Nowadays, kuakuaqun or praise groups have become more and more popular on the Internet. Their aim is to comfort young people. These groups provide words of support for those who are unhappy.
Spending just a little money, you can enter such a group. Share your problems or success, and you will receive positive messages soon. These messages, mostly from strangers, will help you feel better. A leader of one of the groups talks about his first purpose, “I want to help people learn to praise others and accept others' praise.”
I like the idea of kuakuaqun. However, I think getting praise from strangers online isn't very useful in the long run. This is especially true when you are paying for the praise. These people don't know you, so the praise may not be earnest. Real and meaningful praise comes from the people you know.
With this in mind, we should try to praise our friends and family members when they need some encouragement. Simply saying to a classmate, ‘I like you’, can lift his or her confidence. Being kind to others is easy. And it adds the necessary sweetness to make everyone's life better.
24.Words of support of kuakuaqun are mainly from________.
A.Students B.Strangers C.Relatives D.classmates
25.In kuakuaqun you can learn ________.
A.to fight with others B.to make friends with others
C.to draw some pictures D.to praise others and accept others' praise
26.What's the meaning of the underlined word “earnest”?
A.勇敢的 B.大量的 C.真诚的 D.虚拟的
27.Kuakuaqun is ________ according to the passage.
A.a book B.a magazine
C.a computer D.an online group

My mom dropped me off at the school gates about five minutes before the bell. A little blonde (金发的) girl got dropped off at the same time and started waving (招手) at me. She ran over and told me her name was Abigail. She was very nice and we became close straight away. We spent all morning together and began to talk to another girl called Stacey. The three of us sat together in class all day and we even made our way home together! It went so quickly. Our teacher told us that tomorrow we would really start learning and developing new skills.

One Canada, Two Languages
Canada is one of the few nations in the world to have two official languages: English and French. There are 10 provinces in the country, but only one of these — Quebec is known as “French Canada”. This is because it was founded by French explorers while British adventurers discovered the rest.
Canada left the British Empire (帝国) in 1867 to become an independent country and English and French have been recognized as the official languages ever since.
Most people speak English as their first language and the two national television networks broadcast in English throughout the country. Apart from in Quebec and a few places on the east coast, French television is very rare.
The same goes for traffic signs and menus, for example, outside of Quebec, there are only a few places where you'll see traffic signs in French. In restaurants, it's almost impossible to find French on the menu unless you are in the heartland (中心地带) of French Canada. However, all products sold in Canada must, by law, have labels (标签) and instructions in both languages.
In Canada's English speaking provinces, official bilingualism means that students can choose to complete a special French language course. Under this program, they are taught most of their subjects in French.
If a student begins the course in kindergarten(幼儿园) or Grade One, it is likely that all his lessons will be in French. However, if he starts at junior high school, 25 percent of the teaching will continue to be in English.
32.Which country controlled Canada before its independence
A.France. B.Britain. C.America. D.Germany.
33.Where can you watch French television programs
A.Only in Quebec. B.In Quebec and a few other places.
C.From the two national television networks. D.All over Canada.
34.What does the underlined word “bilingualism” in the fifth paragraph mean
A.外语教育 B.母语教育 C.双语教育 D.语言教育
35.What do we know about the education in Canada
A.In English speaking provinces only English courses are offered.
B.If you choose a special French language course, most of the subjects will be taught in French.
C.The courses in primary schools are all taught in English.
D.Most of the courses in junior high schools are taught in English.

Levin entered a television writing competition when he was at college. He later began to write for TV shows.

The Vienna based researchers showed that dogs will stop doing a simple task when not rewarded if another dog, which continues to be rewarded is present.
The experiment consisted of taking pairs of dogs and getting them to present a paw for a reward. On giving this “handshake” the dogs received a piece of food. One of the dogs was then asked to shake hands, but received no food. The other dog continued to get the food when it was asked to perform the task.
The dog without the reward quickly stopped doing the task, and showed signs of anger or stress when its partner was rewarded.
To make sure that the experiment was really showing the interaction between the dogs rather than just the frustration of not being rewarded, a similar experiment was conducted where the dogs performed the task without the partner. Here they continued to present the paw for much longer.
Dr. Frederike Range from the University of Vienna says this shows that it was the presence of the rewarded partner that was the greater influence on their behavior.
“The only difference is that one gets food and the other doesn't. They are responding to being unequally rewarded.” she says.
The researchers say this kind of behavior, where one animal gets frustrated with what is happening with another, has only been observed in primates (灵长类) before.
Studies with various types of monkeys and chimpanzees show they react not only to seeing their partners receiving rewards when they are not, but also to the type of reward.
The dog study also looked at whether the type of reward made a difference. Dogs were given either bread or sausage, but seemed to react equally to either. Dr. Range says this may be because they have been trained.

