday morning, I stopped at New York Hospital when I found a well-dressed man coming over. He was waving to me. I waited patiently until he jumped into the taxi. "LaGuardia Airport, please." He said.
As always, I wondered about my passenger. So I asked, "What do you do " "I am working at the hospital." For some unknown reason, I decided to ask for his help.
"Could I ask a favor " He didn't answer at first. But I continued, "I have a son, 16. He's doing well in school. He will graduate from senior high school. He wants a job this summer. Is there any possibility that you might get him a summer job " After a minute, he said, "The medical students have a research project. Maybe he could fit in. Have him send me his school records." He searched his pocket and handed me a card.
That evening, when I got home, I pulled the card from my pocket. "Robbie," I said proudly, "This could be a summer job for you. Send him your school records." Robbie took the card and read it out loudly, "Fred Plum, New York Hospital." "Is this a joke " he said in doubt. After I shouted and threatened to cut off his pocket money, Robbie promised to send off his grades the next morning.
Two weeks later, when I arrived home, the whole family waited for me excitedly.

2.词句猜测题。根据后文"because after buildings 1,2 and 3 were built, someone squeezed in another house between 1 and 2,and now that's 4.(因为在1、2和3号楼建成后,有人挤在1和2之间的另一个房子里,现在是4号。)"可知,房屋编号不按顺序。所以sequential为"顺序的"之意。故选A。

第二节
答案:successfully; allows; led; global; planned; agreement; where; to develop; it; for

Two weeks later, when I arrived home, the whole family waited for me excitedly. Extremely proud, my son handed me a letter from Plum, telling him he was accepted by the project. As it turns out, he sent his school records to the hospital the next day after I gave him the card. And he got a phone from Plum's secretary for an interview. He was concerned about the result, as a result of which, he didn't tell the family what had happened.
Robbie got the job and did well at the hospital. In fact, Robbie did so well that Plum phoned me, singing high praise for him. When the summer job ended, he made up his mind to be a doctor. With a clear aim in his mind, Robbie worked even harder. Eventually, he was admitted to New York Medical College. Much to my amazement, a stranger should change my son's future.