A Journey to the Yosemite Firefall
Each year, thousands of people are attracted to the Yosemite National Park in California for a chance of seeing — and photographing — the unique “firefall”. The amazing “firefall” comes to life only when there is enough water from the melting (融化) snow to keep the Horsetail Fall flowing and when the light of the setting sun hits the waterfall at the right angle. It can only be seen for a short time in February on clear sunny days.
This year, the weather isn't stopping the “firefall” from happening, but it is making the journey to see it more difficult.
“What would have been a 10 minute walk turned into a two hour hike through deep snow ” photographer Ryan Fitzsimons said about his recent trip to see the phenomenon. “Our clothes were all wet by the time we got to a viewing site. But the heavy snow made the sight much more beautiful since the waterfall is much bigger this year.”
Another photographer Andy Heitz was making his first trip to see the “firefall”. He had to wait five hours in the extreme cold for his turn to take a picture.
“I got to the site at about 12: 00 at noon. The place was already filled with hundreds of people waiting to see and photograph the ‘firefall’. I was so lucky that I shot a really wonderful burner!I was completely amazed with what I saw, ” he said. “You know, only on a couple days of the year in February and when the sun sets down at the perfect angle to shine on Yosemite's Horsetail Fall can we see the ‘Fire Fall’. I'll never forget what I have seen.”

8.What is the main purpose of this text

Glacier National Park in Montana shares boundaries with Canada, an American Indian reservation, and a national forest. Along the North Fork of the Flathead River, the park also covers about 17, 000 acres of private lands that are currently used for ranching (牧场) and agriculture. This land is an important part of the habitat and migratory area in which several endangered species live. These private lands are essentially the only ones available for development in the region.
With encouragement from the park, local landowners initiated a land use planning effort to guide the future of the North Fork. The park is a partner in an inter local agreement that calls for resource managing agencies to work together and with the more than 400 private owners in the area. A draft plan has been prepared, with objective of maintaining traditional economic uses but limiting new development that would damage park resources. Voluntary action by landowners, in cooperation with the park and the county, is helping to restrict small productions, maintain wildlife habitats, and minimize any harmful impact on the environment.
The willingness of local landowners to participate in this protection effort may have been stimulated by concerns that Congress would impose a legislative solution. Nevertheless, many local residents want to save the existing character of the area. Meetings between park officials and landowners have led to a dramatically improved understanding of all concerns.

There was an earthquake this morning. I was working in front of my computer when it hit the city. The quake started with a sudden loud noise. I thought that something heavy in a neighbor's house probably had fallen. However, the walls and the floor began to shake. I finally realized it was an earthquake.
My son Zac, a sixteen year old boy, was sleeping with his door locked. Being sixteen, he can sleep through any kind of noise. “Zac!” I shouted. “Are you OK?” But nobody replied. I was a little worried. I couldn't imagine that someone was able to get such a deep sleep. The house was dancing. There were waves in the swimming pool. My son finally emerged in his underpants. We looked around the room. I knew that we should hide under a table to stop things from falling on us and stay away from glass. Unfortunately, none of our furniture was designed for hiding under. “Should we go into the garden?” Zac asked. “No, trees could fall on us!” I said. Actually, Zac had done earthquake drills (训练) at school. He must have been told to hide under a desk and cover his head. But we had nothing to cover our heads in the house.
Luckily, before we took any action, the windows stopped moving and the pool calmed down. Everything went back to normal soon. But both my son and I knew what we should do, because we knew if there had been a really big earthquake this morning, we couldn't have escaped from it.
